About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Shalini20180 contributionsBird with a birderI booked a morning birding tour with Dave. Nikki, who managed the bookings, was excellent and responds instantly to queries and questions. I mentioned that I had dipped on the Cape Rockjumper on previous locations. Dave took a detour and it was my first bird of the day. What a cracking bird?!! Dave is passionate about birds and whales, and generously shares his knowledge with enthusiasm. He has many birding stories and knows the art of storytelling. After a long morning birding, we spent the afternoon whale watching. It was a wonderful day, thanks to Dave and Nikki.Written 13 September 2024
- EmaKelly0 contributionsBird Watching with Dave de Beer was the highlight of our trip. The bird watching trip with Dave de Beer was a highlight of our two week trip to South Africa. His knowledge of the landscape, places, and birds was exceptional. The route we went showed us lots of different habitats and species. We were also lucky enough to see a whale from the shore. Such a delight to meet someone who is so passionate about the environment.Written 8 July 2024
- najock0 contributionsWe had a 'Whale' of a time!...Whilst on holiday in Hermanus we were advised this was a must do experience & that it was. Dave is so knowledgeable and presents the facts & stories so well, from the visit to the whale museum explaining the biology & history of the whales & stopping at various viewpoints along the coast viewing the whales in their natural habitat, Dave was an awesome, knowledgeable & friendly guide. Whilst you can spot whales from the coastline which is amazing in itself, Dave can tell you & show you so much more about how & why they are there with mind-blowing facts & stories. Dave kindly signed his amazing book of photographs that is a special souvenir of our time in Hermanus. Highly recommend Dave & his tour :-)Written 1 October 2023

Landed in Hermanus, from Ireland.
Got a suggestion from hotel to consider this tour, boats not sailing due to bad weather.
Dave met us at whale museum, Wow this guy is good, turned a suggested walking tour into what can only be described as the best of craic! Interaction, knowledge of subject was exemplary.
Known as the Whale whisperer locally, within 2 mins of gathering at the first vantage point, we saw 8 whales, awesome experience, a 2/3 hour tour finished too quickly, what Dave doesn’t know about whales I don’t know,
Brilliant 10/10
Buy this guys book, Hermanus Whales, outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave is very knowledgeable and passionate about the wonderful whales here at Hermanus.
We were unable to do a boat trip due to the windy weather thankfully Dave made our morning very special.
He took us to several different spots where we managed to sight a number of whales including mothers and calves and a group of females with a male - the last attempt of mating!
Dave also brought the museum to life during the visit - adapting his information to how long we wanted to stay.
He was very accommodating with transfers etc.

We booked a boat trip first but unfortunately it got canceled due to bad weather conditions. We didn’t have the flexibility to rebook a boat trip so at first we were very sad to miss this opportunity during our roadtrip through South-Africa… Luckily, Dave came to the rescue! He took his time to guide us towards land based whale-sightings, even though the whales were on the other side of Hermanus. During our trip Dave patiently answered all our whale-related questions and we considered ourselves very fortunate to learn from him. Overall a top experience, we did not have to miss out on the whales, despite our boat trip being cancelled, and we had a great time talking to Dave!

We were a group of 10 and it so happened that we could not take the boat due to choppy waters. Dave suggested we walk through the coast where we could see the whales. In our opinion, the walk was short and we could see the whales at quite a distance. While we do understand whales do not come close to the shore, but R1000 per person was a bit to steep for a 1 hour walk on a public pathway. Dave was brilliant in terms of his information about whales and his briefing inside the whale museum was truly informative. He did give his book to us which was fantastic.

Dave has a very engaging approach, ensuring we had a full understanding of the southern right whale, with facts that have meant we’ve all remembered them! Dave’s knowledge and enthusiasm for whales is evident and we were really pleased to have joined him on a tour. Would definitely recommend.

Dave has that “magic” touch when it comes to Nature.
What a passionate and authentic tour. This man lives for his passion; whales and photography. After an inspired story in the museum, Dave took us on the road. His years of experience mean that he takes you into his world where he does everything to give what you came for... whale watching! We were a little later in the season (2nd week of November)... but what seemed incredible became a moment to
Never forget... 2 mother Whales each with a youngster who put on a show.
What an acquaintance this man has, like stepping into a National Geografic or Discovery episode with Dave speaking. You won't be disappointed if you give Dave space. Hesitated to do a boat tour but glad we went for the land tour with Dave. I say do!

Starting at the whale museum in Hermanus this tour will provide you with a lot of interesting information about whales. Dave truly is a whale expert and a captivating storyteller. We enjoyed it, even though we had to wait till the next day to see a whale due to the weather. :-) We heard other guests saw tons of whales together with Dave. We recommend this tour!

An absolutely spectacular experience.
Dave has years of knowledge of exactly where to go to get the best possible chance of seeing the most amazing whales.
The weather had been poor in recent days so Dave knew exactly where this would have impacted our chances of seeing them and he took us to the best possible spots. We saw a huge amount of whales (they come in pairs, the "mummy whale" and the "baby whale"). Oh and we were lucky enough to spot the white whale too! So chuffed. Thanks for a great experience Dave. Definitely recommend. From Will and Ashleigh

We started with a boat based tour, followed by a land based tour with Dave. Dave is a friend of the whales and has spent over 20 years with these gentle giants of the oceans. He is knowledgeable and passionate, and shares information as stories making the whole experience interesting and exciting. If you are in Hermanus for the whales, do not miss the opportunity to do a tour with Dave.

We took a boat trip in the morning and had a great time but the whale encounter was limited and at quite a distance as the mother and calf were close to shore. We met up with Dave in the afternoon with expectations were quite low, and set off immediately for the far side of the bay at De Kelders. On arrival we saw 4 pairs of mother and calf southern right whales at very close quarters, as they were hugging the shore in the shallow waters. We observed many breaches and even a load and wonderful whale call from a mother (presumably an instruction to her calf to stay close). Dave has an amazing knowledge of the whales and their environment and if there is an experience to be found, he will find it! This was a try highlight of our trip despite being at the end of the season with the majority of whales having moved away to their feeding grounds.
