Overview

Immerse yourself in Japanese traditions, by getting access to the countryside, with a private guide. You’ll visit smaller towns and villages that tourists don’t usually go to, and have an authentic experience of life as a local farmer. You’ll learn how to make ‘mochi’ (rice cakes) with a guide with you for commentary and translation. You’ll also visit rice fields, a shrine and learn about Japanese rituals.

What to Expect

After meeting your guide at a pre-arranged spot, you'll travel together in a taxi to Ogi village, set in the Japanese countryside. You’ll learn about the local agriculture, as you walk through the rice fields, which date back 1,300 years. Understand the importance of Shintoism to Japanese people by visiting Ogura shrine.

A highlight of the day is visiting a local rice farmer’s house. You’ll be handed a giant mallet, and take part in a mochi rice cake making lesson. As you bash steaming sticky rice, it’ll begin to form into dough for rice cakes. You’ll learn about the local way of making mochi (with fermented soy beans), and you’ll also watch some other cooking preparations too. The local farmer will make sukiyaki (a type of hot pot with meat and vegetables) and tell you about local Japanese life. The tour will end at JR Ogotoonsen station.
