Durban Foodie: Gin and Gelato Tasting — An Internationally Acclaimed Distillery

By Wild Routes Africa
Have you cleansed your palate? Best you do, after all it would be a sin to contaminate an award winning Gin and Gelato tasting. This is an afternoon experience! We know some of you need to keep up appearances and gin in the morning can be considered unbecoming. Weave your way through the raging city streets as you make your way to Station Drive Precinct or Artisan Central as we like to call it. Stroll through the creative enclaves before arriving at Distillery 031 — home to the Durban’s Gin Connoisseurs. Cocktails upon arrival is standard. Tour the distillery and sit down to a mind swirling Gin and Liqueur tasting (90 minutes). With your senses awakened, saunter down to Momenti Gelato where we will meet Edward’s genius gelato makers who will introduce us to their unique creations. Taste everything from Pure Pistachio to Burfee to Turkish Delight and beyond. How about that for a treat!

Let David from Wild Routes Africa Be Your Driver!
I got a transfer from Durban to Makhasa Game Lodge with David from Wild Routes. Truly the best! He was on time, drove nicely and so friendly. Such a pleasure!

          Amazing trip into the past
Brilliant trip to the Drakensberg to visit the incredible rock paintings, enjoy stunning landscapes and see Mandela Capture museum. The whole tour was outstanding from our friendly and wise driver David to the expert Iintuition of anthropologist Jeremy. Only the bumpy roads put a dampener on the 12 hour trip to the Midlands. I can't recommend this tour too highly - it gave us a totally new perspective on South Africa - prehistoric, past and present

          Memorable Midlands trip
A great day trip into the hills to visit the famous rock art. Long drive from Durban with super safe driver David. Jeremy provided expert and entertaining interpretation of the rock art which is located in stunning landscape. Delicious lunch stop and a quick visit to Mandela Capture museum. We really enjoyed our 12 hour tour with the lively company of Jeremy and David. Would highly recommend.

          Manyoni was the best
Was trying to book a custom trip from Richards Bay based on our cruise schedule. Found Wild Routes and they recommended Manyoni private reserve. Best decision we made the whole trip. We went to a park from another port, and they had a handful of animals. Manyoni had herds of some animals with a good number of everything they had. Saw many types in the morning. Then after lunch our hut for the lions began., Finally our guide found them--8 lay sleeping on the riverbank. We sat there for over half an hour watching them. Best trip of our cruise and great service.

          The Real Daily Life Experience
A terrific day out with our wonderful guide, Thabo! (He made it so much more than a ‘tour’). Lots of interesting story sharing and opportunities to immerse in everyday life, without the tacky ‘song and dance’. Lunch in the village was a wonderful experience and delicious! The Muthi market was excellent, albeit a little confronting for my children.

Excellent tour from start to finish!
I don't know where to start. All in all this safari was the highlight of our trip! From the start, working with Justin the founder of Wild Routes was easy and great with communicating to us about pick up and drop off information, and was very speedy in replying when I had questions. Grant who transported us to the Amyoni reserve was a wealth of info about the region and also had great suggestions for us about other things to do for the rest of our trip. He was super courteous and very personable and started our day off right. Our game driver, Mzamo, who took us out on safari was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna and very friendly and engaging. We did the one day big five safari and it didn't disappoint! Mzamo got us as close to the animals as he could while respecting safety. At one point we were within 3 meters of a lioness, and at another we were the just as close with a cheetah and her cubs while they were feasting on a freshly caught impala. It was amazing! We saw a wide variety of wildlife in the reserve, Giraffe, cheetah, Impala, wart hog, wilderbeast, zebra, rhino, lion, just to name a few. Just remember there is no guarantee what you'll see as this is not a zooand these are animals in the wild, but know that you will have an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend Wild Routes and it is a very good value for your hard earned money! Thank you Justin, Grant, and Mzamo for an amazing trip! We will be back again for sure.

          Amazing experience
It was a lovely experience - as a young woman travelling alone I was really worried, but everyone in this company made their best to help me feel safe to take this journey. Everyone was kind, they attended to my needs and the safari was an unique and amazing experience I will never forget. This park might be smaller than others, but this makes the guides know it better and it is truly beautiful. I can't wait to come back.

