Immersive and Introspective Tour of Soweto Township
Mar 2020
I took 22 future educators to South Africa to experience the people, practices, and culture of this foreign country. From the onset of planning, the staff of MoAfrika were very communicative with me via both email and WhatsApp to structure the perfect day that aligned with the learning objectives our study abroad group was trying to accomplish. Their staff even helped to set up three school visits in Soweto so that our students were able to see education in action and help draw distinctions between the U.S. system and those in place in Johannesburg. This was an "above and beyond" service that really set this tour company apart. They were willing to do EVERYTHING they could to make sure our experience was the trip of a lifetime.

The Soweto portion of the trip was well organized and we arrived and met our tour guide who lived in the township for a real-life view of the structure (literal and figurative) of the township. The guide was personable and engaged our students with members of his community that allowed for real and authentic interactions that did not feel staged or forced. This experience allowed our group to gain both perspective and appreciation for the day-to-day lives of the people of the Soweto community.

Our perspectives were then enhanced at one of the best museums I have ever visited in my life. The Apartheid Museum is simply something that MUST be experienced by everyone who visits Johannesburg. Our students were engaged in all of the exhibits and museum experiences - so make sure you give yourself several hours to take everything in. The MoAfrika staff allowed us to explore this at our leisure and had a very clear meeting plan in place for when our tour time was up (and we stayed all the way to the end of the day and closed the museum down).

This full day tour is one you will NOT forget and an experience that enhanced our trip to South Africa in a transformative way.

Our experience was made even more enjoyable by MoAfrika tours, whose staff and guides delivered an impeccable day that was customizable to our large group but yet personalized to make it feel more meaningful.

HIGHLY recommend this tour and tour company

Dear Dr Jay, Thank you for taking a moment to share your experience with us at MoAfrika Tours, by writing a glowing review about your tour to Soweto. We have tried to incorporate as many aspects as possible, and we are glad to hear that everything worked out. The Apartheid Museum is huge, and can even take an entire day to explore. We look forward to having you back on tour with us soon! Best regards, Michelle

All day tour...not so much
Feb 2020 • Couples
The tour was good but the time spent could have been better used. As others have said, would have preferred more time at the museum and less time at the pre-arranged shopping spots. It was also fewer hours than advertised.

Hi there, Thank you for posting your review. We try and fit as much into a day as possible, so its not always ideal to spend more than 2 hours at the museum. This tour is designed for people who only have a day to see and experience Soweto. Please take note that we include traveling time in the tours advertised times. Best regards, Michelle

I highly recommend this tour. They will pick you up, which is great when you don't know your way around. Our tour guide was friendly and informative. We even got a fantastic lunch that was fantastic! The Apartheid Museum was a real eye opener as well.

Best Soweto Tour Ever
Feb 2020
I've done Soweto tours 3x, and this was the best one yet. Our guide Thaobang was absolutely awesome; so knowledgeable about the area, and apartheid history. We saw all classes in Soweto, which makes one see there's progress that has been made since Apartheid ended, but also so much more that needs to be done. If you go to Soweto, please book with MoAfrika, because they aren't conducting "poverty tours" they actually give back to the community, by way of donations to those in the informal settlements. As I understand it, for every person who goes on the tour, 50 rand is donated to the community. My favorite part was seeing the preschool in the informal settlement, though I hope the kids aren't being used as props and I hope we weren't intruding on their school lessons. Lunch at the towers was delicious. And Apartheid Museum, as always is a must, it's something any and all tourists should go through to fully understand the fight for freedom. My only suggestion would be I wish we had more time there, and perhaps skip the Hector museum, for more time at Apartheid Museum.

Hi there, Thank you for posting your positive review about your visit to Soweto. Our team here at MoAfrika Tours is committed to providing high-quality customer service, and we’re thrilled to hear that we made a good impression on you. You are correct about the donation to the community. We try our best to educate people, and also to give back as much as possible. The children always come first, and we feel strongly about not using them in any way. This is why we give back as much as we can. We hope you’ll be on tour with us again soon! Best regards, Michelle

A great way to see Soweto
Feb 2020 • Couples
Michael was a fantastic tour guide through Soweto. Seeing the different parts was informative and knowing that MoAfrika supports the local community with outreach projects is wonderful. The lunch was tasty too! The Apartheid Museum is very large and history buffs should probably come back to experience it in depth.

Good but Apartheid Museum tour shd be Guided
Feb 2020
This was a very good, very informative and very comfortable experience. Co-tourists were good company. Stanley was great - punctual, informative and jovial. The food was tasty and the ambience was great - tho' none in our party was brave enough for the bungee jump! Thando in Soweto was also very sweet.

I only wish we had been guided through the highlights of the Apartheid Museum instead of being left to wander through its vastness in the short period of time we had left - that would also have prevented having to wait for others who didn't exit at the agreed time.

Overall, great tour and cool guide but I'd ask if the Apartheid Museum part would be guided before I recommend to others.

Hi there, Thank you for posting your positive review about your time with Stanley. Unfortunately, our guides are not allowed to guide you through the Apartheid Museum. It can be a big museum with a lot of interesting pieces of information, and we can only ask our guests to manage their time wisely in the museum. Nonetheless, we’re thrilled to hear that you had a great time on your Soweto Tour and we hope you’ll join us again soon! Best regards, Michelle

Full day tour
Jan 2020 • Couples
The morning session to Soweto extended to nearly 2 pm which left very little time for the museum. Museum needs one day to explore to take in everything. It's better to do Soweto in half a day with the tour company and leave museum for another full day independently.

Hi there Udaya, Thank you for taking a moment to share your experience with us at MoAfrika Tours. The Apartheid Museum is big, and is filled with a lot of information. The Museum enthusiasts should have a full day to experience this, but not everyone finds it amusing, which is why we only allocate a certain time on this. We look forward to having you back on tour with us again soon! Best regards, Michelle
