Vince and Michel did a great job guiding us through the city. We covered a lot of ground and learned a lot of Cape Town and South Africa's history. The bikes were in great condition.

Fantastic cycling tour in beautiful Cape Town
This cycle tour is most definitely worth going on. Our tour guide Pedro was excellent and very knowledgeable as he guided us all around areas of Cape Town we probably wouldn't have known to visit. We all felt very safe with Pedro and had a lovely treat when we visited the beautiful coloured houses at Bo-Kaap and were presented with a lovely picnic of very tasty, home made Malay snacks from one of the residents. Would most definitely recommend this company and especially Pedro who was a pleasure to spend the afternoon with.

      Cycling along the Garden Route
AWOL suggested a very good itinerary for a bespoke 2 weeks cycling trip along the Garden Route from Cape Town, ending in Port Elizabeth. Our guide, Bradley, did an excellent job in the support car, giving us directions if needed; providing snacks and drinks; taking us and the bikes between the various stages; and telling us so much about this country. We rode some beautiful sections, eg to the Cape, in the winelands, round False Bay, to Cape Agulhas, up and over the Swartberg Pass, in Tsitikama National park and near Addo NP. AWOL put us in some great accommodation and we loved the food and drink everywhere (especially at cheap prices compared to the UK). We also did the AWOL city tour of Cape Town, which was good fun; and the township tour of Masiphumelele, which was very enjoyable and stimulating.

Great bike tour, excellent intro to city
Fantastic bike tour around some of the main attractions of Cape Town. I am not a biker normally, so we went with the e-bike upgrade (worth it for me, but it's not necessary if you normally bike since the route is pretty gentle). Shaun (Shawn ?) was our guide and was amazing - very open to all of our questions, knowledgeable about the city and historical matters, great anecdotes and stories, and a good resource for future things to do in the city.

      Cape Point Magic!
We had a day full of incredible experiences. Andy, our excellent guide, brought us to the ocean kayaking with the penguins, then we walked to the viewing area for closer looks. Next he took us to the Cape Point Lighthouse, where the views were stunning! Then we cycled for about an hour around the area. It was an awesome day! The time flew by!

      Fantastic tour, highly recommended!
I had a wonderful tour of Cape Town with Vincent. He was very engaging and knowledgeable about the history and current events of Cape Town and South Africa. We covered a lot of ground in 3 hours and even had a chance to take a break with delicious local food and tea. I highly recommend this tour!

Birding with AWOL tours - highly recommended for both experienced and novice birders
I was privileged to experience a birding tour in the West coast national park with AWOL tour guide David Walker. Dave not only found so many different bird species for me in spite of adverse weather, but also shared his passion, knowledge and birding experiences. He treated me too with a delicious lunch served with Cape wine. Dave has inspired me to venture further afield in learning about birds - a most rewarding hobby.

      A great and unique experience!!!
We just want to say THANK YOU! Our little private walking tour with Michel and Sophie was absolutely fantastic! We had so much fun together, the passion and enthusiasm for the Mother City was just infectious. They took us to hidden gems, gave us an understanding of the people here as well as great recommendations for the rest of our days in Cape Town. We had a great and unique time together. A clear recommendation for anyone visiting Cape Town!

      private tour in Franschhoek.
We asked for an electric bicycle tour for a whole day. The guide arrived with 2 electric bikes, for my husband and me, and a normal bike for him. The guide couldn't follow. So we stopped after an hour and did some wine tasting. We paid for this 9.200 R !

Positive and enjoyable bike tour experience
We had the best time during our cycling tour through Cape Town. Lucas was our guide, and he made it so enjoyable! He gave us insightful information about Cape Town's history and many fun facts about the city as well. We would happily do the tour again; it was a highlight of our trip, and we would definitely recommend it to anyone who is considering it.

I felt that in order to get a better insight into Cape Town we should visit one of the townships where the vast majority of its citizens return at the end of each day. My main concern was that we would be perceived as being voyeuristic and those living in the township would resent our presence. I have no doubt that some did but I do not believe this was the case for the majority.
The first step for us was to find a company that itself engaged with the local community and was respectful in its approach and AWOL met these criteria. My understanding is that the township we visited encouraged tours (not all do) believing it is important for those who live outside the townships (whether locals or tourists) to gain a better understanding of life within them.
Our tour was certainly informative - we learnt about the history, the different types of housing, the neighborhoods within, the schools and clinics etc as well as the hardships.
However for me the revelation was seeing the township from within rather than from the road that we had just driven along previously. From the the road you see only the corrugated iron cladding creating an impression of an uninviting (and possibly slightly scary) place. However from within you see the small shops, busy cafes and nail bars which prove that, despite the challenges, enterprise and community spirit find a way of prevailing.

