    Book this now!!
The absolute best part of our trip to Cape Town, do not miss this!! We did the African food tour and I would not consider myself an “adventurous eater” and I LOVED every meal! So much so we went back to one of the restaurants later in our trip! Elsje was the absolute best, so informative and such a fantastic guide!

Fantastic tour, and great for people who have mobility limitations
My mom is pretty mobility limited and couldn't do the amount of walking the traditional tours do. When I contacted Cape Town Culinary Tours, they were super accommodating and came up with a great alternative - we could do a private tour and they would call an Uber in between the stops. It worked out perfectly! Elsje was super responsive through the whole process and led a fantastic tour. She's a great tour guide! Super knowledgeable about the history and culture that came together to create the distinctly Cape food scene. The places we went to were fantastic and really covered the gamut of different food cultures. Everything was high quality and everyone we met at the stops were fantastic. I can't recommend them highly enough, and if you have mobility limitations they are great to work with!

    AH-Mazing Food Tour…
If I could rate this tour 10 stars, I would do so without a second thought. My husband and I loved everything about it. Justin, our tour guide was spectacular! He was so full of information, which was readily shared with us. My husband Mark and I both discussed this as soon as the tour was over and the thing that stood out to both of us was the fact that Justin had no qualms about telling history the way it was. I mean, he really leaned in to what most would consider “tough conversations” to have across racial lines and we really felt good about how easy these conversations were for him. We truly appreciated it! I mean history is just what it is. We wish more people were like him and willing to have these discussions and not feel threatened or afraid. Next thing was the food and drinks! OMG, what can I say, Other than the places on this tour were absolutely the perfect spots to choose. We even stopped at a coffee shop along the way simply because I had a question about coffee but it was not a part of the tour. We spent a bit of time there discussing details and answering my questions. Mark and I absolutely loved our time spent with Justin and we definitely recommend this tour. You won’t be disappointed! Thanks, Justin!

Recommended way of appreciating the local food, cafes and people
I love food tours as they give good insights into local cuisine, foods, culture, history as well as opportunities to taste, eat and drink in local cafes, restaurants and bars. This tour was a very good one with Justin’s knowledge, enthusiasm and contacts adding to a good time for the three os us on this tour. The wine tasting test was an excellent way of finishing this tour.

Fascinating culinary, cultural and historical tour.
Fantastic culinary and history tour of Cape Town. Our knowledgeable and gregarious guide, Justin, took us to a Tanzanian restaurant, an Ethiopian restaurant, a coffee shop, and a gin mill, and introduced us to us to many delicious tastes of Africa , as well as filling us in on the very complex and fascinating history of South Africa, politically and socially. The tour formed an excellent base to guide our subsequent choices of restaurants, bars and coffee shops, as well as enhancing our appreciation of the history and culture of South Africa.: Boers . English colonialists, Zulu chiefs and ANC politicians and more Highly recommend

    Simply a MUST!
After having experienced the Cape Town Essentials tour with Justin, who was absolutely great and taught us so much about Cape Town’s history and local delicacies, we decided to hop on the Taste of Africa tour. This tour was completely different and very interesting. We learnt about Tanzanian food, and better, had a really good taste of it (delicious and so sweet!). We also shared Ethiopian food in a traditional way and explored its many different sides. Both in two completely different and really cool venues! Justin took us for a blind wine tasting of South African wines as well and we ended up tasting some very special gins in a hidden bar. When you are in Cape Town and if you are into food, make sure to hop on one of these tours as they are sooooo worth it!!!

Absolutely fantastic experience! Couldn’t recommend it any higher. We wouldn’t have known or looked out for any of the places Justin took us to if he wasn’t showing us around. Food was brilliant and his history knowledge was amazing. Highly recommend!

Great Food & Drinks Variety & Great Guide
Our family of 5 did the Cape Town Taste of Africa tour with Justin. The tour was excellent with a mixed range of African food & drinks. Justin was an excellent guide, with lot's of extra SA/Cape Town and food related history that really added to our experience.

    Knowledgeable and Delicious!
A tour by a true local who knows the city intimately, Justin was a treasure trove of information, teaching us so much about the history and influences behind some incredibly tasty dishes. We had a blast following him around as he showed us some of the most delicious and culturally significant dishes to grace Cape Town. Can't recommend enough!

