The waters surrounding San Juan Island have a large salmon population (the primary food source of orcas), making it an ideal location for whale watching. With this tour, set out on a boat equipped with a heated cabin and large viewing windows to look for killer whales in their natural habitat. San Juan Island is rich in wildlife, and minke, humpback, gray whales can also often be seen in the area.

What to Expect

Meet at Friday Harbor at your selected time and board the boat for your whale-watching cruise. Climb aboard and choose a seat in the heated cabin with large viewing windows or head outside for a spot on the walk-around deck.

As you cruise, be on the lookout for whales and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Stop in prime locations and observe the species up close. Your
seasoned captain is on hand to teach you about the ecology and geology of the waters in the region.

While it’s not guaranteed that killer whales will be seen on this tour, they are spotted more than 90% of the time. Minke, humpback, and gray whales are also often spotted in this area.

San Juan Safaris: A Trip to Remember!

Not only did we see orcas, but we saw a pair of humpback whales as well. Our captain and naturalist were both knowledgeable and expertly guided our experience. As a family, we will always remember the day we went whale watching from Friday Harbor.

Have a look at the website for sanjuansafaris and it has a picture of Sea Lion the boat we were on. It had seating inside and out so people tended to move around. I'd say it is around 40' long.

The trip I went on was in a large Zodiac boat, and it was extremely stable. Other boats I've seen doing whale watching are even larger, so I wouldn't be concerned about going overboard. BTW: the waters aren't "infested... More
