About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Debasis K0 contributionsAwesome and ProfessLifetime Experience with ASEC starting from helping us out with an afternoon trip on the very next day. Crew were friendly, professional, eco-friendly, and helpful. They also use Scuba which was great as it allows you to stay under water for as long as possible. Got to see 3 Sharks (not Big Whites though - but we didn't expected that) and what an experience. Sea was rough, but our experienced crew managed to spot the Sharks for us. This is also a much closer option than Gansbaai or Hermanus if you are staying in Cape Town. Overall a good day out and a great operator! Made the best of our trip to Cape Town! For Non Swimmers: Yes, you can avail this experience if you're not afraid of chilly waters or holding your breath under water for few seconds. Of course, Scuba gears make it so much easy. (I'm mentioning this as I didn't know basic swimming at the time of writing, had no problems under the cage)Written 24 December 2019
- sweetiemay7860 contributionsIf you want unprofessional then this the your companyI had contacted this company inquiring about how much they charge for their shark diving trip and they told me the price and I said ok I’ll let them know, they contacted my tour guide who messaged me specially saying “ I am not trying to be funny but they don’t negotiate “ I said when did I negotiate? It was sooo unprofessional for them to tattle taling something that’s not true and getting my tour guide to tell me ? Like I have NOT heard of this unprofessionalism. I’m attaching my convo! If you want to deal with unprofessionala then be my guest ! I was 50-50 on this tour but now I’m 100 No on this tour!Written 5 December 2019

- Daria H0 contributionsSuper helpfulWe originally booked a shark diving experience with this company but it was sadly canceled due to weather. We were flying out the day after our booking so rescheduling wasn't an option. They could tell we were really wanting the experience so they arranged transport to another shark diving company in Mossel Bay and we had an amazing experience! The crew were awesome and we saw half a dozen great whites in a range of sizes. Even a male, which they said was rare for the area! Thank you for helping me check this off my bucket list!Written 24 July 2019
- Meghan K0 contributionsStellar ExperienceWhat a phenomenal time, I couldn’t recommend this company any more highly. The trip was amazing and everyone leading on board the boat displays just as much enthusiasm as if it was their only day to experience marine life here as well. Although understandably they can’t guarantee what sharks you will see, the entire crew communicated constantly and moved to various spots until everyone had the opportunity to see a shark up close and extended time when whales and dolphins were spotted to allow the group to watch them. Nadine went above and beyond to organize an incredible personal experience based on my schedule, contacting me via every channel possible when the first day I booked had to be rescheduled and organizing a wonderful driver from Cape Town. Freshly baked muffins on boat - an added bonus. Truly good value all around!Written 29 March 2019
- michaelgK9068NJ0 contributionsSaw 2 sharksThey say out front there is no guarantee you will see sharks. The office staff and ships crew were very knowledgeable and professional and all the supplied gear was fine. The boat ride to Seal Island might have been the highlight of the trip as we saw a hundred dolphins or more swimming alongside the boat. My daughter and I were the 1st group in the cage and there were no sharks. After the boat was moved we got back in and managed to see 2 cow sharks of decent size. One put on a quick show of teeth ripping at the fish on the baited line. The other just briefly swam by. There was a lot of chop and the cage was constantly in motion and a lot of effort was needed to stay in good viewing position. One really good feature of this company is they provide you with hose and regulator so you can stay underwater. You don’t have to be scuba certified. The cage is not fully submerged, so there is a breathing space if you need to surface. For ZAR 6250 ($436) for 2 including transport to and from Cape Town I was disappointed at the outcome, however I might do it again at a better season.Written 25 March 2019
- lawshark10 contributionsShark Diving Made SimpleThe staff was efficient and professional. They need to limit the number of divers they take out. 14 people was just too many as the cage fits only 4 persons. The limit should be 8 people so as to allow a fair shark watching for all. This is not a trip for persons who do not want to experience rough waters, smelly seals, frigid waters, fish chunks around them. For shark enthusiasts, it is a safe way to see these beasts up close and personal. We went for two days.Written 19 February 2019
- goneroaming0 contributionsWhat a fantastic experience along with a great crewHave just finished the early morning shark cage diving. It was simply first class. The crew of captain, Wellington, Charl and the young lady whose name I can’t remember (sorry) were amazing. Their knowledge and background took the experience to another level. We were lucky to see at least four cow sharks. Sadly no great whites, but Captain told me May is better around Seal Island. If you’re looking for a non-rushed experience, where you get time in the Atlantic Ocean with sharks, rather then being part of a huge group - I’d wholly recommend these guys. Thank you all!Written 7 February 2019
- Gary S0 contributionsFantastic professional operatorWe had a fantastic shark diving trip with ASEC, a very professional operator with friendly and knowledgeable guides. No great whites but some great time spent under the water with Seven Gill Cow Sharks which were very interested in us. We also spend time with a large group of Common Dolphins on the trip out to Seal Island. The company is one of the few that use air tanks and regulators which means you don’t have to hold your breath under the water, making it a much more pleasurable experience.Written 11 January 2019
- sashahobson0 contributionsA must do in your lifetime! Bucket list experience. After doing over a year of research and regular communication with Nadine we decided to book with ASEC. We decided to do a 5 day shark dive with our accommodations through Mariner Guesthouse in Simon's Town. Nadine set up everything and worked to find us additional activities to do after our dives everyday. All 5 of our dives went out, and we saw multiple sharks everyday. ASEC even refunded us money if the shark sightings were not up to their standards which was not expected but definitely an added treat. The staff onboard was outstanding. They provided great educational facts about the sharks and their environment. I ended up getting severely seasick on multiple of the dives (which in no way shape or form is their fault) and the staff made sure I had everything I needed while on board and even checked up on me while at the guesthouse. They worked to accommodate us given my unfortunate case of seasickness which they didn't have to do. I appreciated this so much. Overall our dives were an A+ experience. We highly recommend going with ASEC because they are the only company in False Bay that use regulators allowing you to stay under water to maximize your viewing experience. They provide you with wetsuits, boots and masks to brave the cold African waters. They also provide snacks and beverages for the guests. They care about the environment, which was a great plus for us, not allowing for anything to go overboard. They truly care about these magnificent animals.Written 25 November 2018

