Amazing trek, unforgettable experience with the best team!
I did the five day tour to the Lost City with Expotur. In one word it was unforgettable. Our guide, Jhoan, was cleary very passionate about the Ciudad Perdida and went above and beyond for our group. We learned many things, and we explored many different paths then the other groups that were present, making it extra special. Our translator Santi conveyed all the information to us in English and besides that he was the best companion we could wish for, sharing a lot of knowledge and stories himself. To complete the team there was our cook Angel, who took amazing care of us in the camps and made sure we had everything we needed. The hike through the jungle is amazing in itself and reaching the city is an amazing reward. Very special place to be. Would highly recommend!

      It was perfect
I did the 5 day trek to the lost city but it was not listed above. Our guide was Jhoan, translator Santi and cook Angel. I loved the trip. All of the above mentioned crew members were the best tour guides I could have imagined. Very knowledgable about the history and significance of the place and they told us about it from the heart. You could tell that they care about the stories behind it a lot and enjoyed being on the trip too, not only just doing their job but really really engaged with the whole experience. I felt very lucky to be in this group with Jhoan, Santi and Angel.

      Highlight of our trip
The lost city trek with Expotur was one of the highlights of our trip through Colombia. Our guide Jorge was excellent and super nice. He gave us so much information about the indigenes and the lost city and answered all our questions. He also took care of a friend, who felt sick and made sure that everyone was fine. Also our translator Andres was amazing! He was very funny and had so much energy. He motivated and entertained us during the trek. The trail was not always easy and it was super hot, but it was worth every step. You should definitely do it while in Santa Marta.

      Amazing jungle trek
We just came back from an amazing trek to the Lost City with the best team from Expotur! We spend four incredible days in the jungle and the trip was both beautiful and hard 😊 we had nights in both small and large camps and if possible to choose the small camps are by far the best! We felt very well informed and led by the team (Nelson, Juan David, Carlos and Fernando) all worked well both guides, translator and cook. Can’t recommend enough 🤩

      Lost City Trek (Expotour)
I did the 5 day trek and it was absolutely incredible! One of the best experiences of my life. It was very challenging, but so rewarding we had the best experience with Expotour and their staff. Our guide: Aleja; translator: Camilo; cook: Will Freddy are amazing at what they do and truly made this a once in a lifetime experience! I highly recommend this trek and doing it with expotour. Ask for Aleja, Camilo & Will Freddy!

      Unforgettable
We had an amazing experience. Our guide Daniel did an amazing job at telling us the history about the lost city and the area. The translator Maria made sure we could understand everything and the cook Emiro and assistant Luz made the whole journey viable. I would say it was equally hard and incredible.

Fantastic experience with a great team
My partner and I did the 5-day-trail to the Ciudad Perdida (Lost City) in December 2023. As most people had booked the 4-day-trail, we were in the lucky situation to be a very small group. There were only three of us plus our guide Dennis and the translator André. From the very beginning we were very well taken care of! FYI: the 5 day tour is the same pace as the 4 day tour, just having one additional day (different route back) to see more nature and waterfalls. Dennis has an outstanding knowledge of the Sierra Nevada, the indigenous people living there, their history and and culture and was patiently answering all our questions. Andre translated her stories and insights perfectly into English, so all of us were able to follow the conversations. Both of them are great communicators so we always knew what was on the agenda for the next day, for the next hours, when there will be food etc. They also made sure that we always had an own table for our group which was very convenient and a good meeting point for us as well as the place for our meals. It is also important to point out the both of them were always helpful, ensuring our safety, motivating us and simply were a great company and fun to spend time with. Our chef, Jamir, created amazing meals, always fresh local food with a delicious taste. If you’re a vegetarian, there is no need to worry or bring any food yourself - Jamir takes care of you! Additionally, on the stops, we were able to taste the most delicious Columbian fruits like Piñas, Papayas and Oranges and some more snacks like Banana Chips or Chocolate bars. Visiting the Ciudad Perdida has been so rewarding and a very unique experience, as well as the encounters with the indigenous people living in the area. 100% recommend the experience and doing so with Expotours, as the operator is very well organized and has a great team. Just one thing I’d improve: I would say it would be good to offer an easier option of the tour (that can be quite demanding, especially with sun & heat), e.g. having a 5 day tour with a slower pace/less hiking per day, for people who prefer a less challenging hike.

