What to expect
Meet a driver at your downtown La Fortuna hotel for a morning departure, then make the trip to Los Chiles, a small village close to the Nicaraguan border. Upon arrival in Los Chiles, transfer to a motorboat to explore the wetlands, which are fed by the Río Frío. Keep your eyes on the water throughout the tour, as caimans, fish, and even freshwater sharks can be spotted in the river. Or, if you'd like, you can opt for a canoe or kayak to explore; contact the supplier after booking. White-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, and spider monkeys forage in the treetops, and the reserve is also an important stop for thousands of migratory birds that spend the winter in Caño Negro’s warm, shallow waters. Pause along the river for a lunch of authentic Costa Rican cuisine, then head back to Los Chiles, watching for wildlife along the way.  This tour concludes with return transfer to La Fortuna, and drop-off at your hotel in mid-afternoon.

    Cano Negro
    Stop: 4 hours
The biodiversity of this site has attracted the attention of tourists and conservationists for more than 35 years. Due to its importance as a source of food and nesting, it is one of the best places in Costa Rica for bird watching. Our tour begins by embarking in Guatuso, a rural town, from where we navigate the riverbed to the Caño Negro Refuge, where an experienced guide will show you various species such as: sloths, three types of monkeys, caimans, lizards, bats, birds and a variety of flora typical of wetlands. At the end of this profitable boat safari tour, our last stop will be at the house of Don Abelino and Doña Wendy where we will share a traditional lunch in order to learn more about the culture and especially the Costa Rican gastronomy.

What a day with a wonderful staff taking care of us!
Mar 2021
Arranged a "cruise" through Jacamar for a last-minute trip to Costa Rica and were THRILLED with our day. Even though tourism has started returning to Costa Rica, when our guide, Jose Pablo (JP) picked us up at our hotel, we found that it was JUST us! JP took us on an unbelievable day. Within minutes, he knew that we enjoyed birding so as soon as he cleared La Fortuna on our drive, we were making frequent stops as he saw birds for us to add to our list (and his identification of them was 100% accurate!). The base camp where we met up with our "crew" and ate along the Rio Frio was excellent. Wendy and her family were VERY welcoming and hospitable and the facilities were very clean and comfortable (NOTE - their English was a bit limited but wasn't an issue at all as JP helped out in the few cases where it was an issue). The cruise itself was fantastic. Granted, we stayed on the Rio Frio and never quite made it to Cano Negro, but this was NOT an issue. We still saw all of the animals we expected and it was a beautiful day.

If JP is indicative of the guides that Jacamar uses, then they are well-run! He was exactly what I look for in a guide in that his knowledge was excellent, had a great sense of humor to keep us entertained on the drive, was VERY passionate about what he was sharing with us and tweaked what we were doing to adjust to what his clients were obviously interested in doing.

The ONLY thing that was a downer was the boat. Not that is was uncomfortable or anything but that it wasn't covered and based on ALL of the pictures we had seen this is what we expected. In some ways, not having a cover on the boat was MUCH better for viewing the birds, but as my wife is VERY fair-skinned, it would have been helpful if we had been notified prior to the cruise that because it was the only the two of us, they were using a smaller boat and would not be covered. This way we could have planned accordingly. Not an issue in the big picture but it is something that can easily be addressed by Jacamar.

Bottom line, we were THRILLED with our day, our guide and the experience and heartily recommend them if you are looking to go!

Loved the Cano Negro Tour!
Mar 2021
I highly recommend this tour which was loved by the entire family. We had an incredible guide named Jose who was extremely knowledgeable and really made it fun for everyone. We saw many types of monkeys, a vast array of birds, and a couple of sloths as well. On the boat it seemed like there was always something coming out of the jungle or in the river for us to see. The excellent day was topped off by a great local lunch on our way back home. On our way back to our hotel Jose spotted a sloth upside down and eating which was a perfect ending to the day! Great tour, great guide, and a great company to deal with.

What a Great Day at Cano Negro
Feb 2020
Jacamar Tours provided us with a very special day at Cano Negro. Jairo was both our driver and guide, and he did an outstanding job explaining the overall habitat to us. He had great knowledge about each of the species we saw, and was able to answer our questions clearly and with good humor. We were able to see quite a lot including white-faced monkeys, crocodiles, caymen, and many different bird species, as both Jairo and our boat driver know this area quite well. They used their scopes to help us take photos we never could have taken on our own. The 2.5 hour boat ride was calm and peaceful, so even if there was no immediate sighting the ride and scenery were quite different and enjoyable. We stopped at a family home for both a quick breakfast and a delicious lunch. On the drives to and from, Jairo was able to share stories of local life, farming techniques and wildlife migration in the area. We were back at Nayara Gardens right on schedule, filled with great information and memories.

