      A truly customized day!
Mark is a great tour guide! It's so wonderful to have a private guide who's flexible and who notes what your passions are so they can customize your day. That's exactly how it was with Mark! We were on track to do all the standard Cape Peninsula activities until he recognized our sense of adventure and desire to avoid crowds. He then steered us to much more personally interesting hikes and activities. Thanks, Mark, for a great day on the Peninsula!

      Amazing Experience
We did a multi-day hike with Justin over 3 days, starting at Cape Point and finishing at the Table Mountain cable station. We had a fantastic time and really enjoyed the hiking. The scenery was stunning, and it was a pleasure to spend a few days learning about the environment and landscape from Justin - who has what can only be described as encyclopaedic knowledge of the Cape’s flora and fauna. Remember to wear sun screen! The sun is unforgiving and the routes we took were very exposed during the first two days. Shout-out to Lindsay too for being super friendly and always being ready with a cold drink for us at the end of the day!

I hired Mark to take me to some birding spots around Cape Town to do some photography. His knowledge was outstanding and understood well what I was after. I felt he would have gone to any lengths to make my day successful. It was a great day...

Wonderful nature centric tailor made private tours at great prices
Did two day tours with Mark - no trekking as fitness not up to it at the moment! Had a lovely time, it's wonderful to be taken around beautiful Cape Town with a local who is passionate about their city. We covered so much including all the must sees! However as a marine biologist it was also great to be with a fellow conservationist who could tell me all about all the flora and fauna and not just the usual bog standard tour blurb (he did cover all that too though if that's what you want!) And as a solo traveller it's brilliant to find someone willing to take you on a private, custom made tour at a reasonable price. Thanks to Mark for putting up with me and to Lindsay for organising everything.

      Absolutely fantastic!
We did a hike with Mark on what started off as a miserable rainy day. Mark was very knowledgeable and was able to personalise the hike for the weather and our slower pace. We went up Platteklip Gorge to start with and then peeled off to do the Contour path trail. Mark talked to us throughout and gave us lots of detail on the flora and fauna, the rocks and the history of the mountain. It was the best day we've had in Cape Town so far and are very grateful to have had Mark as a guide. We would love to come back and do the Orange Kloof trail with him.

Best Birding and Nature Guide in Cape Town
As an avid birder, I have traveled the world and have had many guides. Mark Hawthorne owner of the family-run Table Mountain Treks and Tours is one of the best. He has over 40 years of cultural, natural history, and avian guiding experience. We traveled the region with him and to say we were impressed would be an understatement. He worked so hard to give us a sunrise-to-sunset enriching experience every day. Mark is a teacher, and conservationist and is highly praised and holds many awards and honors for his years of service to the conservation work in and around the Cape.

      A family business worth visiting.
Fantastic multi-day hike with these amazing knowledgeable and patient guides. Mark and Justin were super professional and I learnt so much from both of them. Fynbos Cape floral kingdom rocks (!) and I will ever have a special place in my heart for this fantastic nature. And the whole experience made perfectly seamless by Lindsay. A family business worth visiting.

      Knowledgeable & Friendly Guide
It was great to have Mark Hawthorne pick us up in a nice SUV and take us to Aquila Private Game reserve. He was well versed in the Fauna and South Africa in general and made it very interesting., He is dependable and very knowledgeable. We then had a great experience at the Boschandal Winery too.

      Silvermine Fynbos Hike
My wife and I did a day hike in Silvermine Nature Reserve. Justin led the trek and we learned about this opportunity via AirBnB experiences. We had been in Silvermine on previous visits but wanted to learn more about fynbos species and biodiversity of this region. Justin was flexible when we all agreed to adjust the time due to the weather. We are glad we did not cancel as the weather did not improve. He kindly lent us some raincoats. The hike was fabulous and a highlight of our week in Cape Town. It was very educational and w enjoyed hiking in a part of the city that doesn’t get as much traffic as Table Mountain and the Cape of GH. I would be keen to do more hikes with Justin if we return to the city. Thanks, Justin!

      What an experience!
I made this trip in December 2019, with my son. The cloud was low and for a lot of the time we couldn’t see if there was a 10 meter drop or a 200 meter drop. It took us 2–3 hours to walk up It was a real experience.

      Terrific Hikes with Justin
We had 2 fantastic 5hr hikes with Justin during our 2 wk stay in The Cape. Kleintuin Kloof in Slvermine Valley and Kanonkop Peak in Cape Point. Justin’s amazing knowledge of The Cape Fauna and Flora, and local history made these hikes memorable. They were the high lights of our time in Cape Town. I would highly recommend Justin for all ages and abilities.