      The best hiking trip ever
Besides stunning nature and getting to the Lost City, swimming in the river every day to refresh from hiking, and learning about indigenous people, we enjoyed in the company of knowledgeable and trustful guides who made our trip great fun.

      Lost City
The 4 day hike to the Lost City was such an amazing experience for many reasons. Spending Xmas day in the forest was extra special plus the hike itself was through a very beautiful part of Colombia. Some parts were harder than others but if you are fit, or hike a lot its quite manageable over the 4 days. The accommodation and the food provided were a high standard, plus some of the accomm was next to rivers so there were plenty of opportunities for a swim, or cool down after a long day of walking. Levi and Andre the guide and translator gave lots of cultural, historical information on the Lost city, the areas we were walking through plus the hike itself. Having the 2 (plus Andres) also allowed people to walk as fast or as slow as they wanted. Their energy and passion was quite infectuous, helping the team get through the worst parts of the hike and heat. Expotur’s staff plus the people i walked with made it such a fun and memorable experience.

Absolutely the best hiking tour in Colombia
Absolutely amazing tour, feasible only thanks to dedicated guide Jose N and his team: Norbey, Samuel and Samir. Besides great time, stunning nature and incredible monuments of indigenous civilization, our guide delivered lots of data and insights to local history, especially about indigenous people, their culture and way of life.

      Unforgettable, amazing and authentic!
Where to begin?! An amazing experience, made all the better by our amazing guide, translator and cook! Dennis, Isidro and San Cocho were brilliant. So informative, so friendly and so upbeat! We are veggie and vegan and they went above and beyond to cater for us (we were full the whole time!) and we got to try some tasty traditional dishes too. They clearly have a great relationship with the indigenous people, which meant we got to learn about their cultures and traditions from all the indigenous people along the way. Thanks Dennis, Isi and San Cocho! One of the best experiences ever!!

      Hard work but brilliant
A brilliant adventure- hard work, but definitely worth it for an incredible experience. The Expotour team was great- upbeat, full of facts and always answering questions. Beware, hygiene at some of the camps is poor- take soap and Antibac hand gel everywhere. And the beds are not always the best maintained- but you’ll sleep regardless. Pack light- although there may be opportunity to jettison things you realise you didn’t need.

      Cannot recommend Expotur more
Excellent trek to Ciudad perdida, excellent guides, excellent experience. Dennis and Isidro were 10/10 we loved every moment of the trek ( maybe not but it was due to humidity and the climbing :) it was tough but worth it. Excellent experience to see the lost city almost having it for yourself. Maybe bring your own water filters, some people got sick during the trek and it could have been the filtered water in the campsites.

We hiked to the Ciudad Perdida with Expotur in the first week of December — right after the trail re-opened from 6 months of COVID related closure. There were a fraction of the normal numbers of tourists so we had a very special and personalized experience. The safety precautions taken by Expotur were excellent — everyone wore masks, were continually sanitizing their hands, and everyone on the tour had a negative COVID test. Additionally, we were required to wear masks on the trail to protect the indigenous population from possible infection (we didn't get to see the local indigenous village which is normally part of the tour). Our guide Jhoan was excellent and obviously highly experienced — he is a local to the area with a strong sense of pride in showing the best of his homeland (note: he only speaks Spanish so ask for a translator if you don't). He stayed with us on the trail across the 4 days, explaining everything thoroughly with personal stories and insights, and took care of all our needs. When we reached the Ciudad Perdida he gave us a two hour history tour of the site with lots of explanations and insights from both pre-columbian and contemporary history. We felt very lucky to have him as the other groups were just left to wander alone around the site for the most part. Additionally, I had an allergic reaction to the mosquito bites (warning: take lots of mosquito repellent, the mosquitos are savage!!) and he helped me with herbal baths and remedies that worked really well. We had been concerned about the accommodation (having read other reviews), but we found many of the huts are newly renovated and in excellent condition — you will get a mat, blanket and mosquito net. The food was ample and delicious — large servings of rice, fish, chicken, plantain, veggies and dietary needs were considered. A word on the difficulty — we've done a lot of hiking (Nepal, Patagonia, Peru, North America etc.) and found the trail itself fairly easy, but the temperature/humidity/mosquitos made it fairly challenging (several people in another group weren't particularly fit and really struggled). You'll definitely need proper hiking shoes and you'll sweat like you've never sweated before. We recommend bringing the bare minimum, hiking poles and wicking shirts (you can wash them out at night and they'll be semi-dry by morning). Overall a high enjoyable walk with lots of beautiful jungle scenery, and amazing history. Highly recommended.

