About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Pattarin L0 contributionsGreat day in the WinelandsI had a great time at the Winelands. My guide Mike was flexible and spontaneous - we went out on Sunday and not all places were opened, but we still hit many great places. At the end we hit 5 different vineyards. Since it’s a private tour there’s no itinerary. I did not pace myself with wine and food, and ended up forgot to have lunch. So I’d recommend to plan properly for lunch and explore wine and cheese pairings, or chocolate pairings.Written 11 September 2024
- U8394MJlouiseg0 contributionsA comprehensive whale watching experienceWe took my parents and family on the whale watching experience and it was better than expected. The staff were very caring and helpful to assist the elderly people and the young baby. The sightings were incredible and we saw dappled whale calves. The conservationist on board gave so much information while at sea which made the trip so immersive. At the end the company gave all some soup on land. This was definitely the best whale watching experience I have been on. Thanks again to the staff.Written 2 September 2024
- johndN9472LP0 contributionsFantastic First South Africa ExperienceThis tour started with a wonderful wine tasting at Du Toilskloof winery, then on to a scrumptious buffet lunch at Aquila reserve, followed by a fabulous three hour safari featuring some of Africa’s most magnificent wildlife. Our host and driver, Chris, kept us comfortable and well entertained with interesting facts and anecdotes throughout the journey. A great day indeed!Written 25 August 2024

- Carol W0 contributionsWonderful full day tourWe loved this full day tour. We had Mike as our guide and he even turned up with chocolates in hand in a very clean and comfortable car. He was a very knowledgeable tour guide, easy to understand and super friendly and accommodating to our needs. We didn't feel rushed at all. Mike's recommendations were also great and we enjoyed a lovely meal in Simon's Town. Would highly recommend this tour company and especially Mike as your tour guide.Written 22 February 2024
- babaDADA0 contributionsA great tour of the Aquila big 5 Park.Booking online was simple. Pick-up was on time. The trip was really interesting. It’s a 2 hour trip to the venue and Mike kept us going with his knowledge of the experience. He took through the procedures involved to get into the park and he deserves a special thanks. There was another couple on this trip who turned out to very amenable travelling partners. Overall an outstanding tour and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.Written 6 February 2024

- sarchakra0 contributionsEnjoyed our dayThis time round, when we visited Cape Town, we went to Aquila Game Reserve to do the Big Five. After the reservation via Viator, we received an email regarding payment of the game reserve fee, which was separate. The Viator payment was for the travel to and from the hotel to the Game Reserve, so you have to pay for the Safari separately (which is mentioned clearly in the fine print). Make sure to do that asap, as apparently Aquila gets full. We got a confirmation email of the payment, so the process was quite secure. On the day we were picked up at our hotel around 8.30 am by James. The drive to Aquila was about 2 ½ hours. Apart from us, there was another couple who James picked up from a nearby hotel. Neither of us was interested in any winery visit, so we drove directly to the Game Reserve and arrived around midday. We went straight to the buffet lunch. If you’re vegetarian, the food choices you have are slightly limited, so the husband ate very light! After lunch came the safari. Our guide James gave us some good advice to get to the bus early and made sure we were sitting at the front because I have motion sickness. I’m so glad I listened. The safari bus was packed to its full capacity as there were so many tourists. There were quite a few buses all packed as well as it was peak season. Our guide was very entertaining and enthusiastic. We saw springbok, baboons, rhinos, zebras, hippos, giraffe, elephants, eland, ostrich, buffaloes, to name a few. The lion looked very sleepy and bored, and the lionesses were just very sleepy, but we were very glad to see them at least. We were told there is very little possibility of seeing a leopard as they come out at dark. We were back in the early evening via the Huguenot tunnel. In terms of value for money it’s ok. Last time we were in Cape Town, we went to Bufflesdrift and Botlierskop, and I definitely enjoyed those reserves a lot better. We’ve lived in Nairobi before, so the whole safari experience was not a new thing for us, so I guess if this is your first safari experience it’s a good introduction. James was a great storyteller and knew a lot about the history of Cape Town and its vicinity. Cape Town is beautiful, and the drive through the mountains was amazing. PS. Remember to bring your ID as you will need to show that at the Aquila entrance. Remember to bring cash for gratuity, which is always welcomed. For a more private experience, I would suggest doing the private game drive like we’ve done before.Written 9 January 2024

