About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Bossies0 contributionsGreat experience!Perfect for the whole family. Relaxed and easygoing tour guide, Ben van der Merwe, was super engaging and knowledgeable. You leave feeling that you have definitely learned something, and in a fun way. So much to see, do and experience. Being able to feed the ostriches a big highlight for us.Written 21 February 2025
- Cosmoss0 contributionsYou have to go to an ostrich farm in oudtshoorn just not sure this is the oneWe have gone there a number of times over many years and unfortunately it just hasn't changed and kept up with the times. Not sure if the others are better. Just looks and feels a bit old and neglectedWritten 24 January 2025
- Shruti-Pramod0 contributionsOldest ostrich farm in the world!Visited here on Jan-1, 2025 as our 2nd attraction of the day. The staff first showed us ostrich eggs & explained that they were huge & hardy enough to stand upon by humans even wearing shoes and demoed the same. Next, we were taken to visit adult ostriches and a bucket of feed was given using which we could feed and take photo ops with them. After that we were taken to the ostrich nursery to see them as newly born and finally escorted into the gift shop to know about all the different products made from ostriches (like painted egg shell displays, feather dusters etc) and an ostrich skeleton was also explained to us (they have very small brain which makes them forgetful and 2 toes on their feet and they injest stones to help grind the food in their stomachs as they are teethless etc). The restaurant here also served our Indian tour group of 25 pax an Indian lunch with papad also & cheesecake for dessert.Written 6 January 2025
- G9994WRguillaumec0 contributionsUnique experienceVery Nice tour with Johnathan, instructive and funny. Something that you can hardly see somewhere else, I recommand it if your are in Oudtshoorn!Written 26 November 2024
- Coastal399857042350 contributionsExcellent experienceOur trip to Highgate was the highlight of our vacation! The pricing is reasonable and our guide, Matt, spoke 4 different languages, was so knowledgeable, kind, patient and excellent with our 4-year old son! Would definitely recommend a trip here to anyone.Written 17 November 2024
- awilkie10 contributionsGreat experience! Ben was a super in showing us around!Amazing place! Very worth popping in to get a great tour of the ostrich farm! Ben was fabulous gave us an amazing experience with some personal touches including feeding the birds, meeting babies and seeing how the ostrich egged are used for art!Written 25 October 2024
- AHMMYEE0 contributionsFun excursion to see OstrichesOur travel guide Craig Milner took us to the Highgate Ostrich Farm in South Africa. The presenter there, Samantha was very informative. She showed us all the products that are produced from ostriches. We visited the ostrich chicks and also had an opportunity to feed the ostriches. We learned about the types of Ostriches in Africa.Written 27 August 2024
- Carol W0 contributionsAvoid, not worth itWe arrived and immediately (thank goodness), we were told that the facilities were either not working or not available. Such a waste of as what you see on their website is nothing like you see on the farm. No babies, no incubator, no nothing. A complete waste of time and effort. Not worth going…Written 26 June 2024
- hiltontait0 contributionsWas expecting moreWe stopped off on a suggestion but despite the warm welcome we opted out of going on the tour as we were pressed for time. We decided to just have breakfast at the on-site Peppertree Restaurant. We were the first customers at 08:30 but they were unprepared for guests so still had to set up everything. The order was taken quickly but the breakfast took a long time to prepare and then wasn't great. Eggs which were supposed to have been soft were hard, and the cappuccinos were luke warm. The shop was interesting but seemed expensive. Overall the place seems to be showing that's its the oldest in the area.Written 6 April 2024
- maaikev8660 contributionsAmazing ostriches tourWe had an amazing tour! Geraldine knows a lot about ostriches and talks about them with enthusiasm! She speaks very clear English so it is easy to understand. You can see that the ostriches are treated well and that they are proud of their farm. I would definitely recommend the tour!Written 9 March 2024
- Foodietracker0 contributionsInteresting and informativeI really wasn't sure about this tour, but we arrived in Outshoorn about 2pm and had a couple of hours to kill. It was actually very informative and a bit of fun. Unfortunatley in Late Feb the last of the eggs have hacthed for the season, but we did get to hold a baby Ostrich and feed the customer friendly adults. Great way to spend an hour.Written 1 March 2024
- Footprints5701660 contributionsGreat tour from Samantha! This was better than we expected. We did the tour with Samantha and she was so lovely and knowledgeable about the ostriches. We saw a few different species, she showed us some eggs, how they made things from the feathers and give us a history on the farm itself. She then showed us the babies and we got to feed some other ostriches which was hilarious. Overall, we throughly enjoyed this tour and would recommend it.Written 3 February 2024
- mariaclaudiabedotti0 contributionsBad experiencePoor experience It lasted nothing more than 25 minutes. We saw some ostrichs and some ostrich chicks. That’s all. It is not worthwhile.Written 12 January 2024
- Anne_MarieR7530 contributionsFarm and tasting tour, a must do!Great tour of the ostrich farm, our guide Samantha was so knowledgeable and would have the best stories! A wonderful learning experience! As I booked the tour and meal I then went to the restaurant area and got to have a really enjoyable culinary experience. I had never had ostrich before I visited South Africa and it was as surprising as delicious. My waiter, Ilsa made the tasting even more delightful with her tips and comments! I would definitely recommend doing the farm and tasting tour! Wonderful!Written 13 December 2023
- neeratraveler0 contributionsInteresting experienceThe Highgate Ostrich show farm near Oudshoom was delightful. Our group had a private tour that was very informative. Later we had a chance to walk around and look at the Ostrich and feed them if interested in doing so. There is a gift shop with things such as ostrich feather dusters. There is also a restaurant- worth a visit.Written 16 November 2023

