    What to Expect
An admission ticket to the Flamingo Gardens Botanical Garden and Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary is a ticket to a rare tropical paradise — 60 acres (24 hectares) to be exact. It is a not-for-profit wildlife sanctuary, aviary and botanical garden located just west of Fort Lauderdale.

The gardens were originally the property of Floyd and Jane Wray, who built a home and citrus grove here in 1933. At the time, it was at the edge of the Everglades, where they started a collection of tropical and subtropical fruit trees and shrubs. The Wray home still stands today. In fact, it’s now a museum illustrating a country home in the early 1930s.

The attractions inside Flamingo Gardens are plentiful. The Wray Botanical Collection has over 3,000 tropical and subtropical plants and trees. It is also home to some of the largest trees of their kind, according to the Florida Forest Service.

The wildlife sanctuary boasts the largest collection of native-Florida wildlife in the entire state. Check out alligators, bobcats, otters, eagles, bears, panthers, peacocks and, of course, the famous flamingos. Plus, more than 250 birds fly free in the magnificent aviary.

Catch a Wildlife Encounter Show, plus a narrated 25-minute tram tour that runs every 30 minutes throughout the day.

Hungry? Purchase sandwiches, salads, smoothies and other snacks and beverages at one of the on-site eateries — the Flamingo Cafe offers some incredible views of the gardens to boot. At the gift shop, pick up unique tropical plants and accessories for your patio.

We recently visited the Flamingo Gardens on a family trip to Fort Lauderdale. Escaping the rain, we decided to visit this place. The admission is a little steep, but the activities in the gardens are quite nice. The place is out-dated, but a lot of...More

The visit was nice and peaceful, as there was not too many visitors there at the same time. We were a bit disapointed that there wasn't that many animals to see, except for birds. I guess it was normal because of the heat, but we...More

I loved being so close to the animals and birds here. The Peacocks were amazing. They preened and let me take lots of close up pictures. The shuttle train conductor filled us with info on all the species and flora we were seeing. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Dear Ann, The tram tour takes you to the 50 acres of the gardens that are not in the main part of the park. The animal exhibits and the arboretum are only seen on foot, but we have plenty of benches to sit and rest. We... More