- Fahad A0 contributionsDelivered as expected. 👍🏻👍🏻Four a day return trip. This tour certainly delivered as expected and even more. Pick up was on time, the car provided was new, specious and comfortable. Also, we have been lucky to have Mike with us as tour guide, he’s kind, experienced and never hesitated to answer questions and provided us with many enriching information along the road. I’d definitely recommend it as a short trip. But if you want to experience more of the wild animals I’d recommend to go to other natural reserves, more far away from cape town for sure.Written 9 December 2023

Long drive but Mike, our driver and guide, was very informative on the journey through the beautiful landscape. On reaching Aquila he was extremely helpful and attentive, then again on the return journey he took great care of us. A tiring day but well worth it.

My husband and I had such a great experience with Dave and Mike. First of all, we were picked up at our Airbnb with a Land Rover - how lovely is that? My husband and I were the only one in the passenger seats. We were given a very much “private tour”. It was also Mike’s birthday. Both gentlemen were so nice to us, gave us gifts, and we had a lovely drive to and from Aquila Game Reserve and Spa. The views in N1 road were just amazing. Both Dave and Mike made sure we were okay all the way. We arrived at Aquila a few minutes before lunchtime and we had lunch before the restaurant started to get too crowed. Also, we had time to take pictures around the Aquila and we got front seats in the bus for the game drive. We definitely got special attention and it was really nice. We took amazing pictures during the game drive as well. For a first time doing a safari, it was perfect.
If you ever in Cape Town and would like to book a guided tour, I will definitely recommend booking with this company. They are excellent at what they do.
My husband and I had such a great experience that we booked a winery tour guided with them. If you are into wine or would like to experience something different, book a winery tour with Mike. South African wine is really good. Customer service is on point. Mike is such a nice person and so knowledgeable. Mike took us to the best spots and I was really happy. I took so much pictures and shorts videos. Very memorable. First he picked us up in a Mercedes - Okay!!! Then he took us to the Brasserie for breakfast and it was so good. The cafe was very different in design, and the coffee/food were really good. Then we visited few wine estates and we had a nice lunch at one of the wine estate. Our tour was very lay back, which made it very enjoyable and we had great conversations as well.

Our recent trip to South Africa was made unforgettable thanks to Born in Africa Tours and our outstanding guide, Werner Klopper. Initially, we had only booked the Big Five Safari, but Werner's remarkable dedication and passion for his job prompted us to extend our tour to the Peninsula with him the very next day.
From the get-go, Werner impressed us with his attention to detail and genuine care for our experience. He ensured that we were properly registered for the safari and secured great seats on the bus. Despite the cold and rainy weather, Werner went above and beyond to keep us comfortable. He provided ponchos to protect us from the rain and even gave my wife his own jacket when it became too chilly.
Werner's thoughtfulness extended beyond just the safari. He surprised us by purchasing two umbrellas and gave them to us for the day, ensuring we were well-prepared for the weather.
Werner’s enthusiasm and commitment to his role as a tour guide were evident throughout our time with him. His efforts made a significant difference in our enjoyment of the trip. If you’re planning a tour in South Africa, I highly recommend choosing Born in Africa Tours and, if possible, requesting Werner as your guide. He truly made our South African adventure exceptional.

Mike, our driver, was early, accommodating, and patient. He went out of his way to share local history, economy, stories and opportunities. We got to stop at a winery in addition to our itinerary and he was outstanding in the attention to detail. We had such a great time we have booked an additional tour for our last day of holiday. I highly recommend Big Five Safari and will definitely seek to book with them when we return.

