About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- PaulSandmann0 contributionsA once-in-a-lifetime encounterKyoto - the home of tea ceremony - is undoubtedly the place to enjoy a traditional tea ceremony. At Juan they have the wonderful motto „ichigo ichie“ meaning a once in a lifetime encounter, just as when the planets align. This motto you feel in the peacefulness and respect with which the tea ceremony is conducted. We learned a lot and can very much recommend this experience for you and your partner. It creates a shared experience of the depth of Japanese culture to bring home.Written 24 July 2024
- wwtara0 contributionsAwesome and authentic experience!I can't recommend this enough! The experience was for a small group and did a great job walking through history and customs, showing a demonstration, including a hands on portion, and answering any additional questions. I loved the layout of the course and it was well worth the time! This helped deepen our appreciation for tea culture and also allowed us to comfortable partake in tea later in our trip as well.Written 16 April 2024
- MargaretL6520 contributionsNot my first choice for an authentic tea ceremonyThe hosts could not have been more gracious, and they nicely explained basic aspects of the tea ceremony, but the room was a bit shabby. It was not the best example of the aesthetics of cha-do.Written 23 March 2024
- marne160 contributions5 starsReally good and fun. I took my kids and they loved it. They gave you little snacks. You got to make the tea too. Very nice. Really good for 7 and up. You have to be respectful but I took my 9 and 12 kids and they loved it.Written 3 August 2023
- 868marijad0 contributionsWonderful learning experienceThe hostess was so gracious and knowledgeable. It was my first time at a tea ceremony and i have to say the history behind it was magnificent. Great activity for family, friends or couples.Written 21 July 2023

- FloLyTeam0 contributionsWonderful lesson with MakiWe booked a tea ceremony group lesson that lasted a bit over an hour with Maki. She is very kind and speaks English extremely well. We learned how to prepare matcha tea for an informal ceremony and we tried some sweets. It was a very interesting experience and we definitely recommend it to everyone who visits Kyoto.Written 27 May 2023
- aerreerre0 contributionsShort, relatively expensive, but well organised, good value. We did a group ceremony with 7 other strangers. the experience is relatively expensive but nice - for sure, we were able to appreciate the importance of Tea Ceremonies without having to endure a full 4 hours event. All things considered, it was money well spent.Written 24 April 2023

We had a great experience at this traditional event-the tea ceremony.
Focus and respect the ceremony, I remember our tea master quote:
"Don’t worry, don’t rush: stop and smell the flowers."
Besides, it is highly recommended that you choose a kimono package as you can take photos during the session. Wearing traditional costume while learning traditional tea ceremony may be a merit point.

Ju-an tea room is set in a beautiful garden with a koi pond and the person performing the ceremony spoke good English.
The location is slightly difficult to find as it's sort of down an alley/small street and is walled-in, so is not obvious. Look for the green signs! (See my photos). Due to this, allow plenty of time and arrive early. We arrived to the area early by subway with enough time to quickly visit the nearby Higashihonganji Temple, (by ourselves) perhaps a 5 minute walk away.
At the teahouse, we were greeted by 'Marcy' who welcomed us in. Marcy, dressed in a traditional kimono, spoke English well (having spent time in Seattle) and proceeded to tell us about the 3 parts of the tea ceremony workshop that we would momentarily experience.
Marcy first talked about the history and tradition surrounding the ceremony, then showed us how it's performed and finally allowed us to perform it and drink the tea and Japanese 'sweets' that were provided. In case you're wondering what kind of tea you'll be making, it's green matcha tea, which is unlike the clear green tea you might make with a teabag, it's more of a frothy opaque green tea made with a high quality matcha powder and bamboo whisk.
As we sat in silence watching Marcy perform the tea ceremony, it was mesmerizing and fascinating. It's more than just making a cup of tea, the ceremony is shrouded in deep tradition and almost has a meditational quality to it. Then it was our turn! We managed to do OK and then enjoyed sipping the tea from the traditional bowls while we chatted a little.
After Marcy took our photo for our workshop certificate (e-mailed to you at a later date), we said our goodbyes and took a few moments to admire the garden and koi pond. The ceremony was about 50 minutes. Another group was outside waiting when we left.
Our only regret is that we didn't purchase the Matcha Tea Starter Kit that was on display outside the tea room as it seemed like it was a pretty good deal. I would suggest they promote this!
The certificate was e-mailed to us a few weeks later with a charming letter from the owner, thanking us for coming and with more details covering the tea ceremony and what makes theirs so unique.
I recommend visiting the web site of Ju-an Tea Ceremony as it is quite informational. Since our travel agent booked this for us as part of our tour in Japan, I cannot comment on price, however it was definitely one of the the highlights and very memorable. You are allowed to take photos throughout the ceremony, however don't take so many that you detract from the moment.
General tip: While traveling in Japan, bring your own small towel to dry your hands in public restrooms as paper towels and dryers are often not provided!

We attended a private tea ceremony with Marcie. Booking was easy and she even managed to move appointments to give our family a private ceremony. It is tucked away on a side street near Kyoto Station. Location is easy but not very pretty or tranquil. Marcie has good English and does a fantastic job teaching and explaining the different aspects of a Japanese tea ceremony. We then shared a few sweets and also got to make some matcha ourselves. Good fun.

So glad we did this! Masumi explained the traditions of the tea ceremony in a way that was both fascinating and informative. Getting to make our own tea at the end was a perfect way to conclude the ceremony. A must-do in Kyoto!

Old tradition that everyone should know.
Excellent Hostess and an experience I will treasure. Adults and kids really should all go through this experience.
I will recommend it to all my clients traveling to Japan.
Ordered my own bamboo green tea wisk.

Highly recommend this tea ceremony experience.
Masumi was great- explaining the history and components of the tea ceremony, demonstrating, then us giving it a go.
The setting was beautiful as well, making it really special.

My daughter and I absolutely loved this fascinating insight into the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, our host Masumi was so welcoming and knowledgable. If you like tea, this a must-do. Since our return to London we have enjoyed making matcha green tea the way Masumi showed us, using the traditional bamboo utencils we purchased on the day. It was a unique memory in time but also one that that we can continue to enjoy.

Hi We would like to do this with our two children. Are they free or do I have to book adult tickets for them? Also can I select a specific time?
