- kriekian0 contributionsAn informative excursion with the opportunity to get up close to unique marine wildlifeThanks to the Marine Dynamics Team for an incredible experience. The tour was well organized and we had the opportunity to encounter a close up sightings of a mother humpback whale and her calf which was really special.Written 25 September 2024
- theGeo0 contributionsA long way from Cape Town for 30 minutes with whalesSeeing both humpback and southern right whales and their calves was amazing. The skipper, crew and volunteers put us on numerous whales and were respectful of them by keeping a distance. One curious brindle humpback juvenile swam right under our ship. Fantastic! I was disappointed in seeing another boat chum for sharks. This is not a good thing to disrupt their natural behavior for the benefit of a few people in cages. Also surprised that there was an upcharge for transportation to Hermanus when I understood that this was included. Plus we were gathered at 7:00 am and drove for three hours including an hour picking up others around Cape Town. Driver was excellent and stopped at some nice bakeries half way for a comfort break and coffee. So just be aware that the fee may not include all transportation and the round trip from Cape Town is over 6 hours for 30 minutes with the whales.Written 25 September 2024
- scrabbler20150 contributionsGreat tripWe were unsure whether the trip would go ahead due to strong winds but fortunately it did. Rest assured that safety is a priority from this professional team who looked after us every step of the way. The tour had been booked by our travel agent and we were surprised to be offered coffee and muffins on arrival. There was a short talk about penguin conservation and a video safety briefing. Everyone was provided with a life jacket. Additionally there was a waterproof coat which proved to be very useful. The sea was very choppy at times but staff checked that we were OK. Unfortunately, We could not get very close to the island where the penguins and birds were but did have great sighting of the seals. What you see is down to nature on the day. We did not see any dolphins but the highlight was the whales of which we had great views. We were impressed that the team made sure that everyone on board had the opportunity to view the wildlife. Seeing sharks was also great but a little "manufactured" as people were on other boats to experience being in cages in water with the sharks. After the trip we had vegetable soup and a bread roll which was very welcome after a cold and blustery trip. The organisation was first rate and we would highly recommend this tour. Afterwards we drove to the penguin and seabird sanctuary which was free. We found this to be disappointing as all one could see was a few penguins behind glass.Written 9 September 2024
- 2014petert0 contributions12 out of 10, fully deservedExtremely professional crew, who created a fantastic experience. It starts with coffee and muffins for briefing, and ends with a hot soup for the debriefing. And with this attitude of care, the boat trip unfolds. Plenty of crew members are onboard, constantly checking if everyone is ok, asking people for their questions, obviously explaining the sightings. Definitely to repeat and recommend.Written 5 September 2024

