About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 215ingan0 contributionsAwesome ExpirienceThe expirience was amazing. Driver was very expiriences, the people that we met were international young students and they were fun to be with. We helped each other. Lesoto people were great. Defenately a warm jacket was useful and needed. I would advise that people bring actual cash as we had an u ha memoment when we just finished eating and the card machine declined all our bank cards from different banks😁Written 15 October 2023
- LouiseCoetzee0 contributionsAmazing Experience!!Amazing experience. What a pleasure to book and deal with this team. Our guide was informative, professional, friendly and made so much effort in securing our safety at all times, sharing history and stories. We were able to take many pictures, see things that will usually be missed. Vehicle was geared for this trip, clean and neat and in top condition. Highly recommended!!! Well priced and was an absolute pleasure and treat.Written 20 June 2023

- MarloesH960 contributionsDon't miss this opportunity to experience something amazingWe were with a travellers group. In 4 jeeps the very skilled drivers drove us through the Sanipass and told us about the flora and fauna in the surroundings as well as the history in that place. Seeing nature changing the higher we drove was extraordinary. Never felt and tasted such cold and fresh water from the mountains. The views were amazing and being in Lesotho was beautiful, again experiencing another culture within a culture.Written 28 July 2022
- marais16190 contributionsMagical Sani PassWe drove from Umhlanga to Underberg in our rental car and met the Major Adventure team there. They were on time, very welcoming and professional! We did a day trip. Leaving Umhlanga at 5:45am and back at 18:15pm. Warren was our tour guide and he is nothing short of amazing. He was extremely knowledgeable about the area, often stopping to point out different animals, birds and plant species. Always taking the time to explain. He went the extra mile!! Even stopping at certain spots to take photo’s for is. Sani pass is a must see but a very bad road. I would never attempt it on my own, but we felt safe at all times. Highly recommended! Top tips: - Take warm clothes - The highest bar n Africa offers nice lunch and drinks and has card facilities. This is a stop point on the tour - PASSPORT - We had to show our vaccination certificate at the border control for covid 19Written 16 June 2022
- Q9641DBkarenw0 contributionsA window to the world, Sani PassAfter trying to book this tour though several other operators, Major Adventures came through with flying colors. Not only did they respond the same day as our inquiry, they contacted us throughout the process to make sure we had the tour we wanted. With covid, the process is a bit more detailed, you must stop at a border post, take a 10-minute covid test, then process through immigration and customs. Off you go up the pass....which is 8km but can take more than an hour to traverse because of the difficult rock-infested road. What a blast we had with Warren. He was knowledgeable, friendly, professional, and truly full of funny and interesting stories to help us under stand not only Underberg, the flora and fauna (including several antelopes including Eland) seen at the pass, but Sani Pass and Lethoso. What a great trip. Do not hesitate to contact Major Adventures, they will take care of you!Written 21 September 2021
- TimothyStruwig0 contributionsView Mountains up HighSandy and I decided to fill an item on our bucket list. I had contacted Main Adventures who arranged a 4x4 vehicle and a tour guide to take Sandy and I to the top. Major Adventures Office Gardi Major arranged a private tour up the Pass. Ellias the tour Guide was superb and his knowledge of the area and his past History of the pass and the surrounding area was incredible not one boring minute on the journey up and down. An extremely well organised trip. Well worth every penny we spent. Just Make a plan to do this and have a well educating and knowledgeable trip this is the definitely right way to go.Written 3 June 2021
- Yasmin-Docrat0 contributionsBreath takingly beautiful and educationalWe had the best day, with Ellias , an ex - military man and the Chuck Norris of difficult terrain driving, we could not have asked for more. Ellias is sooooo knowledgeable and so patient and kind. We went up the sani pass and into Lesotho and he made it such an awesome day. He has the best eye for the animals and birds. He knows about the fauna and flora, he was just outstanding. I arranged the tour, via the hotel, Premier Sani Pass Resort and spoke to Gardi who was easy going and helpful. Ellias then fetched us on the arranged date timeously and so full of energy and enthusiasm. He made the day what it was, a pleasure. He stopped and let us enjoy the views and take pics. He was just outstanding . Thank you Ellias. Best regards Yasmin and Nasreen. God blessWritten 5 April 2021