Read great reviews about the Lost City tour with Exoptur so decided to book a few months ahead of our trip.
Good email communication and very helpful with any questions. Popped into the office when we arrived into Santa Marta the day before the tour to sign paperwork and pay the balance.
They arrange collection from your hotel in the morning, but we decided to walk in ourselves.
There were 2 groups of 13 which were split out, and each group kept to themselves for most of the trip.
Really good experience from initial contact all the way to the end. The guide and translator were both excellent (Dennys Higuita and Paula) and looked after the group well.
The camps were better than expected, with comfy bunks with individual mosquito nets and warm blankets.
The food was good and plentiful for breakfast, lunch & dinner. They also provided fruit at various breaks throughout the day, as well as choc/biscuit bars with lunch & dinner which you can save and use along the treks.
We felt our group were very fast so we were always at the back so we could enjoy the scenery and take photos. But this was a little disappointing as it meant we got shorter breaks as we always turned up later, but nothing that could really be done unless the guide sets a pace for the whole group to walk at.
Main things to bring: head torch, sleeping bag liner, 4 pairs trekking socks, earplugs, eye mask, refillable water bottles, swimsuit, flipflops/water shoes to walk down to rivers, mosquito reppelant, and long sleeve top and trousers for evenings.
There are lovely rivers on day 2 & 3 which were wonderful to jump in and cool off at lunch and end of day.
The Lost city on day 3 was much bigger & better than we expected. We got 3hrs there to absorb, learn history, take photos etc, and they staggered the groups really well so each group got there turn at the main sights, and could all take photos with no-one in shot.
Really recommended, but this was one of the toughest things we have ever done. We have done multiple OCR events, walking holidays in Dolomites, Nepal etc, but because of the intense heat and steep hills, this was really tough – do not underestimate it !

Excellent hike, excellent service, overall excellent 4 days!

The 4-day hike to La Ciudad Perdida is not easy but it is absolutely worth it to see the brilliantly preserved archaeological site. Expotur will take care of you over the course of the 4 days as you hike through Colombian jungle, across rivers, up and down mountains and finally up the 1,200 steps to the city itself.

The Expotur team was amazing and I can't commend them enough, they were Daviana (translator), Gabriel and Poncho (Guides) and Juan (Cook). From beginning to end they each worked tirelessly to make sure the entire group had the best possible experience.

I actually became ill during the early hours of the morning of the third day, the day we were to climb to the lost city, and I had to wait a few hours to recover. Poncho remained behind at the camp and waited for me while the rest of the group went on ahead. When I was finally ready to go Poncho and I visited the city, where he personally gave me the tour, and we then spent the rest of the day catching up with the group.

The point is the team will go out of their way to make sure you are okay and are extremely flexible, whether it is because someone is sick or for people who may be moving at a slightly slower pace than the rest of the group.

I would highly recommend Expotur and if possible the team I got for the trek!

