Overview
Only with a National Park Service Ranger does a cruise through Alaska’s famously beautiful fjords become an educational excursion. Commentary from your park ranger guide makes the most of this 100-mile (160-kilometer) cruise through the stunning landscapes of Kenai Fjords National Park, including stops at Holgate Glacier and the Chiswell Islands, home to large populations of wildlife. Upgrade to include an Alaska salmon and prime rib buffet lunch.
Highlights
  • Educational boat tour through Kenai Fjords National Park
  • See at Holgate Glacier and the Chiswell Islands
  • Opportunities to spot wildlife such as puffins, sea lions, and otters
  • Ride in the comfort of a heated cabin with a reserved seat
What to Expect
Make your way to the meeting location, and board a comfortable catamaran equipped with a heated cabin and warm beverages. Set off through Resurrection Bay in Kenai Fjords National Park en route to Holgate or Aialik Glacier, and stop and watch for calving, which is when large chunks of ice break off and crash into the water. Continue past the Chiswell Islands to your second stop at Cape Resurrection (weather dependent), famous for its large population of nesting seabirds such as puffins and cormorants. Other wildlife sightings could include sea lions, sea otters, bald eagles, and mountain goats. Throughout the cruise, take in views of the pristine Alaskan wilderness while learning about the sights from your park ranger guide.

This was a great trip. The captain took us a little out of the way so we could see orcas! It was really nice. The glaciers and wildlife were stunning. We did not have the buffet lunch, so I don't know how it was. We did have a drink made with glacier ice. It was a great

Let me start by saying, our family has taken this tour multiple times over the years, mostly during peak season, July/August. This year, we talked up the tour to family members who hadn’t ever gone out, and we were there on September 18th. Not good timing for seeing much. We

Response from Lindsay M, Public Relations Manager at Kenai Fjords National Park Glacier and Wildlife Cruise
Responded 02 Oct 2019
Dear MountainGirl, Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are sorry to hear that the wildlife was not overly abundant on the day of your tour. As you stated, animals can be quite unpredictable, and later in the season they may become more sparse and harder to locate with less vessels on the water helping in the search. Our 7.5 hour National Park Cruise visits two tidewater glaciers, spending about 20 to 30 minutes at the face of each to maximize chances of viewing some activity. It is too bad that you found this to be too much time, but for first time visitors to Alaska and others, it is our goal to show them the magnificence of these glaciers, and that means allowing them ample time to view these unique wonders of nature. We have shorter cruises available that spend less, or no, time at glaciers, if wildlife-viewing is your priority. The longer tours cater to those looking to maximize time spent at glaciers as well as increase chances of spotting wildlife. The whales this autumn have been rather active, but unfortunately not every single day. Major Marine will never hesitate to inform guests about what has been seen day to day. It truly is unfortunate that they were not present on the day of your cruise. We apologize that you found your cruise disappointing and hope you were able to make some memories with your family. We look forward to cruising with you again in the future.

Worth every penny, even without the buffet. You can bring your own food too. We saw sea otters, transient orcas, Stellar sea lions, harbor seals, and all this even at the end of the season, in addition to all the amazing views! Well worth the expense.