- Ilkleygirl0 contributionsExcellentWhat a Fantastic trip! We prefer to usually do trips my ourselves but this was better to go with the experts. Elias are guide was excellent , friendly and knowledgeable . Even if we had an 4x4 vehicle I would have still preferred to go on the trip as the road up the Sani Pass is extremely windy and very rocky , Elias was an experienced driver and knew the road.Written 19 December 2019
- J123Y0 contributionsJUST THE BEST. THANK YOU GARDI!We wanted so much to do the Sani Pass and explore Lesotho, but it was difficult getting information about the shape of Lesotho roads and passes, back in Europe. Even in South Africa it was difficult: in Underberg proper, most agencies could not be bothered and told us to go check their website for tours...(we could not go up alone as we did not hire a 4wheel drive, but a SUV) However, we got lucky when we met Gardi from Major Adventures: Friendly, professional, knowledgeable, she explained at great length what the actual shape of the roads in Lesotho is like, and why the Sani Pass is impassable without a 4wheel drive. We would have loved going on a private 4 day trip into Lesotho with her agency, but she was totally booked for our dates. Nevertheless, she helped us shape a plan for touring Lesotho on our own, using Qachas Nek Pass to get into the country. She even went out of her way to provide us with maps before we left, even though she was at a fonction. We cannot recommend enough this agency!Written 14 September 2019
- Wilsonwolf870 contributionsAmazing day with an excellent guide! We were fortunate enough to have Warren as our guide up the pass. He has impressive knowledge on pretty much everything to do with the area. No question went unanswered and the learning we took were vast. We were treated to a history, environmental, geographical and cultural wealth of knowledge which has opened our eyes to many new things. I would highly recommend Warren as a guide as well as Major Adventures. The journey from the booking process all the up and all the way down was a breeze. Warrens driving was impeccable to say the least and anticipates everything up and down through years of experience. What a day and what great memories we now have.Written 7 July 2019
- JuliePinks0 contributionsAmazing day with an extremely informative and great driving guide Warren. What a stunning and informative day, Warren gave us on our trip up Sani Pass. We set off at 10 am on route to the summit of Sani. The drive started off with joke from Warren which set the tone from start to finish. On route through Himevilled we were given a history from Warren which was very informative. All the way to thw border post we were enlifhtened by his knowledge of the area. Aa we gis the border post his passion about what the pass which included eveeything from the driving and his knowledge about the flora and fauna in the area was outstanding. What we thought would be a day of driving up to the summit and back turned into a history, geography, cultural and envirmantal journey. I would highly recommend Warren for trip up Sani Pass.Written 7 July 2019

My family (6 adults) booked the Sani day trip and our expectations were exceeded in every way.
Gardi was very accommodating and the process was seamless.
Our guide, Elias, however, was truly the star of the show. His knowledge of the flora, fauna, history, and geography is faultless - he certainly brought Sani Pass to life for all of us. Additionally, he is a remarkable driver - we felt completely safe in his capable hands.

We had an out of this world experience at Sani Pas. The guide, I think his name was Elias was a former game ranger and his knowledge of the.geology of the Drakensberg, the stories he shared and his hearty laugh made our day. He treated us with extra care, took photos and brought insights into Lesotho we never had.
This is a very worthwhile.gift to yourself, have your cameras charged and ready.
He also drove calmly and always.made us feel safe.

Sonya Caldecott organized my trip with Major Adventures for me as it was my birthday, a cake was provided and that was very special to me. Thank you my friend. Our guide Alan was amazing with the knowledge he shared, a very careful driver and took care of going through the borders with no fuss. Gorgeous views, met strangers and we soon became friends, memories to treasure forever.

During a group trip led by Gert, we used two 4x4 vehicles from Major Adventures in Underberg. Our driver (TsjongeJongeJonge) -(sorry no name) was very knowledgeable about every boulder on the route, a good storyteller and photographer and good at preserving nature. A great experience with a "Springbokkie" in the highest Pub of Africa