- shropslady0 contributionsFabulous experienceExcellent experience - great pick and drop off. The sea safari is incredibly well organised, from the safety briefing to the crew on board ensuring everything goes well. The boat feels safe as the crew are so knowledgeable. - h2odoc7810 contributionsVery attentive crew!!First off, it was a beautiful day for being winter. The water had calmed down substantially and we set off! There were still some swells and one of us got a bit queasy, even after dramamine. The crew was right on it and offered peppermint and ginger and soon were feeling much better! Kudos to the crew for their attentiveness!! Pickup at our hotel was perfect. We headed out in search of ocean critters and found Humpbacks, sharks, seals, penguins, and many birds. It was a great time, supported a good cause, and would recommend to anyone!!Written 28 June 2024
- Guide458009975330 contributionsAmazing experience. What a fantastic adventure, we really had a great day with Dyer Island Cruises, we did the Marine Big 5, spotted Marine birds, the bridel whale, dolphins, seals, we even saw a corper shark, after the trip we stopped by the penguin sanctuary. I would highly recommend this 5 star experience to anyone from South Africa as well as International Tourists. Really professional company, professional and super friendly staff, you can tell that they all love what they doing. Shout out to Janine, she was very helpful and took her time to show us around, she is one amazing Lady. - Quayline0 contributionsShark Cage Dive - a great experience! We had a really great day with Dyer Island doing their Shark Cage dive. It was well organised and we were fully briefed on the conservation work by a qualified and interesting Marine Biologist. We each spent about 30 minutes in the cage with several large Copper Sharks to provide continuous ‘entertainment’. After that we watched from the top deck for about an hour. Perfect photo opportunities. Very warm wetsuits and plenty of skilled crew to help. Delicious snacks too. A very worthy cause to support and what fun we had. We are pretty comfortable in the water but maybe worth saying we are well into our 70s so don’t think you can’t do this. It felt very safe. It felt 100% safe Delicious homemade soup and bread in their fabulous restaurant afterwards. Thank you. We think you are doing a fantastic job.Written 31 March 2024
- Mirzelf0 contributionsMarine safari HermanusIt was a beautiful day, nice weather. The waves weren't that shaky ;-) Dolphins came past the boat, penguins were swimming nicely. The seals were enjoying themselves on their rocks. Although the whale season was already over, we were still very very lucky to spot some whales. Last but not least we saw how the sharks were fed, which are very impressive animals.Written 14 March 2024
- Meander508487834740 contributionsSpectacular viewsThe crew did great in teaching us about the marine big 5 and the views were magnificent. Didn’t get to see the whale but will have to some back when they are in seasonWritten 17 December 2023
- jayno6660 contributionsA very worthwhile experience - good value for money and highly recommended.A fantastic boat trip. We were fortunate to see four of the big five, and thought the service and attentiveness of all the crew members was outstanding. We appreciated the commentary from the marine biologist who was a mine of interesting information. A particular highlight was the 20 minutes we spent with a mother and calf Southern Right whale, who put on a great performance, getting up close to the boat on a number of occasions. The seal colony off Dyer Island didn't disappoint either! We felt very safe as it's clear that the company takes safety very seriously, and ensured we were fully briefed before the trip, as well as provided with life jackets and optional water proof jackets. There was also storage on the boat for our personal belongings, to ensure they didn't get wet or slip overboard. The coffee and muffin before the trip, as well as the soup and freshly backed breadroll at the end of the trip, were both very nice touches, which helped stave off the hunger after an early start. All in all a very worthwhile experience which we'd highly recommend.Written 28 November 2023

The tour was good, but I was not expecting a 3-hour drive each way. Our driver Riaan was excellent, thoughtful, and informative, and although the drive is very scenic, the additional 6 hours made the trip less appealing. When I booked a 9:00 am tour, I didn't expect a 6:00 am pickup.
The staff at Dyer Island Cruises is kind, professional, and knowledgeable. Our marine biologist on board the ship, Alina, was excellent. She answered everyone's questions, in addition to providing wonderful information from the moment she met us. We only saw 2 of the big 5, but that is understandable because we are seeing them in nature. Viewing humpback whales in person was a treat enough! They are majestic.
All in all, if you have the time, it is a great trip.

We were extremely fortunate to have great winter weather and sightings the day we went - a breaching humpback whale, a couple brydes whales and multiple southern right whales including a mama & baby. Saw dolphins, seals and penguins as well. Onboard staff was great at sharing information, allowing for photography by all and taking care of the couple of folks who suffered a bit of seasickness. The boat is very accommodating and the provided ponchos were welcome when the boat was moving and/or you weren’t in the sun. While we did see sharks, I was a little disappointed that they were seen only in the context of being baited for a nearby shark cage boat. I expected a little more given Marine Dynamics conservation mission and the proclamation on the website that we would be visiting the “Shark Alley famous for great white shark sightings”. On board biologists confirmed there actually haven’t been great white shark sightings in nearly a decade there so that felt a little misleading. Additionally it would be helpful if the website were clearer on how long this tour takes. From being picked up around 6am from your Cape Town hotel, to the safety briefing and coffee, to the time on the water itself plus the lunch after, mandatory visit to the penguin sanctuary and the return to Cape Town, this is an 11 hour day - we got back at 5p. So don’t make the mistake of planning something afterwards like we did. I will say though that the driver was exceptionally accommodating in dropping people off at their desired locations, even if it wasn’t where they were picked up. So overall an enjoyable experience that could be improved with some updates to the website information.

Prompt and efficient Cape Town return service.
Courteous staff at reception. Limited space at the briefing, needs to be expanded. The bun and soup were distasteful; should have been something tastier and enjoyable.
The boat trip was enjoyable. However we properly spotted only a couple of Southern Right Whales who did not completely emerge from the waters. We didn’t sight any dolphins or great whites, just some ordinary small sharks. The seals and the penguins on the two respective islands were nice to watch from a distance.
Overall just a nice outing into the sea.

