JoburgPlaces Understanding Joburg Walking Tour

By JoburgPlaces
About
This is our most famous walking tour and the one we recommend as a first introduction to the city, since it provides the best insight to the history of the city and what makes the contemporary city. Starting off with a storytelling on the opening history of the city, we walk and explore the ‘Wiser West’, the oldest district of Joburg inner-city. Marvel at the architecture and stories of Joburg during the gold rush, the plush Edwardian era (early 1900s) and all the way to the diverse and energetic current-day Joburg with coffee shops and eateries along Main Street. Admire the Shadow Boxer sculpture where Mandela & Tambo once had offices. Be astonished by the square where Gandhi once worked as a lawyer in the court. This tour tells the full story of Joburg – from pre-gold rush days to its ‘glory days’, spectacular urban decline and current-day city regeneration. You will leave astonished!

      J’burg / Soweto City Tour
Gerald was super informative on the history of J’burg and Soweto. You really felt the history come alive through his stories and the associated site visits. The tour really made us truly appreciate the city, history, and culture. I highly highly recommend.

      Fantastic guide, enjoyable stroll
I did the Marshalltown half-day walking tour with Charlie. He is a fantastic storyteller and highly knowledgeable about Jozi's history and current context. I've been on many walking tours and have never come across a guide with more knowledge and obvious passion for his city than Charlie - it's honestly like getting a university-level education! Marshalltown and the CBD are safe to walk around (during the day). The walk is about 4 hours with two coffee breaks, during which Charlie continues his history lesson. Highly recommended!! When I come back to South Africa, I will book more of their activities.

Enlightening and fun - a must do for locals as well as tourists
We enjoyed the whole evening but particularly loved how this gave us fresh perspectives on our own city and its history. It also delights me to see the creativity and entrepreneurship by which this historic building is being given life instead of left to crumble into ruin, not to mention creating much needed jobs. Having a drink in an old bank vault with the signs of a long-ago robbery still visible is not an everyday experience! The staff are great, there's a lovely mood in the place from the team.

Wow, What an unusual place to eat in the inner city!
Leave the suburbs and embrace the vibe of JHB. Those who are looking for a little bit more fun than a fine dining establishment, enjoy a magical evening of storytelling , poetry and amazing food. Dine in the old bank vaults of JHB. One is welcomed by friendly, attentive staff. The storytelling keeps one captivated by the history of JHB, and the food that is served, also captures this history. This is really a chance to experience a truly special part of JHB's history. Jozi is indeed a remarkable place of history, art and humanity. The venue is amazing! A highly recommended outing to do when visiting JHB.

Thandi's food is to die for
We visited Zwipi Underground this evening (our second visit), on my, what an incredible evening, Thandi the chef introduced us to the most amazing flavours, some highlights, home baked bread, warm avocado soup, beetroot jus, Springbok carpaccio, every mouthful a taste of heaven. This is not a cheap evening R2,300 for 4 people, before you have a drink, worth every cent. Do yourselves a favour, visit this Johannesburg gem

A secret underground story telling dinner - in a vault - what a great evening
We had a great evening - the zwipi underground is an amazing place. Its magically filled with lights - there are also lots of different rooms. We went as a group of about 10 and so we had a room to ourselves. There were also smaller rooms where a couple could go. The food was delicious and good vegetarian options. The stories of Joburg were also really interesting and though i have lived here for years i learnt a lot in a fun way.

What a fantastic secret safari dining experience
We joined Joburg Places for the secret underground safari Gin tasting evening. It was so worth it. Gerald, Princess and the team created a fun evening filled with history of Jozi that blew our minds. The evening was well planned, the walk from one venue to the other so exciting, as we didn’t have a clue where we were going. Without giving anything away - the destination for the main course was awesome! The menu that Princess put together, as well as the meals, were very tasty and despite the challenges of having to cook at one venue and serve the meal at another on the evening-it worked out perfectly. The fact that the majority of the veggies etc is sourced from the inner city rooftop gardens is an added appeal. We are definitely booking one of the other tours. It was an amazing experience. Well worth it.

