Our tour guide, Gimmy was amazing. She really knows Chinatown so well and you can tell how near and dear it is to her. I loved learning about all the details of the city from the murals, to the cultural significance SF Chinatown has to offer. We ended the tour with a little lunch and it was absolutely perfect. The food choices were great!

Thanks for the all the great history lesson on SF Chinatown, Gimmy! My cousins and I absolutely loved it.

Thank you, outsidetheedge, for joining us in Chinatown and for your kind words about your time with Gimmy. Indeed, she has a wealth of knowledge to share and cares so much about the history, culture and people of the neighborhood. I have shared your comments with Gimmy, our restaurant partner and team. It was a nice little tour. I wish there was a little more food tasting--we only tasted a fortune cookie at the factory, one sample of tea and the lunch. It was a small group and our experience was good. Our tour guide was somewhat knowledgeable although could have known a little more, she was sweet although somewhat hard of hearing. Overall we were pretty satisfied.

Thank you, nagerpa, for joining us on tour. I’d just like to clarify you booked our Classic Chinatown historical tour and not our food tour. This tour covers history, culture and a dim sum luncheon. It does include a visit to the fortune cookie factory and a tea shop, but is an overview of the area. Come see us for our food tour one day - we’d be happy to have you. Tina @ Wok Wiz

This was exactly as advertised. The tour guide, Gimmy was professional and had lots of energy. She took us to some interesting stores and a fortune cookie factory. We learned just enough, but not too much history of the people and their culture. Gimmy was enthusiastic and proud of the people of Chinatown. We topped it off with a lovely and delicious lunch consisting of several different entrees.

Thank you for deleting my previous review. Dorothy is NOT a treasure; at least, not to me. She treated me like a janitor, and made me clean up after everyone after we were finished eating a dim sum lunch. Funny how she asked me, and not anyone else, who all happened to be white, by the way. (This review is for a tour I took that was pre-covid)

The daily tour of Chinatown that Wok Wiz offers, covers more history of the area and Chinese-Americans in the area, than food. There are several tour guides who may lead your trip, and each guide adds their own personal touch to the tour - but they all cover some of the basic history of the area. Although the area of Chinatown that was covered is on steep hills, it wasn't a bad walk - the tour zig zags along, so that you don't have to tackle more than one block of steep hill at a time, and those hills often have a stop along the way. I think the best part of the tour was visiting the small alley ways between the big streets. These alleys have the smaller shops that area residents use every day, and it gives you a better idea of the life in the neighborhood. Without this tour, I would have never seen these smaller side streets. Having lunch at the end of the tour is optional, but I felt it was one of the more valuable points of the tour because it gave us time to viist with the other people taking the tour - and out tour guide - in an informal and casual setting. I was somewhat sad at the end of lunch because I enjoyed the company at our table so much. If you are wanting to try more of the food in china town - take a pen and something to write down names and addresses of restaurants you pass by. Many of them have their menus listed out on the windows - some with pictures. So scribble down an address and a name of where you want to come back to - so you can come back on another day at your leisure and find those places again.

Frank Jang was our tour guide and lunch companion as we spent about 3 hours with him walking around Chinatown and eating one of the best Cantonese lunches I've ever had. Frank took us to a tea tasting (where we bought tea to bring home), a fortune cookie factory (you'll never eat a fortune cookie wrapped in cellophane again), and scumptious lunch, and we learned alot about the history of Chinatown. Frank grew up in Chinatown and pointed out a lot of sites and stories that we would have missed if we didn't take this tour.

My husband and I were lucky enough to have a private tour with Dorothy, who was born and raised in Chinatown. She was so passionate about Chinatown and it was so captivating listening to her speak about the history and people of the neighborhood. We visited several different places, and the highlight was the Tea Room. I am a fan of British tea services, but had never known much about Asian tea culture and was delighted to learn. You also visit a market, herbalist, and temple. There's no stops for souvenir-shopping, so if that's something you want to do, make sure to leave time afterwards (we didn't and were disappointed). The lunch at the end with Dorothy was so perfect. It was great talking to her and learning about her life and the different struggles her ancestors faced. The actual lunch was at Four Seas restaurant. I've read other reviews that it's not good, but we thought it was great. I think we were given about seven or eight different dim sum tastings and a dessert. All in all, a definite must-do if you're interested in different cultures and history.

Imagine finding out that Chinatown's main street, Grant Avenue was San Francisco's first street, that Chinatown was completely destroyed in the fires after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and that Old St. Mary's Cathedral (built in 1854) was the only building in Chinatown to survive those fires. We learned where Dr. Sun Yat-Sen secretly visited Chinatown and where to find Buddhist offerings for parted friends or family.

This and much more one learns on a walking tour in Chinatown. Our Wok Wiz tour guide was local, Dorothy Quork, a whirling dervish of energy, who took us up and down and around Chinatown pointing out architecture, statutes, history, old Chinatown and new, the best shops for whatever our desire and then ending with a delicious dim sum lunch at the Oriental Pearl Restaurant. Dorothy was quick to answer all of our questions and adding more information then we ever guessed was within the boundaries of Chinatown. And all the while Dorothy would be greeting friends on the avenue or shop owners. The tour made us feel part of the neighborliness of Chinatown. She is a gem having done these tours for 20 years! Thank you Dorothy. One can't go wrong with her.

I'd recommend doing a tour then spending time walking through the streets, shopping, people watching and enjoying this lovely & friendly part of San Francisco.

For the most part, this tour did not live up to expectations. We started 30 minutes late b/c group members were late. There might be better ways to deal with this problem than to shorten the tour for those who are on time. We didn't see much; a few shops where we could spend money, a temple, and a little street art. We heard some history, but not much. And we were done touring less than 90 minutes after we started, finishing at the tea shop, where we did get our only "free" sample. We didn't go to lunch, but we did get to see the pictures of what dim sum was to be consumed when we stopped and pictures were pointed out (at a different restaurant).
Do a little research on your own, and take a walk; you'll know as much or more at the end.

Thank you, Magistr, for your feedback. We apologize for the delay in start. While the vast majority of our tours begin on time, we will take this as an opportunity to review our practices to encourage "late birds" to join us enroute.
