- scrabbler20150 contributionsGreat tripWe were unsure whether the trip would go ahead due to strong winds but fortunately it did. Rest assured that safety is a priority from this professional team who looked after us every step of the way. The tour had been booked by our travel agent and we were surprised to be offered coffee and muffins on arrival. There was a short talk about penguin conservation and a video safety briefing. Everyone was provided with a life jacket. Additionally there was a waterproof coat which proved to be very useful. The sea was very choppy at times but staff checked that we were OK. Unfortunately, We could not get very close to the island where the penguins and birds were but did have great sighting of the seals. What you see is down to nature on the day. We did not see any dolphins but the highlight was the whales of which we had great views. We were impressed that the team made sure that everyone on board had the opportunity to view the wildlife. Seeing sharks was also great but a little "manufactured" as people were on other boats to experience being in cages in water with the sharks. After the trip we had vegetable soup and a bread roll which was very welcome after a cold and blustery trip. The organisation was first rate and we would highly recommend this tour. Afterwards we drove to the penguin and seabird sanctuary which was free. We found this to be disappointing as all one could see was a few penguins behind glass.Written 9 September 2024
- 2014petert0 contributions12 out of 10, fully deservedExtremely professional crew, who created a fantastic experience. It starts with coffee and muffins for briefing, and ends with a hot soup for the debriefing. And with this attitude of care, the boat trip unfolds. Plenty of crew members are onboard, constantly checking if everyone is ok, asking people for their questions, obviously explaining the sightings. Definitely to repeat and recommend.Written 5 September 2024
- MRMRSPIP0 contributionsCool experience, though additional info would have been helpfulWe were extremely fortunate to have great winter weather and sightings the day we went - a breaching humpback whale, a couple brydes whales and multiple southern right whales including a mama & baby. Saw dolphins, seals and penguins as well. Onboard staff was great at sharing information, allowing for photography by all and taking care of the couple of folks who suffered a bit of seasickness. The boat is very accommodating and the provided ponchos were welcome when the boat was moving and/or you weren’t in the sun. While we did see sharks, I was a little disappointed that they were seen only in the context of being baited for a nearby shark cage boat. I expected a little more given Marine Dynamics conservation mission and the proclamation on the website that we would be visiting the “Shark Alley famous for great white shark sightings”. On board biologists confirmed there actually haven’t been great white shark sightings in nearly a decade there so that felt a little misleading. Additionally it would be helpful if the website were clearer on how long this tour takes. From being picked up around 6am from your Cape Town hotel, to the safety briefing and coffee, to the time on the water itself plus the lunch after, mandatory visit to the penguin sanctuary and the return to Cape Town, this is an 11 hour day - we got back at 5p. So don’t make the mistake of planning something afterwards like we did. I will say though that the driver was exceptionally accommodating in dropping people off at their desired locations, even if it wasn’t where they were picked up. So overall an enjoyable experience that could be improved with some updates to the website information.Written 27 August 2024
- chubby2280 contributionsLucky enough to see the whales 🐋The trip is very educational and we were lucky got chance seeing 4 out 5 sea animals. People are nice at Dyer Island Cruises, our driver is very nice too. Only one thing you need to be aware is the pick up time from the hotel is over 3 hrs before boat departure time 9 am listed on the web. All of us were picked up before 5:30 am in different hotels. - chrisbarton990 contributionsWhale watchingAmazing trip. Collected from Cape Town, stopped half way at a lovely coffee shop for a much needed pit stop and caffeine infusion. When we arrived we were advised that the sea was quite rough. We decided to carry on and the team looked after us amazingly well providing hot water bottles when people got cold and pointing out whales, birds, sunfish and seals.Written 20 July 2024
- Curiosity7152050 contributionsAmazing tourMy husband and I went on a Marine Big 5 tour in May, and I highly recommend this operator. Marine biologists onboard and the crew are extremely knowledgeable, and the fact that profits go into maintaining the research efforts and conservation, made the experience extra special. Keep in mind, that while the crew does the absolute most to spot the animals, whales/ dolphins are not guaranteed and it really depends on the day how much or how little you'd see. I'd say that seeing the Seal island alone was 100% worth the trip, if you've never seen a seal colony you'd be impressed. We got lucky and had a whale sighting even though we went a little bit off season. It is about 2-2,5h drive from Cape town, however, it's pretty scenic so it didn't feel daunting. Overall, it was a great trip!Written 20 June 2024
- KimonG_220 contributionsTop ClassUnbelievable experience and I'd highly recommend it. Great staff, excellent guides and trackers and just incredible to see the animals and birds in their natural environment.Written 27 May 2024
- Guide458009975330 contributionsAmazing experience. What a fantastic adventure, we really had a great day with Dyer Island Cruises, we did the Marine Big 5, spotted Marine birds, the bridel whale, dolphins, seals, we even saw a corper shark, after the trip we stopped by the penguin sanctuary. I would highly recommend this 5 star experience to anyone from South Africa as well as International Tourists. Really professional company, professional and super friendly staff, you can tell that they all love what they doing. Shout out to Janine, she was very helpful and took her time to show us around, she is one amazing Lady. We had an amazing experience and highly recommend this to anyone, whether you do the Marine Big 5 or Shark Cage diving.Written 16 May 2024