      Tasteful and different entertainment experience
A fantastic way to learn about the history and heart beat of the city with delicious food. I would have liked to have a little more per serving and wish the fish had something to compliment it. On the whole a fabulous evening!

The Urban Farming tour is a must to see diversity and uniqueness of this capital of Africa.
The team @ JoburgPlaces are the best, Gerald’s knowledge of Johannesburg makes this an unforgettable experience. Experiencing the vibe of urban farming in Jozi will open your eys to what is possible in terms of food production for an ever increasing urban population. This will become one of the continents best tours. Take some money along to support the local urban farmers, and by organic, locally produced produce straight out of the city.

Fantastic walking tour in the Inner-City of Jo’burg
Oh my God!!!!!! You have to do a tour with them!!! You will not regret it!! As a brazilian tourist first-time in Johannesburg i would really recommend it!!! First ot all: Gerard is a professional and knowledgeable and has been doing tours for a long time here. So he does know what he is doing! Trust me! He went out of his way to make our walking tour in the Inner-City possible and quite last minute. We didn’t actually meet in person, but he was pretty fast and responsive on whatsapp after we booked the activity on airbnb (we had a small problem and he helped solved!). The tour itself was done with Charlie and he was G-R-E-A-T !!! Answered all our questions, gave amazing tips, explained in detail the history of South Africa and Jo’burg and we didnt even feel the time pass by at all! We really enjoyed the tour and his approach. I will def. recommend them when back home... people are still afraid to come to Jo’burg, but we felt safe and cannot wait to come back here and see this city’s continuous positive transformations!!

      Fascinating glimpse of emerging Johannesburg
Our Guide, Charlie Moyo, took us on a tour of the Fashion District. We started at the Joziburg Lane complex, a budding shopping/living/eating/co-working center in an old Rolls Royce showroom, and wound our way past old and new buildings. We walked past many tempting stores and stopped to shop for fabrics (my #1 goal). Charlie lives in the neighborhood and shared lots of great facts about this part of town that is slowly getting revitalized. We ended with a great Ethiopian meal before returning to the starting point. Highly recommended.

Charlie Moyo - Gem of Jozi
We did a Central Jozi walking tour starting at Hangout Jozi (a repurposed old Rolls Royce distribution and storage centre, now a residential and retail building). Charlie is so intuitively friendly and knowledgeable that walking the streets with him is like hanging with a buddy who just swatted Jozi history. His walk was interesting, stimulating and entertaining. His knowledge is awesome and his love for the City is infectious. We will be doing other tours with him. The City was safe, pretty and interesting. Highly highly recommended. Charlie is a Gem of Jozi.

Charlie took us on a fantastic tour of Johannesburg. As we had booked a private tour, he had the opportunity to tailor the tour to our interests (as urbanists and housing profressionals) and it was a mindblowing day full of stories and deep history.
Highly recommend! This is the perfect tour for a local, South African or tourist!

This is an awesome tour where you gain a great understanding of Joburg’s history. It was totally made by Charlie Moyo our guide who is so much fun to spend 4 hours with. He is knowledgeable and is a great storyteller. We found him through an article in the New York Times entitled 36 hrs in Johannesburg. Don’t miss this tour. A true appreciation of Joburg.

I did both the Marshalltown and City Centre walking tour and both were fantastic! Charlie is a great guide and brings the history and culture of the city to life through his passionate narrative. Joburg is truly the most dynamic and interesting city in South Africa and if you want to experience and understand why Joburg is so wonderfully crazy then these tours are perfect. As a young South African I realized that my understanding of Joburg history (and its pivotal role in the formation of SA) is limited and fragmented. These tours truly contextualize and illuminate the mad, painful and complex history of South Africa. I left with a sense of wonder for the city and even more hope for this incredible place.
