About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- jjlove250 contributionsNice Cultural ExperienceVery nice and comprehensive cultural experience. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting South Africa. The guide was entertaining :)Written 11 September 2024
- JYeary0 contributionsExcellent Guided Tour of Soweto and Apartheid Museum. The guide for this tour was excellent and I am sorry I don't remember his name. He provided excellent background information on all of the places we visited. I give this group a five star rating.Written 8 September 2024
- AJ-Adventurers0 contributionsCouples - go there early. Worth doing!Wilson was a great guide. He was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the knowledge he shared. We started at 9 which is highly recommended because bus loads of kids start arriving at 9:45. The site is well laid out and very informative. Wilson repeated facts for us that helped reinforced the relationships and time frame. The boat ride was a bit hokey, but I’m sure kids enjoyed it based on the screams we heard. The interactive section was also well done. I highly recommend the museum but couples should do it when kids haven’t overtaken it.Written 7 September 2024
- 970carola0 contributionsTour increases knowledge of South AfricaWe booked our tour with Philippians 4 four and our guide Tempo was excellent. He picked us up at our hotel right on time and shared with us a lot of South African history as we drove to the Apartheid museum. The Apartheid Museum was amazing and our knowledge base regarding Apartheid increased by 150%. It is a must see. Then on to Soweta, the area where Blacks were pushed to live during Apartheid, We learned about the Soweto Uprising, toured the Nelson Mandela house, learned about Hector Pietersen and how his death impacted continued violence and visited his well-planned memorial. We visited Vilakazi Street where two Nobel Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, lived. We stopped for a buffet lunch of South African food. This tour is a must see.Written 7 September 2024
- OJBO0 contributionsThe best way to spend a half dayExcellent introduction to the history and life of South Africa. It’s was great to visit Soweto and Mandela House. The commentary about the history of the country and the memorials was particularly moving. The Apartheid Museum was very well done. Powerful and interesting in equal measure - even for my 18 year old. A great half day, punctual, comfortable and great guide.Written 4 September 2024
- Alekstka0 contributionsGlimpse of SA history and sowetoGreat way to spend half a day, a must see apartheid museum to get the history highlights and then immersive yourself in the Soweto with all its hardships and vibrant street where Mandela and Tutu lived. All with good guide and comfortable carWritten 2 September 2024
- Martin R0 contributionsGreat half day tripWonderful tour. Nahti our guide was knowledgeable and adjusted to the level of interest of the group. Felt safe and well taken care the entire time. A very impressive travel back and important to remember the South African history. The tour was planned for half a day and turned out to be 5.5 hours. Plan a bit more time if you select the morning tour.Written 2 September 2024

- gabriellew6350 contributionsA necessary experienceThis was a really shocking exposure to the horrors black Africans have had to endure. I felt ashamed to be white and often wanted to cry. A very necessary experience so we never repeat the same atrocities! Our guide was wonderful, flawless English and so very knowledgeable. The tour operator, Solly went beyond helpful to ensure I got back to my hotel in time for my airport pick-up. A huge thank you!!Written 8 August 2024
- Gabrielle W0 contributionsAnimals galore!A fabulous day! A pleasant drive out of Johannesburg with a driver, Bobo, who could tell me lots about the villages and mines we passed. At Pilanesberg, it was into an open truck, with 2 others and the animal sightings began almost immediately. A male and female lion beside the road were a thrill as were elephants crossing the road only 2 or 3 meters away and a rhino pooping right beside out truck were amazing. The lunch stop was great, right beside a waterhole with lots of 4 legged visitors and the food was delicious. A wonderful day!Written 6 August 2024

- 744barbd0 contributions5+ star tour - look no furtherAbsolutely fantastic tour! Great communication pre tour, our guide was amazing, so informative! Picked up 8.30am, dropped off 2pm, great value for money, great vehicle, lots of information, Soweto was fascinating and vibrant! The star of the show was the Apartheid Museum, we thought 2 hours may be too much, but we could have spent a day there. The most humbling experience, absolutely a must do, if you visit SA! Tabel, our guide was outstanding, 5 stars! Thank you for providing this experience, it was very special to understand SA history - so much hope ✊️🇿🇦❤️Written 31 July 2024

I was a bit disappointed with this tour, since we were not able to cover all the sights included in a proper way. At Constitution hill we arrived late and the public tour had already started: the group was huge and wasn't easy to hear what the guide was explaining. Later our own guide added some more infos but again, group was big and he wasn't waiting for everybody to be gathered, so a lot was missed. Lunch was not included but we were guided in a place where it was a bit expensive and we had not even a whole hour in the Apartheid museum (that would need at least 2 hrs and as it was stated in the tour schedule online). I was picked up at about 10am, probably starting a bit earlier would have allowed to see things properly. Not recommended.

