Absolutely MUST DO

My favorite part was honestly the tour guide. Mukhtar was absolutely amazing. Very professional. Polite. And very informative. We learned more about Cape Town than ever before. Definitely will come back again

It was cancelled several days ahead. Be careful of Viator, they take your money early and refuse to refund it. I believe them to be incompetent in the extreme or worse.

Not as advertised
Our African eagle tour got off to a poor start when the driver was 25 minutes late picking us up.

The attached photo explains what is contained in a half day wine tour, I have included both photos of the leaflet and website we looked at prior to booking (screen shot of website 30/9/19).

The stellenbosch orientation was a drive though with no opportunity to get out and take photos There was no Dorp street, De braak or "free walk about historic town".

The wine tasting was fine but not quite the experience we had expected. Employees from the estates would pour a wine explaining the name and age but there was no guidance as to how to taste the wine, smelling etc. Luckily another couple had been wine tasting before so they showed us what you should do but it did not feel much different from drinking wine in a restaurant as you were just left to get on with the tasting.

The biggest dissapointment for us was that we went to paarl rather than the tram ride with wine tasting. As this was not how it was advertised on the leaflet or on the website it left us feeling disappointed and unsatisfied with the tour.

Birthday Celebration
An awesome day for wine tasting. We were hungry and concerned about partaking without eating. Our tour guide was very accommodating. He arranged for us to purchase lunch at the first winery. The staff at both vineyards were awesome and generous with the wine. The surrounding fields are simply beautiful. Half a day was sufficient for us....

Great experience
Apr 2019 • Couples
Never done a wine tasting before and dint know what to expect!

From getting in to the African Eagle minibus, with 'Brummy' driver, he made us feel at home and explained the layout of the visit. He used his hands free microphone system to keep us informed and involved.

On the way we called in to village and had short walk around to explore, Stellenbosch, the guide explained about the trees growing through roofs etc. The trees were there first and to comply with the laws the builders needed to build around the trunks and branches!

He then took us to an antiquated shop, Oom Samie Se Winkel, Stellenbosch, which sold everything from ancient exotic goods to modern items, trading for more than 100 years! An amazing place, well worth a visit.

We then spent an hour or so at the wine lands tasting a few of the different wines on offer. The winelands guide explained the differences and what was on offer. We then tasted some of the local wines and were given the opportunity to make some purchases if we wished, no pressure whatsoever.

Highly recommended.

Disappointed!!
Apr 2019 • Friends
We were picked up from the hotel, by Francois for an afternoon half day tour. He then went to the wrong hotel to pick other people up and after that he picked up 3 others who he seemed to focus his attention on. The tour above is not the tour we experienced. We went to the first wine tasting session. No explanations about the wine only answers to questions. We did not make the next wine tasting as the venue was closed - 'Rickety Bridge'. In fact we did hear they did not know we were coming. Quick drive around Stellenbosch then on to the Victor Verster prison where Nelson Mandela did his walk to freedom. Whilst we admire Nelson Mandela, this was not on our itinerary but our guide included this especially for the 3 who had special attention. It was dark when we got there and by this time we were very bored. We did NOT complete the survey as we were too annoyed. Would not recommend this driver. We did also find him racist. I would not recommend. Hopefully, Viator, who we use to book tours with will not use them again!!

Lovely wines
We did a half day wine tasting trip with Ilios Travel. Our guide was Shadley and he was very knowledgeable about the area. He took us to 2 very different vineyards. The first was a small family run estate called Anura (means frog) with fabulous wines. The other was Graf which was much bigger and flashy but still great wines.

Good activities, not well run
Dec 2018 • Friends
The winery visits and the wine tasting themselves were good.

However, the tour was quite unstructured and poorly planned, leading to a 6.5h “half day” tour to sip 9 wines at 2 locations.

1) It took us 1.5h to pick all the tour participants up because of menial logistical issues (not having the right addresses, not having folks’ phone numbers)

2) Our van had a flat tire. It happens, but the solution wasn’t well communicated, we didn’t know how it’d affect the tour.

3) We spent a lot of time at each place; no direction was given so the large group would disperse and take time to regather.

4) The drive through Stellenbosch wasn’t very interesting.

Racist Guide
What would have been a wonderful tour of two very different but lovely vineyards was ruined by Robert, our guide. We had already completed the review cards and thus my sentiments were not reflected there. First he referred to an upcoming parade as a "coon" parade because it historically occurred when the slaves got the day off and were free to participate. Secondly, he said the stadium was failing financially because only blacks are into soccer and the more educated rugby players had their own stadium.
I was stunned and dismayed that such sentiments were still held and boldly voiced in a country as fractured and broken by racism. I had hoped they were further along in their reconciliation efforts. This incident ruined my visit to the cape.
