About
Skateboarding and big cities around the world can't be separated from each other - we love how the city's skaters use the urban space in Johannesburg on a daily basis! Johannesburg sometimes has a negative and controversial reputation as a city and so does skateboarding - this tour is about challenging these ideas! By looking at the inner city through the eyes of a skater and life-long resident of Johannesburg, we challenge these stereotypes and look at how we can build a more skateboard and people friendly city in Johannesburg! If you've ever wanted to learn how to skate or are interested in learning more about the city of Johannesburg - or are just looking for something different to do - then this tour is for you! We love skateboarding and we love our city, we want to share both of them with all of you and the world!

What to expect
  • The experience starts in Maboneng (one of the world's 12 coolest neighbourhoods - Forbes 2018) with a skate lesson before skating around this developing neighbourhood and experiencing its vibrant and diverse street life made up of public art, street vendors and restaurants! We then take an Uber to Marshalltown where you see some of the city's oldest buildings while learning about the skateboarding culture in this area - we also visit some popular skate spots along the way and discuss how to create a more skate and pedestrian-friendly city! The tour ends in Newtown (caught between urban "decay" and urban regeneration) which is rich in graffiti, street art and a popular night time spot for many locals! The tour is a mixture of factual information and my own personal views about the cities urban development and what improvements and changes I would like to see in the city! As skateboarders, cities are our urban playgrounds - this experience is all about looking at the city through the eyes of a skater! This experiences is designed to accommodate all skill levels - from experienced to beginner, don't worry if you've never skated before, we'll teach you in no time!

Everything and more

My perceptions of myself and JHB were challenged, in the best ways possible. My fear was replaced with curiosity and a sense of belonging. Ayanda is inspirational! The passion he feels for his city and how spaces need to serve communities. Incredible!

A different side to Joburg
Feb 2020 • Friends
My friend and I had a really fun time with city skate tours. I grew up around joburg but I still learnt so much! We had a skate lesson before the tour but still managed to see a large part of the town. Would definitely recommend for anyone interested in the history (and culture) of Joburg:)

Really fun skate tour! The leader Iyanda was really friendly and had heaps of cool locations and knowledge to share with us. He was very attentive to the group and created a nice atmosphere. Great vibes all round!- I went as a solo skater but can image it would also be nice for groups of friends... Highly recommend this outing and exploring Maboneng! (I might add I don't usually write reviews but when the invite popped up on my emails I felt compelled due to having such a nice time!) Thank you, hope to visit again :)

Worthwhile experience for tourists AND Residents

An awesome way to experience the city! Easily one of my favorite experiences in Johannesburg! Ayanda is very well informed on the history of the town and has really set up a fun way to learn about and navigate through it all. If you’ve never skated before, don’t sweat it, you will survive and have a good time!

Great way to explore downtown Johannesburg!
Feb 2019 • Solo
I spent a few hours skating around downtown Joburg with Mnyandu from City Skate Tours and had an awesome time! I totally recommend the tour, both because it’s a really fun way to see downtown and because Mnyandu is such a good guide! Just do it! You’ll feel safe on the board even if you are a beginner, Mnyandu will show you the ropes. I’m not an absolute beginner but I am a 50 year old woman and I had a blast!

A must do experience in Maboneng!!!!
Nov 2019 • Friends
We came to do an experience as sisters and had an amazing time. We 1st thought there was no way we would be able to actually catch on and skate but we eventually did with the help of Ayanda and his team. The experience was fun and such a out-of-the-box way of seeing the city. Apart from just skating, our guide Ayanda was knowledgeable about the city and would give us information as we moved across the city. This is an experience for almost everyone even if you're from Joburg like we are. You might end up wanting to get yourself a board after the experience.

Such an amazing experience. Takes a little time to figure out but with the help of Ayanda you’ll be cruising down the streets of Johannesburg with full confidence. A lot of great historical information and great sites to see on this tour. 10/10 would recommend for anyone visiting South Africa

Must-Do Inner City Experience
May 2019 • Solo
City Skate Tour is a highly recommended way of experiencing and moving through the Inner City of Joburg.

Ayanda explained in the beginning how to ride and stop and gave us some time to get used to the skateboard. We practiced on a quiet bit of Foxstreet before we headed out towards Maboneng. I felt super safe throughout the entire trip, knowing Ayanda always had our backs!

This tour is so awesome because it's an unusual way of experiencing a city. More importantly, it's such an exciting way to indulge in Joburg's street life, learn about the places' history as well as Ayanda's personal view on how to conquer public urban spaces such as Joburg's Inner City.

Thank you for a fun weekend adventure!
