Felt like this was really misleading
We saw 3 seals. The team were nice but it was just really disappointing. I feel like we wasted time and money for something when we were told the best time to go but initially asked to go later.

      Seals and Coastline Delights
Great trip. It was great to see Knysna Head through the storied Knysna Heads and see the seals playing swimming in the ocean.

Much more than what we expected
With Ashley our deck captain and Johannes our Skipper, we took on this experience to explore the ocean beyond the Knysna heads. We saw the immense power of the ocean having carved out deep caves into the rocks, and the whale fin-shaped rock towering as if a natural statue amidst the gushing waves. Shortly into our exciting haphazard approach of the higher waves, Ashley spotted a whale. Much to everyone's surprise, upon following this huge giant, we learnt about their "footprints" in the water, and could assist in spotting another smaller creature. This time it turned out to be the whale's calf. Johannes' skill to see and follow them both, whilst pointing out the seals and even a hammerhead shark, was remarkable. We made a turnaround at Buffalo Bay from where we could again appreciate the beautiful coastline, and then heading back to the jetty, carefully navigating through the treacherous rocks at the Heads. This was an unforgettable experience and we'll be certain to return again soon.

      Highlight of our holiday
This trip was well worthwhile. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. There were 5 couples on the boat, and although the sea was rough we felt safe. We were very lucky to spot a humpback whale with calf who breached several times for us. Also saw 2 different dolphin pods

First time on the Indian Ocean - Wow
Nigel and Mark looked after us very well. We were very lucky as there were only 4 of us on the boat so it was very much like a private trip. Unfortunately the only sea life we saw was a seal, but sailing through the heads and into the ocean and return is very exciting. The dinner platter was very good. They coped with my wife’s gluten free allergy very well and texted to check what they were planning worked.

      A fantastic experience
An absolutely amazing trip. Sailing into the lagoon through the heads is an awning experience. We were lucky to have relatively calm water with good wind. We also saw a school of dolphins playing alongside the boat. The dinner platter was delicious and the bubbly very good.

Incredible to see humpback whales up close
The tour was well organised and staff were friendly. You are not guaranteed to see whales, as nature can't be planned! But the skipper and watchers worked hard to ensure we saw whales. We saw a couple of singular whales at a bit of a distance, then right near the end of the trip we found a whole group of humpbacks. The skipper gave us a longer trip to allow us to view them properly at a close distance and follow them for a good amount of time, which was greatly appreciated. An amazing experience, would definitely recommend!

      Whales are awesome creatures
Wasn’t sure about going initially due to the cost and thinking it was unlikely to see any whales, but how wrong i was….the trip was worth every penny and the whales really didn’t disappoint, not just humpback whales but seals and dolphins too. A great fun boat ride experience which does require some seaworthy tummy, so eat sensibly and take some ginger tablets if you are prone to seasickness. The big ocean is choppy and boats rocks !! I would absolutely recommend this trip with Ocean Defender to anyone who visits Knysna. The best thing I did on my holidays whilst staying here.

      Whale watching in Knysna
Great experience from beginning to end. The team were incredibly helpful when booking and really welcoming when we arrived. The briefing before we left was informative and safety was a priority. We saw two Humpback Whales with their calves as well as a Southern Right Whale, also with her calf (we saw all of these several times). We also saw a pod of dolphins just relaxing near the shore, a few seals who were interested in our boat and an Albatross. Our guide was really informative and we learnt a lot about the whales, dolphins, seals and their lives along the coast of South Africa. The team were really concerned about the welfare of the animals and their space was always respected. Would certainly recommend. This company also have a great coffee shop when you return which is well worth a visit!

Hi, thank you so much for the review! We are so glad that you had a great sail with us! I'm glad that you enjoyed the food! It is more of a light meal of savory snacks, cheeses, and seasonal fruits that is served picnic-style on the deck of the yacht and can be compared to finger foods. Please join us again!

On the day we booked, it was reported that from 3 p.m. onwards there would be overcast skies and only 17 degrees. We had booked the 12 p.m. tour. This was cancelled because there were no other bookings. Instead we were offered the sunset tour. We agreed to it, knowing full well that there would be no sunset because of the clouds. But the weather forecast for the coming days was no better. However, I don't understand why they didn't try to move the evening bookings to midday. The sun was still shining in places then. The trip was pretty wild because of the sea. We had poor visibility and the high waves meant that we were constantly clinging to something because we were being shaken violently. We didn't dare take photos because we were worried that the next wave would drop our phones. It also got very cold, so we needed almost all of our blankets. The skipper was good, knew what he was doing and had experience from an eight-month sailing trip. But for some of us the tour was no fun. If the weather had been nice it would have been great. We did see a few dolphins in the distance. There was very little information. We didn't like the food either. But maybe the other participants did. We were lucky that the clouds came up halfway through sunset.

Conclusion: Good skipper, great tour in good weather. Not much fun in heavily overcast skies due to poor visibility and depending on the waves

Hi, Thank you so much for your review. Our sunset cruise is our most popular charter and we do tend to get more bookings for that option over the day charter hence why we rescheduled you to the sunset cruise. The Sunset Cruise also does still proceed even though it may be a bit cloudy and only canceled in the event of rain. Also, this charter is focused on sailing and isn't a permitted vessel to approach marine life. It is also recommended on all our platforms that participants must bring warm jackets with them on board especially at Sunset as the temperature does tend to drop. Blankets are also available on board the vessel and can be requested from the crew. This vessel is also a mono-hull sailing vessel (a single hull) and provided the wind is right we will sail which does make the vessel lean in full sail. It's a pity that Mother Nature was not on our side that day with clear skies.
