About
Situated within the Gold Reef City complex, the Apartheid Museum takes visitors into the dark heart of South Africa’s past. Opened in 2001, this one-of-a-kind museum documents the rise and fall of Apartheid. Exhibits including film footage, photographs and artefacts take visitors on a dramatic and emotionally charged journey from devastating racial segregation to the liberation of the oppressed. Discover how South Africa has shed the tyranny of its past and created a future as bright as the African sun itself.

This was an awesome experience! Banele was fantastic, knowledgeable and super kind. We couldn’t have had a better guide who had so much historical knowledge. Highly recommend this tour. Ask for Banele!

        Amazing, Must-do tour of Johannesburg
My wife and I were lucky enough to have done a tour in April 2024 with Mo and it was a fantastic experience. It was of course, a very comfortable, smooth trip, we were very well looked after. Mo was totally comprehensive, and gave us a good sense of this amazing city. Mo was charastmatic, and deeply knowledgeable and considered. He had an acute understanding of profound topics involving the city, history, politics, and sociology. He was very approachable, and passionate in sharing his knowledge which is exactly what you want when you want to get to know the deeper parts of a city. It was a very refreshing experience, and fantastic to do with someone from the area like Mo. Honestly a must-do experience for any trip to South Africa, it was eye-opening and critical I think to be able to better understand the city and country. You will be sorely missing this tour if you decide to not visit Johannesburg, and see only other cities. An amazing guide, tour, and of course such a pleasure see this extrodinary city!

        Thank you Stephenson Adventures!
We had two days off during a work trip to South Africa and wanted to make the most of them. Stephenson Adventures helped us to do just that! We did a one day Joburg and Soweto Tour and a one day Pilanesberg Safari. Both were amazing days. We learned and experienced so much and our guides were both knowledgeable, professional, and fun. I will definitely call on Stephenson Adventures again!

        A Packed Day Seeing Johannesburg
Our guide, Banele, picked up on time at our hotel in Johannesburg. We are a family of 4, 2 in our 50’s and 2 in our 20’s. We were the only ones on our tour in a clean van. Our 21-year-old was not thrilled at the thought of a full day tour, but even she felt like it was a great day learning about Nelson Mandela and Apartheid and seeing the city. Our guide was so knowledgeable and was a great driver even when negotiating heavy traffic without stoplights working at times. We always felt completely safe with him. He told us about the history of Joburg as we drove and gave us an overview before each stop. He took care of getting all the entry tickets. We had separate site guides at the Old Fort Jail and the Mandela House in Soweto. Banele walked us through the low-class part of Soweto, and we again felt completely safe. He had lived there previously and knew the people there. Getting to step inside a woman’s tiny home was a highlight of the day. Banele was very organized and was always waiting for us right where he said he would be when we he gave us time to explore at our own pace at a couple of stops. He spoke excellent English and was easy to understand. He also took us to a nice local restaurant that served an African cuisine buffet which we enjoyed (at your own cost). Banele did not volunteer his life story to us but when we asked questions, it was so inspiring to hear his story. We felt like seeing the good and bad parts of the city and learning more about the history of Nelson Mandela and the history of Apartheid were very important in making a visit to South Africa. We also saw how we all have the same hopes and dreams for our children even when we live in very different. circumstances. We highly recommend others spend a day on this tour!

        Best way to see Johannesburg
If you want to learn about the rich history of the area and the current day lifestyle, do this tour. Very eye opening. Your guide is like talking to a history teacher. They take you places other tours don't go. Highly recommended if you really want to know Johannesburg.