          Manyoni 2 Day Safari
Wild Routes Africa is a truly amazing company to go with. I really couldn’t rate them more highly. From the start Justin was quick to answer questions and make recommendations based on our budget and preferences. He was also able to tailor the tour so that we got all the key bits out of it that we wanted. The tour started with collection from the airport, followed by an amazing dusk game drive with our very knowledgable guide Mzano then back to the lodge for an incredible brai cooked by Thabo who entertained us with his stories and incredible knowledge of the local area, history of the area and animal facts! After a good night’s rest at our beautiful lodge we were collected again by Mzano for an all day game drive where we enjoyed breakfast and lunch out in the bush. We were then driven back to Durban (although we were so exhausted that we slept the whole way!) Such an amazing experience for our first ever Safari where we saw a cheetah and her cub, lions, rhino, monkeys, baboons, zebra, giraffe, wild dogs, so many antelope and so much more I can’t list them all. A great company and your that I would recommend to anyone. Thank-you.

Reliable, comfortable and safe group transportation in South Africa. 5 plus stars!!
Wild Routes Africa handled transportation for my family of 7 while we were in Durban & beyond. They were punctual, quick to respond to questions/concerns, knowledgeable and always ready to go above and beyond to make us feel safe & comfortable. Not having to worry about getting from point A to point B was a huge weight off our shoulders. Highest of recommendations.

          Exceptional customer service!
What can I say? Justin and his team at Wild Routes went exceptionally above and beyond to ensure that our private transfer from Durban (King Shaka International Airport) to Montusi Mountain Lodge in the Northern Drakensberg (and back to Durban) was seamless, flawless, and excellent. Amazing customer service, extraordinary attention to detail, and very kind engagement with both management and the drivers. As someone who was anxious about being able to connect with a safe and reputable transfer into the mountains (not having a car, as we are from the US and would fail a driving test hehe), the process was easy and smooth. Our driver Thabo went above and beyond to make us feel more than welcome and was a great conversationalist that helped the 4 hour ride each way pass very quickly. I cannot recommend this company enough. Other tour and transfer companies should take note! I discovered this company after a very poor experience with another company in the area, so I am happy to say I will be using them again on future visits to KZN and SA.

          Fabulous Adventure
What an amazing experience! From the moment David (our driver to/from the Manyoni Private Game Reserve), picked me up at 5am the entire experience was stellar and beyond reproach. David, a consummate professional, gentleman and conversationalist who provided additional colour regarding the areas we traveled through on our way to the safari. It was fascinating to learn about the various regions and local agriculture. Then, we were delivered to Ivor who was our safari guide at the Manyoni Private Game Reserve and he too was incredibly personable, knowledgable, relaxed, and his role of safari guide was only surpassed by his love for the land, its natural inhabitants, his role in conservation and supporting wildlife for generations to come. Ivor's persistence paid-off as we were able to get up close to lions, cheetahs buffalo, many antelope including Kudu, giraffe and rhino. The entire day was a thoughtful and educational experience and I highly recommend.

Big 5 Day trip - Manyoni Private Game Reserve
We've recently went on a safari trip to Manyoni Private Game Reserve and it was an absolutely unforgettable experience! Justin, the owner of the safari company, made sure everything ran smoothly from start to finish. He was very organized and had everything planned out perfectly. Thabo, our personal driver, was amazing too! He was very knowledgeable about South African culture, the animals and their habits. Mboza, our safari tour guide, was also fantastic! He had a great sense of humor and was very patient with us as we tried to spot animals in the wild and ask series of questions. Overall, our experience with Wild Routes Africa on our safari trip to Manyoni Private Game Reserve was truly life-changing. We'll never forget the incredible sights, sounds, and experiences that we had on this trip. I would highly recommend Wild Routes Africa to anyone looking for a truly unique and unforgettable experience. Thank you, Wild Routes Africa, for an amazing experience that we'll never forget!