Hello Leery, we are very sorry that we didn't meet your needs.
But my surprise is that out of 12 people that we carry that day why only you write negative review?
1. A place for lunch ( Restaurants)we never force anyone to eat food there, the reason why our company normally take our clients there to eat is because we want you to have taste of South Africa local dishes (Buffet) and if you say no we will not force you moreover this tour is not included with lunch. And since we introduced this our clients 99% of our clients are very happy because tourists come to another country want to have different taste.
2. Concerns Constitutional hill, our driver(your guide) complaints that you didn't comply, but my question now is that how can you hear your guide when your guide is talking or guiding you and you stand about about 20meter away from him?
3. Yes Apartheid museum is about 2hours inside but you were there 1hr :50mins.
A lot to do in one day but we make sure we cover many groups which many companies don't do.
We make sure we pick you up from your hotel and drop you off at your hotel after the tour.
Always we offer our best to all our clients but unfortunately you was expecting this tour to be a private tour when you didn't book for private. Immediately when our guide picked you up and he told you that this tour is not a private tour you failed to comply and you began to show attitude to your guide. You totally wrong for this review. You didn't get experience of what you suppose to have due to you didn't comply. Anyway thanks

Solly is a wonderful character who has such knowledge of the areas you visit. He picked us up from our hotel at the exact time he said he would and his vehicle is spotlessly clean with the offer of sanitiser and fresh water. We were taken to several interesting places including constitutional hill, mandela house, ghandi square and the hector peterson memorial. Lunch was included in a restaurant in Soweto which was exceptionally good. Solly was flexible in that at our request to see the cooling tours in Soweto he gladly did a small detour. We learnt so much from him and i would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone coming to Johannesburg and wanting a great guide.

Solly was a great guide - I can feel that he was somewhat respected in the community and in the places that he brought us to, which was why we felt safe throughout. He was also knowledgeable across many topics, and was willing to answer any questions regardless the sensitivity. He also went out of his way to drop us at a separate destination on our return trip back to the hotel (thanks for going above & beyond). I certainly hope his business continues to grow and that he continues to provide top service to his guests.
Apart from the Soweto Tour, we also went for the Cradle of Humankind tour with Solly on Day 2. That was average in our opinion, but in no case it was Solly's fault at all. The Museum felt like it was targeted at kids, while the cave was ok.

We did a private day tour of Johannesburg with Clement and it was amazing! Clement was very knowledgeable and we learned so much about Johannesburg, Soweto, and the apartheid era. Clement shared that he grew up in Soweto, which explains how he knows so much about the area! He was also very professional throughout the day.
We did Constitution Hill, Soweto, the Nelson Mandela House, the Hector Pieterson Memorial (just the lawn), and the apartheid museum. We also had a typical South African lunch in Soweto. Somehow Clement got us to all the spots and kept us on schedule. If you don't have much time in Johannesburg, I really recommend doing this tour and booking it as a private tour. That way you can be more flexible with timing.

Great tour that hits the highlights of Johannesburg. Really enjoyed it and the commentary about the history of South Africa. Solly took great care to ensure we were OK and, apart from the Apartheid Museum, which is a self guided tour was always around and provided a comforting presence.

The tour guide was good, but the whole trip was overcharged. There was nothing that you could not do with the hop on hop off experience, which cost a fraction of the money paid. The tour guide just left us outside the Apartheid museum and we had to have the tour ourself.

Solly was an excellent tour leader and covered a lot of ground in our Jo’burg Soweto tour. Constitution Hill, Top of Africa, Apartheid Museum, Soweto, Mandela House and Hector Pietersen Memorial. Solly was particularly passionate about the 1976 Soweto protests, but overall well informed and adept at importing his knowledge to us. I felt we could have spent more time than 2 hours at Apartheid Museum, but considering all that we did cover, our time had to be somewhat limited.

It was nice to travel on a coach with real ac in load-shedding Joburg. Clement was our driver and guide, but feel like he had too much to do alone. He tried his best for sure but there are some down sides. We had 1h45m at the Apartheid Museum and I was rushing to come out sharp, but Clement was 15 mins late because he had to pick up 2 other guests who were to join us half way. We didn't have lunch until past 2:30pm so bring snacks, and it was a bit pricey by Joberg standard (R250). We did not visit the Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial or Joburg CBD, so just be ready that it might not be possible to see everything that was listed on the agenda. I would still have done this just want to share more info for those who would like to feel more well-informed.

The most rewarding parts of the tour are Prison 4 and Constitutional Court and the Apartheid Museum. We would have like longer at the museum, as it is so rich with information and documentation of historical events - in OUR times. (I think a shorter time in the tallest building in Johannesburg could offset this.) Of course also seeing Nelson Mandela's modest home in Soweto is amazing (despite those taking selfies). So much history and culture to cram into a day, but generally well planned.

Solly is a total pro. He was communicative, knowledgable, and most importantly, fun.
I think what most tourists want is someone who knows the history of the region and someone who will help them sidestep tourist traps. This can be very challenging in most places, but not with Solly and his team. They know the area because they've lived there and seen the history themselves. They also know that culturally, most tourists need a LOT of information about the agenda for the day in order to feel comfortable. This was one of the areas I really feel that Solly and his team stand out.
Finally, when you're spending and entire day (or two full days like we did) with someone, it really makes a difference when they treat you like a human being and not just a customer.
Solly and Phillipians 4 Four get perfect marks.
I would 10/10 use this service again and I would absolutely recommend it to others.