We really recommend this experience; it was the first excursion we did here in South Africa and the interaction/viewing of the marine wildlife was fantastic. We got to see seals and whales up close like never before which was a magical experience!
Just note it is a VERY early wake up from Cape Town, we were picked up at 4:30am.

We got to see all of the Big five. We saw multiple mama whales with their babies and several dolphin. We visited an island with 60,000 seals and then another island that is dedicated to rescuing penguins. The boat we were on brought back 48 neglected or injured baby penguins to go to the sanctuary. It was an amazing day with wonderful staff and absolutely unforgettable memory. The pickup and delivery from our holiday residence in Llandudno was exceptionally good too. I certainly rate these guys five stars. We sponsored a penguin home on the island out of gratitude for the wonderful visit.

Thank you for the 5-star review!
Seeing multiple pairs of whales and their babies is a sight for anyone! It is also wonderful that your tour included sightings of dolphins. Not many people experience the transport of endangered African penguins to the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary. Very exciting.
Thank you for complimenting our staff and your experience with transport.
It is great to hear you bought property on Dyer Island to house the endangered African penguin! The penguin houses truly make a difference in the livelihood of these penguins and their chicks.
Thank you for your support!!

This was an amazing experience. Though we had a really early start the day did not disappoint. We saw whales, bronze sharks, seals & penguins. We also had a trip to the penguin sanctuary which was informative. I would recommend this trip but just note not all animal sightings are guaranteed. The dolphins were not around this time of year but the other sightings made up for it.

My husband and I went on a Marine Big 5 tour in May, and I highly recommend this operator. Marine biologists onboard and the crew are extremely knowledgeable, and the fact that profits go into maintaining the research efforts and conservation, made the experience extra special. Keep in mind, that while the crew does the absolute most to spot the animals, whales/ dolphins are not guaranteed and it really depends on the day how much or how little you'd see. I'd say that seeing the Seal island alone was 100% worth the trip, if you've never seen a seal colony you'd be impressed. We got lucky and had a whale sighting even though we went a little bit off season. It is about 2-2,5h drive from Cape town, however, it's pretty scenic so it didn't feel daunting. Overall, it was a great trip!

Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear that you and your husband had a fantastic time on our Marine Big 5 tour. Our team of marine biologists and crew work hard to make each trip special, and it's great to know that our conservation efforts added to your experience.
We appreciate your understanding that wildlife sightings can vary, and we're glad you found the seals at the island impressive and were lucky to spot a whale off-season! The scenic drive from Cape Town is indeed a beautiful bonus.

It’s an early start to the day but worth it for a really enjoyable experience on the water. It’s about a 90 min drive from Cape Town (they pick you up and drop you off of course). The crew on board is fantastic. Kelly, our marine biologist, was amazing - kind, patient, and knowledgeable, answering all of our questions. The rest of the crew works hard to spot animals and keep you as dry and comfortable as possible. Towels are handed out freely to protect you and your camera. We saw about 5 pairs of moms and their calves, one common shark, and tons of seals. Penguins were visible from a distance and up close from the rehabilitation center that is included as part of the tour. Coffee and muffins provided for breakfast, soup and bread for lunch after. You spend about two hours on the water.

The group tour was very well organised. I was picked up early in the morning and brought back to my accommodation. Before we're boarded the boat, we received enough information about what to expect as well as the conservation work that the Dyer Island Conservation is doing. Throughout the boat trip, a biologist enlightened us about the whales, sharks, penguins and seals. Due to bad weather, we couldn't stay long enough in the sea to see dolphins. But that's understandable. They provided a small breakfast, muffins and tea, and after the windy boat trip we got a much appreciated hot soup and tea. All in all I could recommend this tour. They really paid attention to details to our satisfaction.

We’re thrilled to hear you enjoyed your well-organized tour and appreciated the informative session about our conservation work before boarding. It’s wonderful that you found the biologist’s insights on the marine life engaging. We’re sorry the weather didn’t allow for dolphin sightings, but we're glad you understood. Your kind words about the breakfast, muffins, and the much-needed hot soup post-trip warm our hearts. We had a great time out on the boat and saw several whales with calves, seals and penguins. We got up close to their sister boat where people were doing cage shark watching. Not one for me but very interesting to watch. Well organised and very friendly team in the on site building as well as the girls on the boat. The drive down from Cape Town was longer than we had realised it would be so a big thanks to the driver who got us there in time in traffic and then had to drive all the way back. Much appreciated
