About
This storytelling walk through the vineyards is in partnership with the Constantia Wine Route and has exclusive access to the private trails. Created by a leading travel journalist, the tour tells the story of the four winemakers who have helped to shape the Constantia Wine Valley over the past 330 years, and who helped to make it the most sought-after wine in the world in the 1700s, desired by everyone from Queen Victoria and Marie Antoinette to Casanova and Napoleon. The tour features 10 wine tastings, a harvest platter lunch and visits three of Cape Town's most iconic wine farms. This immersive experience is completely unique and will draw you into a world of fine wine and dramatic stories worthy of a Hollywood script.

- colleenn2350 contributionsA great way to taste & learnWe were a group of 8 friends on a perfect partly cloudy day. Matt is entertaining and fun. The best part for me is this a backpack of delicious tricks that he plays out along the walk. We tasted 3 wines at Groot Constantia and again at Buitenverwachting along with the harvest platter lunch which were delicious. I highly recommend this experience. 2 of us live in Cape Town and know the Constantia area & wines quite well but this gave us a different view and extra information which was great.Written 8 March 2024
- rbark0 contributionsDon't miss this tourMatthew is great - a real storyteller with a very deep knowledge of Constantia. A highlight of our trip! An amazing tour and loved learning about the rich, varied and diverse history of Constantia vineyards. Absolutely fascinating. Beautiful wines at three stunning vineyards. The luggage home is clinking!Written 20 February 2024
- AmandaSofia0 contributionsA fun way to discover the area and different winesA beautiful walk through the vineyards, coupled with interesting stories about the history of winemaking in the region. Picnic style lunch at the end topped off the experience. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for an entertaining way to discover new wines and the area!Written 11 February 2024
- Dave I0 contributionsOutstanding walk with top quality wine tasting sessions.A beautiful walk and Matt certainly made it very entertaining with his great knowledge of the Constantia history. He even provided excellent custard tarts with sparking wine. On top of that we had 2 superb wine tasting sessions. To finish off the enjoyable walk, a high quality picnic lunch was provided with more wine. Outstanding. What’s even better was Matt making the effort to write a transcript for us as we are deaf.Written 8 February 2024
- zacht9070 contributionsGreat morning out!Had a really awesome time on this walk. Learnt so much from Matt and all told in his interesting and entertaining way. The views are sensational and perfectly complemented by the wine and food stops. Will be back!Written 6 February 2024
- marjoleink4560 contributionsSipping, walking and story telling. It was so lovely to walk through the vineyards with Matt. Listening to all the interesting stories about Constantia. Tasting the wine at Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia and Buitenverwachting. Having a sipp of bubblies between the wine ranks. After all the stories the tastes different, better because you know their story. I highly recommend this story telling wine tour.Written 30 January 2024

- dylanbQ6767NB0 contributionsThe Best Wine Walk in the WinelandsYou will not find a more intriguing, well-curated and enjoyable wine tour in South Africa. Matt is a one-of-a-kind storyteller-guide and his experience as a professional writer is a great pairing with his worldy outlook (informed by 10-years of travelling the world). Not only do you get to taste one of the best wines in the world but you hear stories about constantia and the history of the development of the Cape and the winelands that you will not hear anywhere else. You can tell that these stories have been extensively researched. To top it all off, Matt infuses the whole journey with charm and spectacle as you take a gorgeous strole through some of the most beautiful vineyards in world. Thank you Matthew! We truly loved this tour.Written 21 January 2024
- callumwats0n0 contributionsan intrepid foray into the little known history of constantia wine! This was probably one of the best tourist experiences i have had in Cape Town and I have lived here for seven years. The tour was humorous, thought provoking and the storytelling was some of the best i have experienced. I would highly recommend this to anyone, be they local capetonians wanting to get a piece of some history they never knew or first time visitors to the Cape. The wine tasting was great as well of course. Couldnt recommend this highly enough. Bravo!Written 18 January 2024

We did this walk in the Constantia vineyards with Matthew and it was really nice. He does not tell you the dry facts about grapes and winemaking but is telling stories about the people behind. Walk is comfortable with nice views and delicious wine tastings. Absolutely to be recommended to do when in Cape Town!

Matt is a fantastic storyteller and really lets the walk and the tastings unfold at its own pace. Learning the history of the region was fascinating and gave us a new appreciation for Cape Town’s path to becoming a wine destination. The walk was easy, though wear shoes you don’t mind getting a little dirty as you are traveling through fields (& mud if it’s been raining). There was no push to buy wines which was appreciated although we did at one stop. We chose to do a tour in the Constantia region vs the better known Stollenbosch/Franhoek as it was closer to where we stayed in GreenPoint and didn’t require a full day as we had limited time.

Thanks for this wonderful and honest review! So glad you had a good time and that's a nice point about the ease compared to the deeper Winelands - Im going to use that!

Matt does a superb job of unlocking some of the secrets of the fascinating Constantia wine valley, all delivered with a humility and charm that is infectious and entertaining. This walk really was a delightful experience and a fascinating stroll back in time, learning wonderful insights and enjoying some delicious wines along the way too. Well worth joining Matt for a morning stroll...

What a fun, educational, and boozy walk! Matt really knows his wine and history and makes it all very entertaining. It's clear he enjoys sharing the juicy, tragic, and heroic exploits of the early Cape settlers as much as we all enjoyed listening. Highly recommended!

I've been coming to SA for almost 50 years when my first wine tasting was at Lanserac in 1976: a simple wine and cheese experience. How things have progressed and improved since then. This Wine Walking Tour & Tasting in Constantia is so well researched and thought out by Matt he has a tale to tell to suit every member of his audience. He has built such good relationships with the owners and operators of the three vineyards you visit that you could not feel more relaxed and welcome if you tried. Matt brought the history of the vineyards to life, making the wines taste even more delicious, ultimately complimented by a delicious food platter at Buitenverwachting.

The wine walk through Constantia Vineyards, led by storyteller Matt, offers a great experience of history and wine, all rolled into one. Matt, a raconteur of note, weaves the stories of strong women and fascinating ancestors who shaped the area's legacy, into the beautiful landscape of Constantia. A gentle walk, with frequent stops for wine tasting and snacks (finishing off with a delicious platter lunch at Buitenverwachting) makes for an awesome couple of hours in the winelands.
It's so much more than just a wine tasting or a walk; it's an immersive historical saga, where the legacy of adventurous, sometimes scandalous ancestors lingers even longer than the delicious wine. Thanks for a great day out!

To explore more deeply and widely a place I've known and loved all my life was a privilege - walking where the average tourist does not wander and enjoying untapped vistas of beauty. The highlight was our storyteller Matthew, who has deep knowledge of the history of the valley and an ability to tell it with wry humour and charm. Stopping at frequent intervals for a tipple was a pleasant novelty and the picnic lunch on the lawns at Buitenverwachting was outstanding.

We so enjoyed the Constantia Wine Walk with Matt Sterne. Matt weaves together stories and anecdotes of the people instrumental in creating the Constanta Valley. Wine is served at three great wine estates and, after you have walked up an appetite, you end off with a splendid picnic platter. What a fun day out! Highly recommended.