    Not to be missed…
Wow! Truly an experience not to be missed. Justin did such a great job narrating and personalizing the tour so that our expectations were continuously exceeded at every stop. The perfect curation of independent restaurants, bakery, and wine shop rounded out our afternoon. Highly recommend starting your journey through South Africa with Cape Town Culinary tours as an introduction into the wonderful flavors and history. . It’s been almost a month and we are still talking about how great this tour was.

An excellent tour around parts of Cape Town we had previously not visited.
Justin, our guide, was excellent. If there was an app that covered everything in CT (geographical, political, edible, educational, drinkable, geopolitical, ecological, environmental sports, cultural) it should be called “Just Ask Justin” as he knows just about everything. We had a great tour of parts of CT that we had not seen previously despite many visits. Excellent F&B and things that we had not tried before. Thoroughly recommend.

We have done several food tours in different parts of the world. This has to be one of the best we have ever taken! Our guide,Justin, was knowledgeable, both about the food and drink and also the history of the city. We started off with excellent coffee and ended with a stunning cocktail. In between were copious amounts of food and drink with enough walking in between to aid digestion! Justin followed up the tour by sending us photos of the tour and also his grandma's bobotie recipe - very welcome now we have left the sunshine of South Africa for the chill of the British winter! Would very highly recommend this trip to anyone with an interest in food and the city.

The only regret was that we did this trip at the fag end of our 9 days trip of Cape Town. Right from the first stop, we experienced something different, unique and memorable. While we were already in love with the Cape Town coffee, the Siphon brew at the Origin Coffee Roasting was the perfect first stop. From thereon, it was a journey through the history, culture and evolution of the great city of Cape Town through its food and finally exotic cocktail at Cause Effect. Our tour guide Justin, packaged this tour more than just a culinary experience. We didn't feel rushed or overwhelmed with the number of places or the dishes. We are really glad that we chose this experience.

We have done a few food tours in other countries and loved them as you visit places you probably wouldn’t go to but sadly this one let us done. Being that Cape town offers you the opportunity to eat and drink at a great price in many wonderful restaurants we felt you could have done this tour on your own and saved a fortune. We spent £425 for 5 people for 4 hours max. We only had two drinks during the tour as our guide strangely refused more on our behalf and paid for the tour herself after each restaurant . Sadly we don’t have the guide that seems to be praised so much. Just don’t get why it cost so much for so little so please visit the wonderful little off beat restaurants yourself and save a fortune.

Greetings Kay Reed, Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review. Thank you for sharing your experience with us, although we are disappointed to hear that it fell short of your expectations. As a small business we are committed to providing memorable culinary experiences, we take all feedback seriously and will certainly reflect on your comments to improve our services. In 7 years this is the first review we have received on this matter. It’s disheartening to learn that you didn’t enjoy your time with us, especially considering the glowing reviews we’ve received over the years. Marianne, our guide, is indeed highly praised by many of our guests for her knowledge and passion for showcasing the culinary delights of Cape Town. Regarding the tour itself, we want to clarify that our aim is to offer a curated experience that introduces participants to a variety of local dishes and flavors. While we understand your disappointment with the number of drinks included, our focus is primarily on the food aspect of the tour rather than a drinking excursion. We apologize if there was any confusion in this regard. We visit 4 restaurants where guests get to try 8 different food items/dishes and 2 teas (non alcoholic) and 3 alcoholic drinks on tour all included to your ticket price per person. The tour leads up to a full lunch or dinner in total. Please see all the food and drink you had listed below. 1- BoKaap Deli - we started in the iconic blue Batavia building over some Koesisters (x2 for each guest) (traditional spiced doughnuts) and local Rooibos teas (x2 teas to be exact) 2- Marcos African Place on the border between Bo-Kaap and De Waterkant we were hosted by local legend Marco who served traditional Southern African dishes of Ostrich Fillet, Springbok Goulash, Chakalaka, and Umnq!usho (with the the click on the !). We also got to try a traditional Umnq!ombothi beer - Traditional African (alcoholic) Beer. 3- Cafe Charles a true gem, situated in the colourful De Waterkant. Here you were introduced to the aromatic Cape Malay Spices by their Bobotie, with a Apricot Chutney and Sambal. This was paired with an (alcoholic) glass of (CC) Bubbles, a Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc from Steenberg in the Constantia Wine Valley and some Bobotie spices to take home. 4- Firemans Arms Established in 1864 makes it the second oldest bar in South Africa, with a rich history in Cape Town. You enjoyed a draught of the Castle Lager (alcoholic) straight from the Tanks or an Inverroche Amber Gin (alcoholic) infused with coastal suurvy from the Fynbos Floral Kingdom. This was paired with a Bunny Chow, a syrupy Malva Pudding and local custard or ice cream to end on a sweet note! We do not host Booz crawls we host fun walking food tours in a safe and educational manner. As for the payment process, we would like to explain that our guides use a company card to cover expenses at each establishment and not their own. We appreciate your feedback, and we will strive to ensure that our guides are clear in their communication about the tour’s offerings and payment procedures moving forward. Once again, we apologize that your experience did not meet your expectations. We hope that you will consider giving us another chance in the future to showcase the best of Cape Town’s culinary scene. Wishing you many more delightful food adventures ahead. Foodie regards, Elsje Bester

