A Miniature Railway Through great Landscape and La Macarena Waterfall
Mar 2020
This little train is well worth the trip through fabulous countryside where wild horses roam to the Macarena Waterfall where the train stops for you to visit this lovely place. It is like going back in time. Well worth the visit and good value.

Ridiculously expensive and the finest example of exploitative tourism
Mar 2020
At 2100 ARS per person (£26.25 at 80ARS to 1GBP), it's disproportionately expensive. Extortionate, even. And if we'd have done our research prior to visiting the park, we'd have known we could get a bus or taxi to the end of the world post office without having to take this train, which we so wish we'd have done.

What really made me angry though, was the blatant racket involving the photographers (you already know the kind, they look official and force you to take a cringeworthy pic before the attraction and then hope you buy it later). They are the reason the queue to get on the train took so long. Call us killjoys if you wish, but we refused to have our picture taken once we eventually got through the turnstile as we cannot stand this type of tourism – at best it's an annoyance, at worst it's exploitative. So, roughly 10 minutes into the journey (it's very slow and we probably only covered a couple hundred yards), we stop at a 'station' for 20 minutes(!!) under the pretence of visiting a waterfall. You do actually see a waterfall, but it's no Iguazu and it was annoying as the journey had only just begun. But of course the real reason we were stopping was so (shock horror) we could purchase the cheesy photos that many of us had been coerced into taking prior to embarking with some clown dressed in a prison uniform. As a practice it seemed nothing out of the ordinary as it's a common everywhere of course. But once we were all back on the train and ready to continue the journey, the photographers, of which there were about four or five, proceeded to walk the length of the train, inside and outside, with photographs in hand, looking for the people in the photos. Once they'd located the subjects they approached them directly, aggressively trying to get them to buy them, presumably at an extortionate price. At that point I actually wished we'd had our pictures taken just so I could tell them to **** off. I felt incredibly uncomfortable with it and couldn't believe what I was seeing. My wife and I have travelled to over 60 countries together and we know the game well; wherever you go, tourists are fair game and the aim of said game is to get as much money out of them as possible. But this felt different and I've never experienced such flagrant behaviour.

I am fully aware that many people would not be as offended as we were and let it wash over them. If that's you then it's your choice. But I am still annoyed we went on such an overpriced and blatantly exploitative 'attraction' and didn't use our better judgement, so if I can prevent even a handful of people from wasting their money and being put in the same situation it will be worth every bit of my time writing this review.

Delightful train ride, walk up to a waterfall and informative narration
Feb 2020
A delightful train ride through the area where prisoners felled trees years ago. The prison has since closed, but Ushuaia was originally a prison location due to its unscalable mountains at the end of the world. The train stops about halfway before the turn around where you get off and walk up to a waterfall and (and claim the photo they took of you when you boarded the train!) An informative narration was played in our native language as we traveled along.

Over-hyped experience covering only a small section of the National Park
Feb 2020
We purchased a return ticket for the Train, which only runs for approximately 7 kms into the Tierra del Fuego National Park, lasting 50 minutes including 1 stop to see an unimpressive waterfall. The destination is in the middle of nowhere, and you stop for 10 minutes before returning. The line is pretty enough following the River Lapataia, but the trip is not really worth the cost.

The Station is about 20 minutes out of Ushuaia by local bus or taxi ($8-10). As the start of the train trip is within the National Park, you also have to pay the Park entry fee of $8 pp, and if you have purchased a voucher, this has to be exchanged for the train ticket (same desk as buying the Park entry fee).

When negotiating with a taxi driver to take us to the Train station, He suggested he took us to the Station, and we catch the train 1 way, and then he would pick us up and take us on a 3 hour tour of the National Park for $90. We were so glad we decided to do this.

Gabriel (Taxi 282) had our trip worked out for us, through the National Park! It’s a well worn tourist trail but worth doing. First we went to the southernmost Post Office in the world and sent ( at great expense!!) postcards from the end of the world to the grandchildren!! It was a beautiful lake, made even better by the sunshine and clouds and huge birds ( South American Caracaras?? ) and we walked along the nature trail through the woods by the lake!
Next stop, after a quick peer at the turbal ( peat bog) to our second stop. Another lake and a Visitors Centre, before going to Lake Acigami where we could walk back to the river!! Gabriel also stopped so that we could walk to Laguna Negra, very peaceful and totally silent and also a couple of viewpoints as well as a walk to the Beavers Dam. (Senda Castorera)

We then drove to the very end of the world, with a sign that says that you have reached the end of the Pan-American Highway and Alaska is 17,848 kilometres away! A quick drive up to the start of the walk to the glaciers and we were done!! The trip had lasted 6 hours so we paid him 130$ - still less than a ships trip for one person though!!

Had a well earned Cape Horn beer and treated ourselves to 1 hrs free wifi before walking back to the ship.

So in summary, You can either do as we did (forfeiting the return Train trip) , or forget the train and take a taxi to the National Park direct from Ushuaia. I think the taxi tour we did is a standard route around the Park, but our Driver Gabriel was very good and let us do some additional stops.

Lovely scenery and interesting history.
It takes about an hour to do the ride. It’s not very far to travel, but it’s just at a really slow speed. It was a nice way to see the scenery and hear the history of what it would have been like for the prisoners. I think the best part was seeing all the tree stumps from where they (the prisoners) had cut down the trees. Because the weather is normally quite cold here the rate of decomposition is very slow.
Although I enjoyed the ride it’s not something I would probably do again.

Very pretty ride
Feb 2020
A slow ride through the countryside with interesting historical information. Would have liked more time at the train station before leaving and at the Macarena stop halfway. When we arrived at the end we were taken by coach to the lakeside. Again, would have liked more time there. We had superb weather which we were told is unusual. Would not have been so nice in the rain!

Overhyped train ride
It was lame. It’s just a train ride to and from the Tierra del Fuego National Park. It only sends guests to the park and leaves (for return guests) immediately. I asked them to leave me in the park and let me join the next trip back. They did, but the place where they left me doesn’t have much signs on the routes and is very dusty. Not worth it.
