We enjoyed learning about the history of these places with the knowledgeable and friendly guides. If you visit Johannesburg, we definitely recommend taking a tour with One Day Africa.Written 12 March 2025
- 818georgw0 contributionsInteresting and fun tour!Interesting tour with a fun and knowledgeable guide! Got to see some things I hoped to see (abandoned skyscrapers, colonial architecture) and some I didn't expect to find (a bustling shopping street). I really enjoyed to finally see the CBD, learn more history and get a feeling of the area, especially since I stayed with friends further out in the suburbs.Written 7 March 2025

- Meander414576829810 contributionsSoweto Walking Tour - Ladies Day OutWe had such an amazing time with our visit to Soweto. Our guide met us at the coffee shop in Vilakazi street as arranged and on time. He is a local in Soweto and very knowledgable and professional, and fun! You do not walk past someone and not greet, this was so refreshing as everyone in the neighbourhood is so friendly and kind. We felt welcome throughout the trip. You can dress anyway you like but some comfy shoes is definitely recommended, the walks wasn’t hard but you are on your feet most of the day. The taxi drive was an experience, the respect the people driving in it towards each other was nice to witness, if a lady climbs in with a baby or an elderly person, everyone moves up so they can sit in front. The Kota burger was amazingly lekker, our guide told us that it would be our cheat day and it was well worth it. The whole trip was insightful and so much fun. We were 3 ladies, me, my mom and my sister-in-law. Thank you One Day Africa, we can recommend you for this tour any day.Written 26 January 2025
- Jet059031910670 contributionsTHE BEST TOUR IN SOWETOMawesa is an EXCELLENT tour guide which really enhanced the quality of the tour. He is well known and respected by the community, so we were able to go into very economically depressed areas, all the while feeling totally safe. I HIGHLY recommend this tour!Written 26 January 2025
- deedyj20240 contributionsThe Ultimate Street Art Tour in Johannesburg! If you’re looking for an unforgettable cultural experience in Johannesburg, the street art tour of Maboneng is an absolute must! From the moment the tour begins, you’re immersed in a vibrant world of creativity, history, and storytelling. Refilled is incredibly knowledgeable, weaving fascinating narratives about each piece of art, the artists behind them, and the social and political contexts they reflect. His passion for the area and its artistry is infectious. Beyond just admiring the stunning murals, you’ll learn about the rich cultural significance of Maboneng and how street art has transformed this neighborhood into a hub of expression and innovation. Highly recommended for anyone visiting!Written 25 January 2025
- Bertbelgian0 contributionsGreat local experienceThe tour was great. Maweza knows so much and so many people! Bontle holds her own and will be great when she starts leading the tours. I think the way they set the tour up is perfect. It is important to see all the facets of this society and to hear the history that lead to it. I am glad they do not shy away from showing us the poverty that is a part of Soweto and South Africa. I would highly recommend this tour. The food we were given was delicious. And there was vegetarian option. The bus ride was a unique part.Written 13 January 2025

Great tour. Highly recommended. The lunch was not good - make sure you tell your guide if you want more on the sandwich than a fried egg and french fries. There are add on options, including burgers, cheese, sausages, etc., but they cost extra. Our guy didn’t let us know that and the egg and fries did not do the trick. If we go back, we would skip the sandwich and opt for lunch T one of the many restaurants in the area.Otherwise this was a really wonderful experience, and we would recommend it to anyone who wants to get an idea of the history and significance of the Soweto Township.

We had a great bike ride with Themba through Soweto - learning about the history and discussing what’s happening today. We felt very safe throughout and were not bothered by random strangers (which is what would have happened if we were on our own). We also ended up riding through the lead up to an ANC rally in prep for the elections. Strong reco!

Together with guide Linda, his abbreviation for difficult name was fantastic. He was entertaining, answered all questions and took us to places where you could not or would not dare to go alone. Had a good eye for the group. Highly recommended if you like cycling.

The whole experience was a humbling, informative and enjoyable one. Themba our guide was such a lovely, fun person who did a great job taking us through the historic and cultural highlights of Orlando West and East. The cycling itself is a bit up and down, but it takes you places I don’t think you’d otherwise get to, and I’d really recommend it. It also felt much less intrusive than the two or three large tourist parties we came across at Vilakazi Street, the tourist ‘hub’ of this area. The ‘kota’ for lunch was quite the tasty experience! A great morning.

Linda from Lebo’s bicycle tours took us on an immersive tour of Soweto and was such an amazing guide. Full of knowledge, humour and all round great guy. This warm and vibrant community welcomed us with open hearts and we learnt so much about the history of Soweto within this atmosphere topped off by a delicious lunch back at the community hostel. The hostel itself is a truly magical and unique place. If you want to feel a part of the Soweto community. Do this! Sending love and thanks. xx

We had a wonderful time on our bicycle tour in Soweto, Johannesburg! Mulalo, our guide, made the experience memorable with insightful commentary as we explored the vibrant community. The four-hour journey was filled with cool sights, and we appreciated the well-planned itinerary. We also stopped for lunch at a local ‘chip shop’. I’d recommend this tour for a unique and enriching adventure.

Welile's was an amazing guide and the bike tour of Soweto was an eye-opening experience, offering a deep dive into South Africa's history and culture. Welile's knowledge and kindness shone through as he shared stories of apartheid and Soweto's journey to freedom. The tour included a delicious lunch and well-maintained bikes, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable ride. Highly recommended for a comprehensive Johannesburg experience beyond the affluent areas.

This was an AMAZING tour! After weeks of incredible safaris and gorgeous landscapes we weren't exactly looking forward to a historical tour in Soweto, however T quickly captured our attention and hearts and made this one of the best parts of our trip. He was knowledgeable and able to give us a perspective unlike any other. The lunch (Kota) was the best meal we had all trip and I'm desperately searching for a restaurant in Toronto that makes it. Make sure you bring extra cash on this trip, as you'll need to pay for entering the mandela house and tip some friends you meet along the way.

Dumi was an amazing guide - he kept my teenagers interested and engaged, and somehow imparted a wealth of knowledge in a short time. He is from Soweto himself and really gave us an insider's perspective. The bikes were high quality, just a little hard on the hills because no speeds (but totally manageable - the hills aren't bad). No bike lanes though so if you don't like riding next to a lot of traffic, consider the walking tour instead. This tour was a highlight of our South Africa visit.

Themba was a wonderful tour guide! The tour started in the main square where he gave us a great history of the neighborhood. Once on the bikes, we were able to cover 12.5kms during our 2 hours tour. We saw so much and really enjoyed the morning bike ride. The bikes and helmets provided were good and allowed to get up and down the rolling terrain.
