Highlights
Learn the history of Pioneer Square from a unique, below-ground perspective
Walk the neighborhood's subterranean tunnels with a knowledgeable guide
Trace Seattle’s history from an Indigenous encampment to the 1890s to today
Seattle history tour covers the basics while leaving time for other sightseeing
What to expect
Meet your guide and group at 102 Cherry Street, near Pioneer Square, at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled departure. Be sure to wear good walking shoes as this underground walking tour covers uneven terrain and involves ascending and descending about six flights of stairs. After a brief introduction from your guide, set off to explore one of Seattle's oldest neighborhoods and its subterranean tunnels on this guided tour. Listen to stories of Seattle's past, from the Klondike Gold Rush to Skid Row, as you wander dark passageways and then back up to street level. Over the course of three blocks, you'll cover a century of history, from the neighborhood's origins as a Coast Salish settlement to its modern iteration. It’s a perspective you can’t get by wandering on your own. The tour concludes at Occidental Park.

Most important tour you should take!
Jim Gall was our guide for the Beneath the Streets tour and it was one of the best tours I have ever taken. We took two others while we were in Seattle and they didn’t come close to this one. It was not that much walking, first of all. He took us through the Pioneer Square area, giving us a history lesson of the buildings around us as well as what was beneath the streets. He gave the tour with humor and joy, in a real sense where you could tell he enjoyed his job and it spilled over onto those of us paying attention. Some of the little factoids and random comments about the tour were some of the most interesting things. I haven’t been on a tour where I’ve laughed so much or learned so thoroughly. I can not say enough nice things about this tour. We went with four kids and they had no difficulty following along on the tour or engaging with the material. I highly recommend this be the most important tour you take while in Seattle

Great Info for anyone wanting to learn more about Seattle!
We had an awesome time on this tour. I love a good history lesson on any city we visit and this was packed with great information. Jennifer was our guide and she was fantastic!! Sometimes I have difficulty hearing guides in busy places, but her voice was clear and strong. Loved this tour and we learned so much. Saw great examples of the underground spaces along with a lot of black and white photos of early life in Seattle.

Girl week intro - 5 stars!
Jun 2021 • Family
Our girl week started with this tour (mom, niece, 2 daughters) Mom was mesmerized with the history and storytelling by Dave. Teen was intrigued due to the architecture and design angle, tween interested due visually stimulation, but not overwhelming. Nine year old was “bored”….she’s nine! Sheesh! Photos (included) helped fill in some blanks for our week and Dave gave great recommendations for a personal touch.

Great experience!
My boyfriend absolutely loved this tour. Said was his favorite of our stay in Seattle. I enjoyed as well but not as much, but only cuz not huge history person. I believe our hosts name was Jeff or jack, I apologize we can’t remember, but he was an absolute enjoyment and made that tour very fun and interactive!

Excellent! So glad you enjoyed your tour with Terrilynn. It is great, but not surprising, to hear that her Rock Star status is still intact even though we were closed for 10 months. Thanks for taking our tour and for your post!

Horrible tour guide, Dietrich
Jun 2021 • Friends
Our tour guide, Dietrich, was incredibly insensitive when talking about Seattle's history. He managed to make fun of people with severe mental illness, homeless people, and was really crass about the treatment that poor people and indignenous people experienced during this time in history.

Alvesta, Ack! This is NOT the experience or presentation style that we want folks to experience. Nor is it the response we normally receive from folks who have taken a tour with this guide. If you will let us know how you booked your tickets with us, and under what name, we will issue a full refund. (You can send that info to Admin@Beneath-The-Streets.com) What might have been an attempt to put folks at ease in response to behavior exhibited by someone living on the street may not have come off as intended. The term 'Skid Row' was originally coined to describe Pioneer Square and as uncomfortable as our early history was towards those 'on the Skids', it deserves to be told. The same is also true regarding the banishment and abuse of the Duwamish people who were here when Seattle was founded. We try not to shy away from these aspects of our history but we do not want to present them in a way that continues to sideline or abuse those who have historically occupied this neighborhood. I am sorry this was your experience on our tour.
