About
Situated within the Gold Reef City complex, the Apartheid Museum takes visitors into the dark heart of South Africa’s past. Opened in 2001, this one-of-a-kind museum documents the rise and fall of Apartheid. Exhibits including film footage, photographs and artefacts take visitors on a dramatic and emotionally charged journey from devastating racial segregation to the liberation of the oppressed. Discover how South Africa has shed the tyranny of its past and created a future as bright as the African sun itself.

Perfectly curated itinerary for overview of the area
An awesome day spent with Mo who explained so much historical events and political messages and activities…. It was excellent dialogue and entertainment along with moving visual stops perfectly curated for our group. Highly recommend for big picture and just enough detail to believe you can understand the people and culture some.

Our guide, first of all, was informed and interesting. The places we toured were at times beautiful, sad, interesting, fun. I wouldn’t have missed this for the world!

        South Africa from a wheelchair
Mo has been my tour guide for the past 2 days. Amongst other places we did the Cradle of Humankind, Soweto, the Lesedi Cultural Village, the KIP program and a Johannesburg tour. Mo was exceptional. Engaging, friendly, respectful and most of all knowledgeable and passionate at each and every stage. I use a wheelchair for mobility and Mo pushed me around both days. He treated me like a princess. Would have no hesitation in recommending Mo. Thank you. I learnt so much from him

Splendid experience! Highly recommend if you have a day and want a overview of J’Burg.
The accommodation was amazing. We decided to spend the few extra bucks to do a private tour and it was completely worth it.

Awesome… won’t be disappointed!!! First class!
We had an amazing trip! Traveled with my 79 year old mom and this company is first class and everything was perfect. Highly recommended. Great staff, knowledgeable, attentive, felt very safe and very educational. I also hired them to pick us up at the airport and take us back. There were on time, helped with bags and very good vehicles and safe driving! Also their communication via email and also WhatsApp was always returned very timely. Again definitely give them your business! You will not be dissatisfied! One of the best oversees companies I have used on my travel! Thanks again for an unbelievable trip!

        Pretoria exposed
I so loved the Joberg & Soweto tour I booked a tour with this company again. I was fortunate to get Tsholo again on a private tour and we explored Pretoria. This was the story before the creation of Joberg and it pulled the day before history together. I was 100% in great hands and listened to the amazing story of how two republics became South Africa.

        Memories to last a lifetime.
What a well run and extremely informative tour. Our guide Tsholo made sure we understood the symbolism behind each piece of both johannsberg and Soweto. The pace was perfect and included lunch was delicious! Soweto experienced is one I’ll remember for a lifetime. Couldn’t recommend this company more.

        Amazing, Must-do tour of Johannesburg
My wife and I were lucky enough to have done a tour in April 2024 with Mo and it was a fantastic experience. It was of course, a very comfortable, smooth trip, we were very well looked after. Mo was totally comprehensive, and gave us a good sense of this amazing city. Mo was charastmatic, and deeply knowledgeable and considered. He had an acute understanding of profound topics involving the city, history, politics, and sociology. He was very approachable, and passionate in sharing his knowledge which is exactly what you want when you want to get to know the deeper parts of a city. It was a very refreshing experience, and fantastic to do with someone from the area like Mo. Honestly a must-do experience for any trip to South Africa, it was eye-opening and critical I think to be able to better understand the city and country. You will be sorely missing this tour if you decide to not visit Johannesburg, and see only other cities. An amazing guide, tour, and of course such a pleasure see this extrodinary city!

        Thank you Stephenson Adventures!
We had two days off during a work trip to South Africa and wanted to make the most of them. Stephenson Adventures helped us to do just that! We did a one day Joburg and Soweto Tour and a one day Pilanesberg Safari. Both were amazing days. We learned and experienced so much and our guides were both knowledgeable, professional, and fun. I will definitely call on Stephenson Adventures again!

        A Packed Day Seeing Johannesburg
Our guide, Banele, picked up on time at our hotel in Johannesburg. We are a family of 4, 2 in our 50’s and 2 in our 20’s. We were the only ones on our tour in a clean van. Our 21-year-old was not thrilled at the thought of a full day tour, but even she felt like it was a great day learning about Nelson Mandela and Apartheid and seeing the city. Our guide was so knowledgeable and was a great driver even when negotiating heavy traffic without stoplights working at times. We always felt completely safe with him. He told us about the history of Joburg as we drove and gave us an overview before each stop. He took care of getting all the entry tickets. We had separate site guides at the Old Fort Jail and the Mandela House in Soweto. Banele walked us through the low-class part of Soweto, and we again felt completely safe. He had lived there previously and knew the people there. Getting to step inside a woman’s tiny home was a highlight of the day. Banele was very organized and was always waiting for us right where he said he would be when we he gave us time to explore at our own pace at a couple of stops. He spoke excellent English and was easy to understand. He also took us to a nice local restaurant that served an African cuisine buffet which we enjoyed (at your own cost). Banele did not volunteer his life story to us but when we asked questions, it was so inspiring to hear his story. We felt like seeing the good and bad parts of the city and learning more about the history of Nelson Mandela and the history of Apartheid were very important in making a visit to South Africa. We also saw how we all have the same hopes and dreams for our children even when we live in very different. circumstances. We highly recommend others spend a day on this tour!

The apartheid museum was an incredibly worthwhile stop on our layover in Johannesburg. The museum is an incredible way to gain insight into the conditions most South Africans faced during apartheid. It’s certainly not an easy place to visit, but it’s necessary in gaining an understanding of South African history and culture. We could’ve spent a full day there; there’s a lot to see and to process.

Our guide/driver was great—the level of insight he added to our experience was invaluable. It was great to hear gain insight and information from a local expert. We had people in our group who moved quickly and others who moved slowly, but he didn’t mind repeating the information so that everyone had the same experience.

I drove with Mo. He was excellent. Good driver, very careful and very knowledgeable on Johannesburg history, especially Sueto and the history of apartide. We visited Sueto and the museums on apertide. It was an eye opener and made me as a Canadian understand wh an upheaval S Africa went through ridding its self of apartide.
Again thanks Mo, job well done