An absolutely amazing experience with the most beautiful views. Our Guide Mr Elias deserves a special mention as he truly made the tour extra special, explaining the history of the pass, the types of wildlife, native plants and the names of each bend on the pass, you can see that this guy loves this place and his job. I observed other tours along the way, however it was not even close to the experience provided by Elias and Major Adventures.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Major Adventures for an unforgettable journey—one that I hadn’t even dared to imagine conquering. Heights have always been my Achilles’ heel, yet that fear has now been defeated, thanks to the incredible tour guide, Elois. Elois’s reassuring presence put all my apprehensions at ease.
The history of Lesotho unfolded before us, captivating and intriguing. Did you know that their distinctive hats are shaped like mountains? As we explored, the taste of freshly baked bread lingered on our tongues—a delightful treat for the senses.
While photos and videos can capture moments, there’s nothing quite like experiencing the journey firsthand. The thrill of being there, surrounded by the rugged beauty of Lesotho, is an absolute must. And let’s not forget the amazing group of fellow travellers who made this adventure even more memorable.
In the end, the shared laughter, the awe-inspiring landscapes, and the camaraderie that etch these memories into our hearts. Major Adventures, you’ve left an indelible mark on my soul. Until our next escapade!" 🌄📸🌟

In need for that ultimate 4x4 experience when you don't want to do the driving yourself? This is it!
Feb 2011
Do the unforgettable day-tour on Sani Pass with informative and experienced guides of Major Adventures situated in Underberg. But do be aware, this is not for the fainthearted. If you are scared of really bumpy, narrow, small and winding mountain passes, have any hip or back problems, then this is definitely not for you. The names for some of the bends or not called “Haemorrhoids” or “Hairpin” for nothing .....
The tour, in 4x4 aircon vehicles, takes you on a slow but breathtaking winding road along the Southern Drakensberg Mountains, leaving from Underberg, all the way up to the Roof of Africa with an altitude of 2874m above sea-level and into the Kingdom of Lesotho. This is where you will see Africa in all its glory!
In winter, as well as in the early months of summer (sometimes up to November), you might get ice and snow higher up on the pass. In summer, the road might get washed away by rain on some of the bends, but the guides know what they do; so don’t panic. The scenery stays breathtaking, regardless of the weather! In winter, you have the bluest of blue skies, so your photos would seem almost surreal.
Don't make the mistake a lot of foreign visitors do. Bring wind-breakers or warm fleece jackets - it gets very windy and cold on top of the mountains in Lesotho ... and there is no infrastructure, no trees, no bushes or anything else for that matter, to stop the wind from getting to you. It is flat, except for the mountain peaks all around.
If you are on tour and need to get rid of those unwanted or surplus clothes/shoes, this is the place to do so ... Major Adventures will take you to visit a BaSotho family. Here, there is very little of anything ... The landscape is barren, the crops are few and the livestock is thin.
Beware: The South African border post half way up the pass, is the last time you will see any solid infrastructure with toilet facilities until you reach the highest pub in Africa on the Lesotho side of the border at the top of Sani Pass.... so do take my advice and go to the toilet ... the road is very, very, very long...
The Lesotho Border Post is a small building with no facilities. Major Adventures’ Guides handle your passport and all the other formalities. And no, you are not allowed to take pictures of any of the Border Posts..... and yes, if you do want to take a picture of the tattered wind-blown Lesotho flag, first ask for permission from the man sitting in the sun, rain, wind and snow next to the flag pole...
After crossing the border post, you can take pictures of the Kingdom to your hearts’ content, but stay polite and ask the mothers if you can take pictures of their children first, and a few coins or notes won’t make you poorer but will buy the flour for the month for one family.
Valid passports are essential to get into Lesotho and back. You can have lunch or a drink at the highest pub in Africa (Sani Top Chalets), they do take South African Rands - and the most important thing ... they have toilet facilities!!

While the views of the Sani Pass were spectacular and our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, the general experience with Major Adventures was rather disappointing.
For the cost of the trip we expected more than a ride in what felt like a personal vehicle with inadequate seating arrangements. While my partner's seat was fine I was left with the cramped third row back seat of a regular 4x4. The adjacent windows were not openable so photographs of the amazing views were out of the question for me except during the stops along the way. Unfortunately getting out at these stops involved folding part of the 2nd row forward which had to be cleared of all items each time and inconvenienced the other passengers, especially at the stops where they chose not to get out. This lead to a minor altercation when the folding seat accidentally collided with another passenger's arm.
The company website also highlights the lunch at Africa's highest pub, however this was reduced to a short pitstop with barely enough time for a toasted sandwich and quick photographs as it seemed our fellow passenger's evening dinner booking was more important than the tour we all paid for.
Considering the cost of the tour we expected more professionalism, including suitable vehicles and better time management. Based on our experience we find it hard to recommend Major Adventures for this tour.