- EnriqueLR6780 contributionsMarine Big 5 tour- It was very well organized and even provided a weathercoat/raincoat which was very welcomed. - Fairly crowded on the boat. It wasn´t horrible but it was sometimes uncomfortable when suddenly a bunch of individuals crowded over to watch. That said, the crew did their best to distribute us. - We spent a third of the time chasing a bryde whale and once we managed to get a good view of it, we continue chasing it for a bit longer. On the one hand, not sure the whale would be very happy being chased non-stop. On the other hand, I reckon once we had the clear view we could´ve continued the trip trying to find new sea creatures. - The guide provided many interesting facts and the crew was nice and knowledgeable.Written 13 April 2024
- Quayline0 contributionsShark Cage Dive - a great experience! We had a really great day with Dyer Island doing their Shark Cage dive. It was well organised and we were fully briefed on the conservation work by a qualified and interesting Marine Biologist. We each spent about 30 minutes in the cage with several large Copper Sharks to provide continuous ‘entertainment’. After that we watched from the top deck for about an hour. Perfect photo opportunities. Very warm wetsuits and plenty of skilled crew to help. Delicious snacks too. A very worthy cause to support and what fun we had. We are pretty comfortable in the water but maybe worth saying we are well into our 70s so don’t think you can’t do this. It felt very safe. It felt 100% safe Delicious homemade soup and bread in their fabulous restaurant afterwards. Thank you. We think you are doing a fantastic job.Written 31 March 2024
- Darek_Tar_IE0 contributionsGood trip to see Sea Lions and some penguins and few coper sharksExperience was average. Well organised, but no dolphins or whales. It should be advertise more precisely. Like ... maybe you will be extremely lucky and you'll have a chance see a whale(s) or dolphins, but highly unlikely. Great white shark - no chance - twice every 10 year if you are working as staff.Written 7 January 2024
- jayno6660 contributionsA very worthwhile experience - good value for money and highly recommended.A fantastic boat trip. We were fortunate to see four of the big five, and thought the service and attentiveness of all the crew members was outstanding. We appreciated the commentary from the marine biologist who was a mine of interesting information. A particular highlight was the 20 minutes we spent with a mother and calf Southern Right whale, who put on a great performance, getting up close to the boat on a number of occasions. The seal colony off Dyer Island didn't disappoint either! We felt very safe as it's clear that the company takes safety very seriously, and ensured we were fully briefed before the trip, as well as provided with life jackets and optional water proof jackets. There was also storage on the boat for our personal belongings, to ensure they didn't get wet or slip overboard. The coffee and muffin before the trip, as well as the soup and freshly backed breadroll at the end of the trip, were both very nice touches, which helped stave off the hunger after an early start. All in all a very worthwhile experience which we'd highly recommend.Written 28 November 2023

Building the excitment as we left the harbour in search f the Marine Big 5. First we saw a Bottle Nosed dolphine, followed quickly by 3 penguins frolicking in the ocean. Then a small seal chasing a fish for its lunch, and then 3 bronze whaler sharks, quite close to our boat. Just as we started to turn to head back, Thar She Blows, and we came acorss a beautiful Southern Right whale, giving us a great view and a final big wave of its tale, as we left the animal in peace. A great boat ride, great informative crew, and a chance to meet Wilfred the owner. If you have time after your cruise, visit the Seabird Sancturay, very close by in Gansbaii, and see the incredible Conservation work carried out on injured birds and animals, we saw a small penguin who had just been rescuded, gave me chills all over, knowing there are many people out there who care.

we were lucky,a sunny day in August and a calm ocean,no wurries about sea sickness. After a warm welcome at the hotel, information about the trip, the wildlife and safy instructins,we got clicked in a lifevest and a rain jacket to keep us safe and dry. We got on the boat at the harbour and as soon as we drove out at the ocean there was a couple of whales in front of us! We stayed long enough to enjoy the view and take pictures. We visited the little islands with the seals and the penguins, saw the boat with the shark spotters. We felt very welcome and safe with the personel on board who informed us about the animals we saw and anwered all our questions. They kept a close eye on us for our safety on board and asked if we were ok and not feeling sick. When we got back to the hotel they were waiting for us with soup and little buns. Thank you Dyer for a very nice morning sea life spotting.

First off, it was a beautiful day for being winter. The water had calmed down substantially and we set off! There were still some swells and one of us got a bit queasy, even after dramamine. The crew was right on it and offered peppermint and ginger and soon were feeling much better! Kudos to the crew for their attentiveness!! Pickup at our hotel was perfect. We headed out in search of ocean critters and found Humpbacks, sharks, seals, penguins, and many birds. It was a great time, supported a good cause, and would recommend to anyone!!

It was a beautiful day, nice weather. The waves weren't that shaky ;-)
Dolphins came past the boat, penguins were swimming nicely. The seals were enjoying themselves on their rocks.
Although the whale season was already over, we were still very very lucky to spot some whales.
Last but not least we saw how the sharks were fed, which are very impressive animals.

My wife and I had a fantastic time with Dyer Island cruisers (Kleinbaai) and were fortunate enough to see 4 of the big 5. The crew were really friendly and the marine biologist gave some real in depth insights into the marine life that we saw on the day. On a side note the conservation efforts that the team are putting in to preserve the African Penguins is amazing and we were happy to invest in a Penguin Penthouse :)!