- FarAway1669290 contributionsGreat Experience!Capt. Rob and his whole crew are terrific. From booking through the tour and back to the dock everyone was great. On the way out to Seal Island we saw one whale. The tour was very organized and everyone was very helpful and provided us with so much information on the sharks, seals and other local animals and sea life. Having the hooka air system really made the experience much better. It was a chilly morning for our tour but the layout of the boat We were able to stay down the whole time in the cage and never missed a "swim by" from any of the sharks. If you are looking for a great adventure, contact the African Shark Eco Charter folks...you will not be disappointed Ken D, Deland FloridaWritten 17 September 2018
- Peter B0 contributionsAwesome! After much research we chose ASEC so save yourself the legwork and book them now! 15 on the boat and that seemed a lot until the first group went in then gt all ran very smoothly. We all got to spend at least 20 minutes with 2 metre + seven fins the weather was crap but you didn't really notice with the friendly informative crew and magnificent fish! If you are thinking about it do it! And dont worry about age i am a 58 year old with a dodgy leg! They are also the only boat that offers piped air so you dont have to surface for 20 minutes! Thanks to all a ASEC. XWritten 14 September 2018
- Ralph P0 contributionsSeals, sharks and whales!! Fantastic. We booked the early morning sunrise trip and had a whale of a time!! A party of four, 1-viewer and 3 shark cage divers. We all loved it from first minute until the last despite the cold September morning weather. The guys were all knowledgeable and fun with an obvious interest in what they were doing and also seemed to really want us to share and enjoy the wildlife experiences. We saw seals at the Island hard to miss them. :) Then we dived and spent as long as we could handle in the water with 7-gill sharks. Sadly no great whites but we had been warned that they hadn't been seen for a while. It was exciting and interesting in the cage. Then for an unexpected bonus on the return trip we de-toured to see some amazing close-up encounters with several whales. Not sure if this is a usual part of the trip but we absolutely loved it!! Big thanks for a memorable morning to the whole team.Written 7 September 2018
- junesing0 contributionsProfessionalWe read all the reviews and decided to sign up with ASEC. They sent reminders to ensure our punctual arrivals at 640 am on the pier. The boat, all equipment and wet suits seemed well maintained. Light snacks and refreshments were provided. Fleeced ponchos keep us warm. Eventhough I didn’t go into the cage dive because I got seasick, I enjoyed the excitement of seeing two cow sharks during our 4 hour trip.Written 1 September 2018