The winter weather in Cape Town is very unpredictable. It was thus not a surprise that we had to postpone our trip from a Monday to a Thursday. What is worth mentioning is the open communication we had with our tour operator, Born in Africa, in particular Dave. Right from our booking in Singapore, he made us feel welcome, cared and certainly genuine in ensuring that we would get the best Safari experience. True enough when we met Thursday morning, he more than met our expectations of a guide - he even personally picked us up from our hotel and sent us to the Safari. The two-hour car journey was amazing. He and his guide came across as long lost friends and they answered all our queries on South Africa, its culture, past and people. For sure, we enjoyed the car ride - to and from the Safari. They demonstrated South African hospitality! We felt safe and taken care of very well by them.

The guide was very nice and helpful during the whole trip. He gave us very good tips before proceeding with the safari. However, to be highlighted that this tour is ONLY transport from your hotel to the safari. I saw cheaper tour for this service. However, i chosen them for their stops. To my surprise the guide was not aware of any stops (only 1 stop done for the view). When i show him the details of the pacakge he them did a stop (wine tasting which is additional cost) when we came back from the safari. I believe this is not professional. They should respect their itinerary without me reminding them of what they charge me in the package.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review.
We do take customer complaints seriously and apologise if your experience was not up to your expectations.
I think in this instance, however, there was a miscommunication between yourselves and our guide. The problem started with a late pickup from your hotel (not our fault). In order to get to the game reserve on time, our guide chose to do the wine stop after the game drive instead of on the way there as per our itinerary and did not actually need to be reminded.

You’re just paying (in my case about £200) for the transfer to and from the reserve - as are the other 5 or 6 passengers in the mini bus. It is made clear that the reserve fees are payable separately so I’ve no issue with that, but when you compare what you get with other day trips for a third of the cost, frankly I’d give this a miss. As for the safari experience, we saw some giraffes, elephants, rhinos, springboks and hippos- unfortunately the lions didn’t turn up but that can’t be helped. The tour guide was very good.

Unfortunately solo travellers do usually pay a premium price. The cost per person is less when more people book - economies of scale. But glad to hear that other than that you still enjoyed the day.

We didn’t have time in our schedule for a full Safari so opted for this one.
We were picked up in a very comfortable & fully air conditioned car which made the 2 hour journey to the safari park fly by. The driver Chris was very knowledgeable & informative, he told us loads of things about the area as we passed through.
Upon arrival at Aquila game reserve we were treated to a glass of bubbly & a wonderful buffet lunch before embarking upon our Safari trip. On the trip itself (around 2.5 hours) we saw Elands, Ostriches, Springboks, Gnus & other animals from a distance but near enough to take photos. We were however, very lucky to get really close to the Hippos, Giraffes, Rhinos & Elephants. The highlight was getting within touching distance of the lions, who were thankfully sleepy & appeared non plussed by our presence. The only animal we didn’t see was the nocturnal leopard.
All In all a great day, although a little expensive. Another highlight on our trip to South Africa

We have been to Safari before but this one was much better. We were able to see 4 of the Big 5 and from a very close distance. Most importantly our tour guide Mr Werner who picked us up from our hotel in Cape Town, I think he made this whole day truly memorable. He went above and beyond to make us comfortable, stopped us at the amazing farm shop were we had amazing grapes from the farm and recommended to buy Guwava which we did and it turned out to be phenomenal. He was very knowledgeable, very patient and we felt like we've known him for years.
When we arrived in the Safari, the weather was cold and windy and he did his best to find us blankets or something we could get from the gift shop.
I can't recommend this tour enough as we really had a great trip. Thank you Born in Africa and special thank you to Mr Werner 🙏🏼

This is a very good opportunity to see the big 5 within a single day trip from Cape Town. The ride to the Aquilla game reserve was great with many variations in landscape and my guide Mike gave me a lot of information and pleasantly answered all the questions I had for him. The game reserve was very nice and we had close ups with animals. We were not able to see leopards, which I think makes sense given the animal's behavior.