Fantastic tour combining the history of Cape Town with how the different foods have been introduced and developed in the CIty. We learnt a lot about the city and the food and tasted so many yummy foods and drinks. We did a private tour as we had a toddler and a baby - our guide was amazing with us and the children. The places we visited were all friendly, well-organised, with delicious offerings. We went to many recommended food places around the city during our stay and I believe this tour did genuinely find the best example of each dish we tasted. We also received some good food tips after the tour from our guide. A really fun day.

We did the Cape Essentials tour and appreciated the diversity of the establishments we visited and the broad range of food that we sampled from springbok goulash to bobotie with apricot chutney to koesisters (traditional spiced doughnuts). Justin was an animated, knowledgeable guide providing information not only on the foods we were sampling but also the local culture, history and even local botany.
If you’re looking for a good introduction to South African cuisine we would highly recommend Cape Town Culinary Tours .

My wife and I decided to book this tour for our first day in Cape Town as a way to get acclimated to the city and learn some of its local cuisine history. We received every bit of what we expected and more.

Marianne was our tour guide and she did a masterful job of not only keeping every member of the group highly entertained, but she departed a great wealth of knowledge through out our time together. We were able to experience local, traditional and historical South African cuisine and explored Bo-Kaap and the surrounding areas. Not only was the food delectable, but the actual walking tour was extremely intriguing and was helpful in familiarizing ourselves with our new surroundings in Cape Town. Aside from the scheduled stops on the tour, Marianne also kindly pointed out multiple points of interest that she recommended we explore during our trip. While we did not visit them all, having the information was helpful and the ones we did visit, primarily on Bree street, were top tier.

On an administrative note, the vendor was highly communicative prior to our visit and checked for any allergies or dietary restrictions. We stayed in Camps Bay and were worried about transportation to the start of the tour and/or getting lost trying to find our way. However, clear instructions and the tour schedule were provided the tour operator clearly and well in advance of our visit (they also sent day before and of reminders which were helpful).

We whole heartedly recommend everyone who visits cape town to book this tour. Our review surly does no justice to the high quality snd hospitality of the tour and all of its team members who make it possible.

This tour, through Capetown Culinary Tours, is probably the best food tour we have taken (and we have been on many as they are our favourite way to introduce ourselves to a new place).

Justin was friendly and obliging, and the entire adventure was extremely well orchestrated. We were fortunate to be the only two on the tour that day, so it moved at our pace and we were able to benefit from Justin’s extensive knowledge.

The tour featured a great selection of food and drink samplings, with appropriate portions and timings. Justin discretely contacted each venue in advance so they were prepared for our arrival, which we felt was extremely respectful of our vacation time.

It was evident that considerable thought went into mapping out the day: it began with coffee and concluded with a cocktail, and the more substantial tastings were followed by longer walks. The serving sizes were perfect for this type of tour, as we never felt too full to appreciate each carefully considered offering.

We would highly recommend this tour.

This food tour was FANTASTIC! Our tour guides were Justin and Guillermo, both of whom had a deep knowledge of Cape Town's history and food scene – their input and friendliness really made the tour!

On the tour, we had the chance to try traditional South African dishes, visit a delicious Pan-African restaurant, try food from South Africa's Cape Malay culture, and have a delicious braai snack! Everything was paired with South African wine and beer as well!

I would definitely recommend this tour to those who want a traditional food tour accompanied by excellent history and cultural input. Just make sure to bring your walking shoes, as you get to walk around Cape Town's central area and get a great feel for the city!