After days of poor weather, we received notification that the dive would happen. The sea was still angry, but the wind had abated. There were nine other divers on the trip. It took about one hour to reach the dive area off Seal Island. We were given wet suits appropriate for the cold water, including a hoodie. Time in the cage was limited to 20 minutes. Standing in the cage was difficult due to the swell and waves as the cage banged up against the boat. The water temperature, I was told was 17C or 62F. The coldest water I have ever willingly put my face in.
The Great Whites were not visiting the area, but the beautiful Bronze Whaler appeared along with numerous other species of shark.
My dealings with the office staff was 5-star. After the dive, you receive a discount for the nearby restaurant.

Once-in-a-lifetime experience! The trip lasted approximately 4 hours. The staff was incredible, working very hard to make sure we found and were able to swim with sharks. We viewed about four to five sharks and lots of seals. I would strongly recommend this tour!

I'd been planning my trip to the Great White Shark Capital of the world for over 6 months, and the shark dive was one of the first things I booked after doing extensive research on all the operators running out of False Bay. Carmen answered a billion questions a long the way - and then when tragedy struck the day before my dive -high winds which made for unsafe dives ... she moved mountains for me to ensure I was able to dive with a competitor out of Gansbaai (where it wasn't as windy). I would have been devastated had I not gotten to dive with sharks, so Carmen SAVED my trip! I can't thank her enough! I was so grateful I made a point to stop by the shop the day after my dive to thank her in person. And she was just as delightful and gracious in person as well. I wore my ASEC hoodie yesterday, that's what made me think of her and me wanting to review this company!
On top of rerouting my dive, she also secured me a driver for the 4 hr RT journey, because I didn't have a rental car. She truly went above and beyond!
This might be common in South Africa...but in America we don't typically go out of our way to sell you on our competition! So I was humbled and eternally grateful for the team spirit attitude Carmen had! Thank you thank you thank you! I do hope to eventually get back to South Africa and dive with ASEC - because I do think they're a fantastic organization with ethical practices.

Disappointing trip all round. Ironically this Shark dive is based in False bay and you’d have to wonder are there any sharks there at all. Not a sniff of a shark on a lovely calm sunny afternoon. Got chatting to the crew that mentioned there hadn’t been any sharks seen in 6 days and not a great white seen since 2018. Found it abit rich for the lady in the dock to charge us for sea sickness wrist bands and water proof phone covers considering there was another party out before us in the AM that saw no sharks. Come on charging for that when they pretty much knew we weren’t gonna see any sharks , give me a break. So ya no sea sickness just the sickness of parting with nearly 200€ for a glorified whale watching trip. Also found out after of another party went in August for a similar over priced whale watching trip that didn’t feature any sharks. To be fair crew were friendly and apologetic but I’d have to question their claim that they find the sharks 90% of the time.

Thank you for your views and we are very sorry that the sharks, which, we must remember, are wild life, and do not come when called, were not around on this day. We would certainly not still be in business, with great reviews, if there were never sharks, that doesn't make sense. As far as sea sickness bands and pouches, again, these are offered, not forced, and how would you have felt, had there been sharks and you did not have a pouch. We cannot guarantee wild life, no safari, no birding trip and no shark trip, can ever guarantee wild life, but we do offer a voucher for non-sightings, which is, in effect, us taking responsibility for nature. We are very clear about what sharks we have seen and what sharks we hope to see. So again, i am sorry that the sharks did not come out to play on your trip.