Thanks so much for taking the time out to share your positive experience of visiting Masiphumelele Township on an AWOL cycling tour. We so pleased to share an otherwise neglected part of our beautiful country in a meaningful and insightful way. By visiting the community you supported the most vulnerable residents who otherwise would have limited opportunities to engage in meaningful employment and the residents appreciate that visitors take a geniune interest in their livelihoods.

Thank you for the nice cycling tour in Cape Town. My tour guide Melanie showed me a lot of nice places and I learned a lot about the culture. It was the exact right amount of facts, nice stories and good views to remember. I was doing the tour alone and it was nice that my tour guide took pictures and send them to me afterwards. This way I could focus on the facts and did not have to deal a lot with pictures at all. I think the tour is also good for families. To have a German speaking guide helped to just relax a little, like a little break from the rest of the day. I booked this tour 3 years ago and because of COVID I had to postpone it. The office was really nice and they were extremely friendly. I can only recommend doing this bike tour, especially for the first two days. You get the perfect overview. You know exactly where you can walk around and where you should be a little more careful. You find nice places to which you want to come back and you get recommendations where locals eat.

This was a beautifully run tour. Thanks to a wonderful guide Lutho.. He was informative, funny and good to be around. We felt completely safe.. And it was just right to see the space from a bicycle.. The pace was just right and enabled us to make eye contact with people and greet those around us. We loved our visit to the creche and the craft centre and the food was good. Its a fully immersive experience.. Which gives a more complete understanding of life in South Africa without being overwhelming. We thoroughly enjoyed it!

The guide Shaun is living in the township and is a nice and smart young men. He is involved in imported projects to develop children and residents for his township. The library was really great to see. Because Shaun is one of the residents, he is able to present the township. He is very proud to show daily live shared a lot of information and we have had a local lunch. Our son, almost 13 years old, played together with the local boys a football match. That was a great experience. Shaun stimulated and organised the game. Many Thanks Shaun!

Had a wonderful tour around the township of Masiphumelele. Our guide, Lutho, is a local resident and knew exactly where to take us. We started at the Masicorp headquarters, where they offer many sewing and computer classes. The tour starts at the AWOL bike facility. From there we went past the taxi rank and into library. It was amazing to see the community work together. Lutho tells us about all the amazing programmes that the township offers everyone to get involved. Throughout this trip I always felt safe. Especially when you talk to the locals they are always friendly and inviting.

I highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting a full township experience.

Forget about everything you think you know about townships and the cliches you saw on TV
Instead, you will meet warm and welcoming people and discover the daily life of the community as if you were part of it. I was inspired by their courage when I understood how they organize school, library, social aid etc. despite the obvious lack of resources. The cycling experience is great to move around the different parts of that big village
Our guides grew up in this area and have a lot of stories to share. The walk with them inside the maze of the unformal settlement and passing by in front of people's houses greeting at you was really fun

Important to note that I never felt awkward and never felt like we are doing a safari to see misery
This is a truly moving and mind blowing human experience that I consider a must-do to anybody coming to Cape Town

I absolutely loved this tour! My guide was Lutho, he was really knowledgeable and generous with his time. He taught me a lot about the local customs and culture, he even taught me some Xhosa. The area is really interesting, it’s a great way to see how people live in Cape Town and work together as a community. We visited a local kindergarten, a shop, the library and had an incredible lunch. If you’re in Cape Town this is a must do experience!
I was on my own and felt completely safe!

We had quite an intense 4 hours in the township of Masiphumelele. Our tourguide was absolutely fantastic and professional answering all sort of questions and giving us all kinds of information in detail.
The tour was impressive on many levels and the best parts were a visit to the local kindergarden and a meal at a resindent's home.
If you want to book this tour and are ineterested in making a donation I recommend to send a short e-mail to ask what they might need. I really regretted not having asked first. At the time the kindergarden would have definitely needed some toys and probably other donations as well.
