Overview
Tucked away in the foothills of Arenal Volcano, the Don Olivo Chocolate farm shows you the chocolate production process from pod to final product—a sweet treat made better on a guided tour that includes chocolate samples and private transportation from La Fortuna. Gain insight into the chocolate making process right from the source, in addition to learning about other crops like sugarcane, papaya, and vanilla bean on a family-owned farm.
What to Expect
Your tour begins with pickup from central La Fortuna. Drive through scenic countryside en route to the Don Olivo Chocolate farm, a family-owned operation in the foothills of Arenal Volcano.

First, learn about common crops and medicinal plants like papaya, black pepper, and vanilla bean. Sample seasonal fruits as your guide tells you about how the plants are grown and used.

Then, make sugar cane juice by hand while learning about the production of sugar from plant to final product. Sample the sticky sweet liquid, sugar nuggets, and a liquor made from the sugar cane grown onsite.

Finally, continue to the chocolate tour. Walk through trails around the plantation to learn how the cocoa pods are grown, harvested, fermented, and processed into the smooth final product. Your tour concludes with samples of chocolate products like hot chocolate and brownies with the opportunity to purchase some to take home.

I highly recommend this tour! A ride was provided for us to and from this family-run farm. Mauricio, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable, energetic, and personable. The tour was interactive and had people pressing sugar cane (especially any children that were on the tour). Lots...More

Yum to the 10th

We picked this tour because it was a family run business - and why not support local businesses. From the start Mauricio obviously knew his father's farm. Every time we turned around there was dad with a machete chopping up a mango, pineapple, guanabana, papaya,...More

The best thing we did in Costa Rica

I absolutely loved this tour. The tour group was small, the guide (Mauricio) was fun, knowledgeable, and relaxed, and the farm is a fruit-forest dream. Lots of samples of tropical fruits (pineapple, guava, etc), sugar cane juice, candy, chocolate, and hot chocolate. Bring a camera,...More