The communication with this group was incredibly frustrating. Unanswered calls, emails that weren't replied to, and ultimately based on false marketing--there haven't been any great white sharks seen in False Bay in about 5 years according to the staff on our boat.
We booked months in advance, but when we arrived in Cape Town, we discovered there had been a scheduling error with our other tours. I sent an email inquiring about whether we could switch our tour to another day, and got no response. When I finally got ahold of them at 9:30pm with the help of our hotel concierge because we still hadn't heard about our scheduled pickup time for the next morning, we were told that our initial booking had been cancelled, and our date had been changed to a different day that we could not attend. I stated that we could not make the new booked date (which was done without communication or consent), and requested that we attend what we had originally booked. The office manager stated that they had already given our spots on the morning trip away to someone else (again, without any communication to us), so we'd have to attend the afternoon trip. This timing made us adjust other plans that we'd had for the afternoon as well.
When we got to the boat, the crew had my family suit up first, but then wait until there was a shark sighting before we got into the water. They talked about how the morning dive had been great, but when asked about any Great Whites (which are plastered all over the website), they revealed that there haven't been any sightings of them in about 5 years! The crew worked extremely hard to chum the waters, but after two hours of sitting on the sunny deck in neoprene wetsuits, we were told that they were calling it a day, and we wouldn't be getting in the water.
I understand that wild animals are unpredictable, and the sharks are not kept in a tank, so there are no guarantees. When I reached out to request a 50% refund given the hassle we'd had with our bookings being changed, the lack of communication, and the ultimate waste of our precious vacation time, I was told that we would receive vouchers for another trip. Given our other scheduled plans, we are unable to use vouchers, so those were never sent either.
Again, the crew on the boat was great, and worked SO hard to ensure our safety and enjoyment of the day. The office staff on the other hand is a nightmare to work with, and don't expect to see any Great Whites. Go for a scuba dive instead, or save your money.

I am quite convinced that you have reviewed the wrong company! We do not have great whites "plastered" all over our website, and we are highly responsive to any emails, phone calls and WhatsApp messages, we are the only company that is available from 05h00 to 21h00 7 days a week 365 days a year!

What an amazing experience! Steph, Jason, and Ernest were a phenomenal crew - knowledgeable, nice, funny, and thoughtful. They suited us up in gear and we took turns in the shark cage. We felt safe at all times. It was not scary at all. We saw about ten bronze whaler sharks up close. On the trip back to the harbor we saw a bait ball of sardines with a thousand dolphins, some Bryde’s Whales, seals, birds, and penguins feeding. We capped off the trip with a sunfish sighting. This was a once in a lifetime experience!

From the beginning of my booking the tour operator was very quick to answer my questions and concerns. The first two trips had to cancel the m the mornings but he arranged for an afternoon tour. Boat operators were very informative and had a lot of knowledge. We passed seal island too. I’m am so glad that I chose this company as the small group and more intimate trip was something that has been on my bucket list for YEARS!

The staff were excellent and able to give us lots of advice ahead of this tour. It's clear the company truly cares about the sharks and conservation of the ocean. I only wish they gave us a practice run with the rebreathers before going in! The expereince was excellent and obviously the sharks were incredible and came right up to the cage. It's a must do for anyone in Cape Town or Simons Town. My recommendations for fellow travellers: ask for a few practice breaths with the rebreathers if you haven't used them before, bring extra layers, it can get chilly on the ocean, and bring nose plugs for the drives past seal island!

Cancelled a first time, postponed the next day despite beautiful weather... Okay.
The next day cancelled again despite the weather still very good.
Reimbursement proposal with expenses or go to confreres in Gansbaii.
6h car A/R to see nothing unfortunately. Proposed Gansbaii club: tourist factory
I would definitely not recommend.

Do we need to be certified divers for this? (Which we are).
Does the trip leave from Simons Town to Seal Island?
