About
Discover the history of Soweto, where political icons lived during Apartheid, fighting against the regime. Explore the everyday life, meet the locals, taste local cuisine and get an authentic experience with a Sowetan native guide. Start at the Hector Pietersen Museum and hear about the Soweto uprising that transpired in 1976, which was one the turning point of Apartheid. Visit the famous house of Nelson Mandela in Vilakazi Street, built in 1945, where he lived until he was imprisoned for 27 years. Have a conversation about Arch bishop Desmond Tutu in the famous street in Vilakazi Street. Continue through Orlando East, the first formal settlement of Soweto and Orlando Stadium, home to the Orlando Pirate and ride a minibus taxi to the last stop at the Orlando Towers. Listen to the many personal stories about the family's generations, how apartheid had an impact in each and everyone of them and how Soweto has changed today. Enjoy a traditional, local lunch of Kota (Local burger)

This was one of the best walking tours I’ve ever taken. Our guide, Sibusiso, is a local raised in Soweto and was an absolute professional. He has immense knowledge of the history of Soweto and South Africa in general. He’s a great speaker and it was captivating to hear him recount the history of the origins of the neighborhood, the 1976 uprisings, Nelson Mandela’s house, and more. He made us feel very comfortable and gave us the option to watch street performers or keep moving. We went to Soweto Brewing Company and tried some beers too. Overall it was such a great day. I can’t recommend enough how important it is to get a guide to show you around Soweto — it makes a huge difference if you really want to gain an understanding of the significance of this historic community. Try this tour, you won’t regret it!

It's not just the knowledge and detail in the history, present, and ideas to the future that Rambo has down and communicates efficiently, it's the entire philosophy behind his presentation that makes me recommend his tourguiding skills so highly. It was transcendent, he is truly a storyteller. His rendition of the history of Soweto is brought alive by stories, music, and an experience of the fabric of the neighborhood throughout time. I learned more than I could have in any other way about South Africa in just a few hours. I got it, hope everyone reading this gets a chance to experience the place with the openness, fun, and inviting and graceful inclusion that Soweto Walking Tour can provide. I'm deeply grateful to have gotten the chance through them to witness a place so deeply and clearly.

The Soweto Walking Tour was amazing! I did it in 24th of September of 2019 - Heritage Day. It was super cool! Starting in the Hector Pietersen museum around 1pm, passing through Mandela’s House and in front of Desmond Tutu’s house and finishing at Soweto Towers to watch the sunset and drink a good beer. Strongly recommend for those interested in learning a little more about Joburg history!

Rambo just contains so much impactful information! It’s incredible. He is truly a gem whom is passionate about what he does while proudly and profoundly relays historic events. His gentle nature will draw you in but it's the spunky and quick-witted responses that kept me entertained.

Overall, beautiful representation of triumph, struggle and growth. I highly recommend!

(Side note, please let him know of any dietary restrictions prior to the meal.)

It was the last day of our trip and while we were hesitant about going to Soweto - it would have been the worst mistake had we not gone. Mfundo so well versed in the history of Soweto that we could not have asked for a better tour guide. We walked the streets as if we belonged to the community and all it stood for. He gave us a history lesson that I would have never learned in a book in the United States and we were astonished to learn about the South African fight against the regime.
Since Covid, the people of Soweto are hurting due to the lack of jobs and tourism and they need us to visit and pour our tourist dollars into their communities. And if that is all we can give then so be it.
There are no books that can give the experience you need to fully comprehend the history of Soweto. It's more than taking a tour of Mandela's prior home, it's more than taking pictures at the Hector Pieterson Memorial. When you walk the streets of where the students of Soweto lost their lives in what was know as a peaceful protest you will feel their spirit and the spirit of those who fought to end Apartheid.

My friends and I greatly enjoyed the walking tour in Soweto. Our guide Tebogo was so knowledgeable and so passionate about Soweto, that we couldn't ask for something better than that. For me the highlight was the visit to Mandela's house, the dancers on Vilakazi Street and the beer tasting!

SSipho was full of passion about his place, Soweto, and about the tragic but also inspiring story of the place and the people living and fighting there.
He gave us a tour not only about the past struggles, but also a tour about what is Soweto in the present, full of people wanting to thrive with their business and ventures, and residents leaving their mark with art and music.
Really the walking experience is complete and one gets to not only see a place, but to fully understand the story of it and the people. It really leaves you wanting to go back and having more experiences there, like the one with live music.

In short, if you wanna get to know the real Johannesburg, this is the tour and Sipho is your perfect host and tour guide.

A Soweto walking tour and visit to Hector Pietersen museum was an apt way to reflect on Freedom Day, Tuesday 27 April.

Thank you to our amazing guide Rambo and One day Africa tours!

Rambo’s knowledge, insight and wit was brilliant, giving us all the historical significance of key sites, as well as sharing everyday life experiences of living in Orlando, Soweto.

Our tour would not have been complete without experiencing the taste sensation of kota!

And Rambo was able to adapt our tour, due to the Orlando towers being closed on a public holiday, to include a visit to the Soweto Gold brewery for a tour and beer tasting.

Rambo paced the walking speed and distance well with breaks for refreshments and bathroom stops really well.

Would highly recommend anyone to do this tour!

Excellent experience with Tebogo, who was very friendly and welcoming, and extremely knowledgable about the Soweto township (neighbourhood) and its rich history at the heart of anti-apartheid protest. The tour started with the memorial to the 16 June 1976 Soweto Student Protest, moved on to the home of Nelson Mandela, past the homes of Desmond Tutu and Winnie Mandela, then on to the Soweto Brewing Company, and finished at the Soweto Towers. Beer tasting at the brewing company was optional - but would definitely recommend.

It was an interesting day visiting Soweto and Maboneng Street Art with Lebo. He has plenty of information about South Africa history and his way of explaining it is really enjoyable. Thanks Lebo and One Day Africa Tours for this experience. I recommend anyone coming to Johannesburg to get in touch with them.