      Cape Town day trips
Mark provided us with four private tours during our visit to Cape Town. He took my husband on two different birding tours, a family day to Boulders Beach and Cape Point and a friends day to Hermanus. Wow wow wow! Mark’s knowledge is phenomenal, he know all about the flora and fauna and loves to tell you all about it! He never stops talking ( ha ha)! He picked us up from our hotel and either booked a restaurant for lunch or stopped to buy a picnic lunch. Water was provided during the day.

The best Hiking Experience in the Cape of Good Hope!
We had the pleasure of doing an overnight hike with Justin starting at the Cape of Good Hope and finishing up at Smitswinkle bay. It was the most amazing day, his knowledge was second to none, and we managed to learn so much about the local Fauna and Flora in the most awesome place. We will definitely be doing more hikes with Justin on future trips to Capetown, and couldn’t recommend him enough!

    Review for mark
Initially, we booked a tour as we were concerned about safety (crime) and wanted to make sure that we had someone knowledgable to take us up. However, I completely underestimated how much value mark would add to our walk.

The day started out with a heavy mist/cloud which cloaked the mountian, but that in no way tempered our experience. Mark is an excellent guide. In terms of timing and pacing he was perfect. Mark stopped frequently, and helped us to manage our efforts, so getting to the top felt like a breeze. At every stop Mark would point out a flower, or bird or recount a story from his times working on the mountian (he was a ranger before becoming a guide).

His passion for the mountian and its history was infectious, and we got so much more out of the walk than we bargained for.

The fact the sun came out at the top was an added bonus - to be honest I still would have highly rated this experience of it had been cloudy all day.

The hike to Table Mountain, with Justin as my guide, was a truly enjoyable experience. Not only did I have the opportunity to safely reach the summit, but I also gained a wealth of knowledge from Justin's extensive expertise in the local environment. This unique aspect set it apart from all the other guided tours I've been on, making it an invaluable opportunity for those with a keen interest in the distinctive plant and animal life of the Cape region.

We were supposed to go hiking the summit of Table Mountain through Kasteelpoort. Unfortunately the weather was bad and the forecast even worse so our guide proposed a different hike…. Ultimately we hiked through Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens to Skeleton Gorge and Constantianek… What a pleasant surprise……Mark is a walking encyclopedia with his knowlwdge of nature, flowers birds and trees. He was very helpful getting the opportunities for foto’s of birds and we would have loved to learn so much more from him.
It was an amazing journey throughout the incredible nature of Kirstenbosch and the wonderful world of Fynbos!!!

Hiked Kasteelspoort with Mark on Feb 9 and it was an incredible day. He was so knowledgeable about the biome and mountain in general and funny as well. We took several breaks and Mark was patient so I wasn't super exhausted. The views are incredible along the way. Mark provided some Rooibos tea (my new favorite tea!) and some butter biscuits. This was one of the most exciting activities in did in South Africa. I highly recommend booking a guide because the hiking trail could be confusing for someone hiking Table Mountain for the firt time.

Trekked Kasteelspoort with Mark last Tuesday - What a day and what a guide! Perfect weather with little wind - Mark was so knowledgeable about the mountain, from the fauna and wildlife to the history of the Cable Car.

Mark even brought Tea and Biscuits for our mid way stop! 👏👏👏

A great hike with a great guide - I can't recommend this hike with Mark enough! We even bumped into his Son on the way up doing another Hike with an other Group.

Thanks Mark for a great experience that wont be forgotten!

Mark Hawthorne provided a wonderful experience leading us on a memorable hike up Skeleton Gorge to the peak of Table Mountain. This hike is challenging as you make your way up the steep slope that includes ladders, rock scaling, and negotiating often poorly marked paths. Mark picked us up from our hotel and transported us to the Kirstenbosch Gardens leading to the trailhead. From the moment we began our hike, Mark’s expertise as a guide, botanist, birder, and local history buff enhanced our journey through the richest floral kingdom on earth. Mark was not only incredibly knowledgeable , he was an amazing host-even providing hot tea and biscuits as we neared the summit. Mark also helped others along the way who unwisely did not have the benefit of a guide and often made wrong turns where the trail is confusing. His entertaining style made the hike both interesting and fun. This hike was the highlight of our stay in Cape Town and we would highly recommend him.