        A must do in Johannesburg
A really memorable day in Johannesburg with this local company. Our guide Tsholo arrived on time and greeted and introduced himself to our party of four. Straight away you could see he was a very friendly guy, neat and tidy and the vehicle was immaculate. We done the Joburg and Soweto tour which was an all day tour with quite a few stops and all the time Tsholo was very passinate with his work and his country. He is very informative, humerous and very knowledgeable about the history, both poitical and industrial in the area. The highlight for us was the opportunity to have a short guided tour of one of Soweto's large poor shanty towns. The guide here was a 20 year old young man who explained how they live in these places awaiting an opportunity to be rehoused in a proper dwelling. He also was very friendly and proud of his heritage. To be able to have this rare opportunity of the tour Stephensons company donates a percentage of the cost of our tour ticket to this community to aid in schooling for these children. Cold water provided all day as well. We were taken to a local restaurant for lunch, which also was very good. We would highly recommend this company for any tours or shuttle services they provide. It isn't a big company and if the rest of the staff are like Tsholo you can't possibly have a bad experience. Garry from Austalia

        Wonderful day with Mo!
Mo was a fantastic tour guide! He was full of historical and cultural knowledge and more than happy to answer all our questions. I was a bit reserved about being in Johannesburg, but felt perfectly safe with Mo’s guide. I truly enjoyed my day and was able to see and experience things I never would have without his guidance.

        AMAZING TOUR. MO IS AWESOME!
Our tour was EXCELLENT! We had Mo as a tour guide and he was AMAZING. Super knowledgeable and informative! During our entire tour he answered all our questions and we always felt safe. Lunch was at a really tasty restaurant with a buffet or you could order from a menu. It was super interesting visiting where Mo is from and currently lives and seeing the different classes that live in Soweto. All in all I HIGHLY recommend this tour.

        All day Tour of Johannesburg
We did the all day tour of Joberg with Banele. It was a great experience since we saw many things we would have missed since we only had one day in Johannesburg. Banele was on time, very knowledgeable and fun! We highly recommend!

More to Jburg than you see on the news
Our guide, Tsholo, was able to expose us to much more of Jburg than one normally sees on the news. In total safety and comfort, you’ll see the homes of Mandela, the Nelson Mandela square, the Constitution Hill (and former prison) as well as some incredible scenic views of the city from high above. You’ll learn history of the city, both the rich and poor aspects, as well as the country’s successful struggle to throw off apartheid. You’ll get to see and sit in the Constitution Court and understand the symbolic architecture. In 4 hours or so, Tsholo helped us understand a course worth! Highly recommended. Also, expect to have your email inquiries answered promptly from this well run, efficient and safety conscious company.

Expand your world horizons, and take this tour.
If you are visiting Jburg, you owe it to yourself to take a guided tour of Soweto, and you will not find a better organization to take you on the tour. Our guide, Mo, was excellent, establishing rapport with everyone we met whether the staff at Kliptown school, the Mandela home, the Hector Pieterson museum, or a resident of Soweto. You’ll see the stadiums, the various residential and business areas of Soweto, the struggles of everyday living all while being perfectly safe and well guided. Set aside what you hear on the news, and get out and meet the people. This company will not disappoint. You’ll find that your inquiries by email will be fully and quickly answered.

I booked a tour from Steve, the driver Mo picked up us on time, and full of patience, i had really good time during the safari ,we saw more 10 animals over there, and went toSun city. Sun city was nice and beautiful. This trip will spent around 12 hours, you have to have a good sleep the previous day. I definitely will choose them again.

        Very informative tour!!
We’ve had an amazing trip with Mo!! We even had a private tour, due to low season. That felt already really special. We learned a LOT about the events around apartheid and of course the life of Nelson Mandela. Heavy information, but really good to know how it affected the lives of the people living in Johannesburg and Soweto. And how it still affects them. Thanks a lot to Mo for sharing some personal information about his life. We saw all sides of Johannesburg and Soweto, and we felt very safe at all times as well. Would definitely recommend when visiting Johannesburg!

Great tour guide--on time, safe driving, good info. The timing for the day was perfect--not too rushed, not too long. We felt we had good time to see/do what we had wanted.

I drove with Mo. He was excellent. Good driver, very careful and very knowledgeable on Johannesburg history, especially Sueto and the history of apartide. We visited Sueto and the museums on apertide. It was an eye opener and made me as a Canadian understand wh an upheaval S Africa went through ridding its self of apartide.
Again thanks Mo, job well done