Excellent Tour Overall
Dec 2019
My wife and I booked this excursion through our resort at Nayara. Jacamar Tours picked us up on time at the resort. We had booked a "group tour" (much less expensive than a private tour), but it turned out that there was only one other couple on the tour, so it was almost private.

The drive to Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge took nearly three hours and was a bit unnerving. Our driver, 'Johnny', drove very fast, passing nearly every vehicle in his way. It was not the relaxing drive through the area that we had hoped to enjoy. Johnny did seem like a very nice guy, but he really needs to slow down a bit and realize the passengers are not in a big hurry and would rather travel at a more reasonable pace to be safe and to take in the awesome views of Costa Rica.

The trip on the Rio Frio river in Cano Negro was awesome! We toured a very scenic and uncrowded stretch of the river for about 2-2.5 hours. (During all that time, we saw only one other boat- a local fisherman.) We saw lots of birds and animals: howler, spider and white face monkeys, and various reptiles such as iguanas, caimans, crocodiles, Jesus Christ lizards and turtles. The boat captain, our guide Alan, and our trainee-guide Jason, were all excellent. They were knowledgeable, friendly, and informative along the entire river tour.

When we finished the river tour, there was an incredible and authentic Costa Rican lunch waiting for us at the home of the boat captain and his wife. The food was delicious and we genuinely appreciated the hospitality provided by the family.

Our drive home, with Johnny at the wheel, was once again a nail-biting experience. In addition to the excessive speed and his passing every vehicle along the way, he had an animated conversation with Alan with both of his hands frequently off of the steering wheel. It somewhat marred what was otherwise an exceptional experience with Jacamar.

Still, a highly recommended tour. Just ask for a different driver.

Unique and charming experience
Aug 2019
Allan was our guide and, like all of our Jacamar guides, he arrived on time, knew exactly what we were doing, and had lots of knowledge to share. It’s a drive from la Fortuna to Cano Negro, but our car was comfortable, the road good, and Allan was a good conversationalist.

As we approached cano negro, he spotted a three toed sloth in a tree so he pulled over and got out a high power scope so we could see greater detail. Amazing and the day kept getting better. We arrived at a local family’s house and were served refreshments before we got on the covered boat. At first I wasn’t sure about meeting the family but they were so welcoming and the food was delicious (bathrooms were clean!j that I realized this was a unique cultural experience that really showed us pura vida.

The boat ride was comfortable and relaxing because it was so peaceful on the river. Our tour took us on a part of the river that didn’t have any other tourists. We saw howler monkeys and white faced monkeys, numerous bird species including the American Pygmy kingfisher, caiman, Jesus Christ lizard, iguanas and giant crocodiles!

Allan was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna, but didn’t overwhelm us either which was nice. They always stopped the boat to make sure we could see the animals. After we were done with the ride, we went back to the house and ate a delicious lunch prepared for us. It was a huge meal and very delicious!

My husband and I went with our 9 year daughter. We highly recommend this tour. The covered boat was nice because it protected us from the sun! While there are no guarantees about seeing wildlife, we were amazed at how much we saw on this trip! It’s memorable!

SO AWESOME! Highlight of Costa Rica trip
Jul 2019 • Friends
This Cano Negro River Cruise was part of our Caravan tour and part of my FAVORITE DAY in Costa Rica. The captain was excellent at spotting wildlife including SLOTH, lizards that walk on water to escape predators which we had the privilege to watch LIVE, troops of monkeys, and lots of birds.
SIT on the same side as the the Captain for best viewing.
The town of Los Chiles is quaint, not touristy. We shopped in the local grocery store. This town would be a great place to stay overnight for the frugal traveler.

Well done, Captain!
Apr 2019 • Couples
This was an awesome trip in which we saw a lot! Elena was a fun, interesting, knowledgeable guide with a great eye. The boat captain was able to move the boat quite close to animals without disturbing them. To see tiger herons and boat billed herons, so beautiful! The caimans were “smiling “ at us. We observed different monkeys. It was worth the long ride from La Fortuna. Just amazing.

This was a great trip. We saw all the wildlife we could have wanted and Bernardo was a terrific guide. We were lucky enough to see a green Macaw. The lunch with a typical Costa Rican family was delicious. It was a fabulous day all the way around.

Wonderful guide and great wildlife viewing!
Feb 2019 • Couples
Our guide Alonzo was amazing. He spotted so much wildlife that we would never have seen otherwise. He also knew most everything about the animals and the flowers we were seeing. The family we visited were great hosts and after our river excursion we were served one of the best meals we had while in CR. We saw lots of Caimans, monkeys, all kinds of birds, even saw 2 Keel Billed Toucans that were spectacular. If you want to see Costa Rica wildlife and experience the local culture, this trip is for you.