We visited the Highgate Ostrich Farm and were absolutely thrilled! The tour was very entertaining and our guide Jonathan designed it with a lot of expertise and humor. He explained everything about the ostriches and the history of the farm in a fun way – it was never boring, it was always exciting!
Seeing the ostriches up close was definitely a highlight. Jonathan had an answer to every question and gave us many interesting facts.
The best came to the end: a delicious, freshly prepared meal that was simply outstanding. It was the perfect end to this great day.
We can only recommend the tour to anyone who wants to learn more about ostriches and enjoy a good meal at the same time. An unforgettable experience

We had an amazing time on the ostrich farm. Matti is the best guide we had here in South Africa. He made us comfortable and explained everything with a lot of enthusiam! We visited the farm with our grandfather who only speaks Flemish. Matti spoke slow and clear in Africans and made sure that we understood all the information. We could ask all our questions and learned a lot.
Matti, if you reading this, thank you very much. You have a place in our hearts and you will be a fabulous teacher!!
Lots of love, the Pollet family

We had a wonderful time with our guide Matty. He was charming and told us a lot about the animals and plants on the farm. It was such a great experience and he even made it more special and fun. Of course the Animals are there for Show and also for their meat, skin and feathers…There's nothing you can sugarcoat about it. But at least they looked all heathy and had Space. dont miss out to feed them but be careful with your Fingers! All the best for Matty with his studies!

We had the best time this morning at Highgate.
Samantha, our tour guide, made our tour so informative and fun- we all (from adults to 12 and 9 year olds) cannot recommend it enough.
We have fallen in love with these animals, and spent the tour learning and laughing!

It was a really good experience to be taken around the show farm with Jonathan. I learned so much from him about these fascinating creatures which were done with great humour. I would thoroughly recommend a visit here in a very quiet and relaxed setting. A perfect way to spend an hour or two if you are in the area.

My family and I visited the Highgate farm on our roadtrip down to Plettenberg Bay and boy was it worth it! Although it was a quaint location it definitely packed a powerful punch. We were lead by Matty, our super fun, and formative tour guide who took us around each section. He really made our day special, and athough we were part of a group, Matty always went above and beyond to ensure each of us were ok - even organically switching languages on occasion to include all attending! The farm was really interesting - would recommend those visiting to do the tour!

Booked direct on line tour included classic lunch. Absolutely fantastic knowledge of our guide apologies I cannot remember his name but he took just the two of us at 12 noon tour. Explained everything we needed to know and even held a 2 day old Ostrich along with feeding the older ones, if you are travelling on the Garden route stop and do this with lunch you will not be disappointed the food was out of this world nothing what I expected for the price we paid, the staff can't do enough keep up the great work.

We visited on a whim in mid October during a quiet Saturday afternoon, and wow did it make our day.
We had a quick lunch and then met our guide Johnathan who gave a tour around the small compound. He was very welcoming, knowledgable on ostriches and had a great sense of humour. He was very kind to take us around privately so we weren’t stuck with the larger groups and thus our time with the ostriches was not diluted at all! Thank you Johnathan!
As for the show farm, it’s a small but very interesting operation. A lot of fun for an afternoon if you go in with no expectations and just want to have fun interacting with these very strange but beautiful animals!

Great experience, very informative and our tour guide Samantha was very professional and entertaining.
Were able to see South African, Zimbabwean and Kenyan Ostriches.
Eggs, breading, teens and feed fully grown Ostriches.
Restaurant could benefit by having more experienced staff however on a whole a good experience.

This place exceeded my expectations. Not too commercial which was a blessing and the guide was extremely informative. We went on a 9.30 am tour which I would recommend as not busy and a bit cooler 👍. This was definitely one of the highlights of our stay in SA

Hello - are you open all through the year please? We will be travelling to Oudtshoorn in February next year and hope that your farm will be open. How far ahead should we book online? Is it more expensive and difficult to get in if we only book on the day? Thanks, Jane