We did this walk in the very high season in January as a family group of seven which included my 76 year old mum and 8 year old son. First and foremost, the trek is wonderful, and Expotur are amazing. We had Jhon Jairo and Daviana as our guides and Joel as our cooks, and we couldn't recommend them enough - they were amazing!
As for some specifics for travelers thinking of doing this, a few tips:
    1. This is not an easy walk. Although the distances are not that great (10-17km per day), the terrain is rugged, the heat and exposure is high on the first day, and the vertical up and down is tremendous (on Day 3 we did 1900m vertical change). My very fit mum did it but was on a limit, and our 8 year old who is very active also only just made it. Both enjoyed the challenge tremendously.
    2. You should pack as light as you can. Ample food (and good food - thanks Joel!) is provided, and you only need the water for the first few hours. All along the way there are little stalls selling gatorade, water, beer, and snacks, so you never get short of that stuff. And at all camps you can refill water with filtered barrels that are made available to everyone.
    3. It didn't rain for us, and the paths were fairly dry and so we did the whole thing in trainers. But i can only imagine the mud if it does actually rain. Most important is to wear things that dry quickly and pack light.
    4. Accomodation is basic, and a combination of hammocks (only if very full) and bunk beds in dorms. We took a sheet sleeping bag for ourselves which was a really nice detail to have. Also pack swimmers as there's ample opportunity to go in rivers.

All in all, an unforgettable experience and i highly recommend it! The Lost City itself is amazing, but the trek is just as fun. Big thanks to Jhon Jairo, Daviana and Joel for being amazing guides and really explaining a lot about Tayrona history and culture, and the logistics for food and accomodation was impeccable and seamless.
    3. The camps are pretty

The 4 day hike was a great experience and we highly can recommend Expotur.

Our local guide Jhoan could give us deep insights about the history of the region, the indigenous people, the nature and the ciudad perdida (he once lived with a shaman for several years). Also Gustavo (our translator) and Carlos did a great job. During the hike the always were courteous and had an eye on every participant (We were a nice group of 13 people). We always felt comfortable and safe. Our chef prepared great food that provided us with the energy needed for the hike.

Thanks again for the great trip and your hospitality!

Trekked to the lost city with my group the Jaguars, Jose and Jorge. Such an amazing team. Everything is very thought through, from the pickup with the jeep, all the freshly cooked meals, beds with mosquito nets, snacks along the road all days to meeting the local indigenous Cogi people, getting daily briefings on the next days' trek and of course the interesting history about the Lost City and the spanish conquestadores. Jose keeps the spirit up and keeps you going with humour and high energy. Jorge gives you all the knowledge you need and is solid company, especially if you know a little conversational spanish.
For the money aspect I would say you definitely get value for money on this tour. There's no extra fee for anything along the way, so if you don't buy snacks or souvenirs along the way you will not have any extra expences on the hike. This is really a plus, as I have experienced having to pay a lot extra than the initial cost on other tours. All in all I would highly recommend both Jose, Jorge and Expotur! Thanks a lot guys!

Couldn't have had a better experience. Our group was led by Idarle (guide), Bayron (translator) and Samir (chef). All did an amazing job and went above and beyond to maximise our experience. Idarle and Bayron gave us so much interesting information throughout the journey with history and culture lessons. Thanks to them I felt immersed in the history of Sierra Nevada (the indigenous culture, the history of the farming and coca production, the lost city, etc.). The food was incredible. I can't believe such high quality meals could be provided on a trek. I would recommend booking with Expotur (especially with Idarle and Bayron) since I feel our group actually had a better experience than groups using other companies. The whole experience was so professionally done right from start to finish it was pretty unbelievable. One of the best things I've done and thanks to the staff and everyone involved for the memories

A very well organised trip to the Lost City, the kind that you will always remember. They take their job very seriously and make sure to provide you with the best possible guides and staff so that you will have a safe and unforgettable journey to the spectacular lost city.

Our guide Jhoan made sure to always keep us safe and attended to all our needs. He was extremely kind, helpful, attentive and pleasant. He adores the area and knows so much about it, learning about the history of the mountains and the indigenous tribes through him and his personal experiences was a very informative journey.

Our translator Daviana was not only very fluent but also very bright, helpful, understanding and patient. She helped us through the trip as well.

Our cook provided us with delicious meals and healthy snacks, hygienically prepared for us.

We got to absorb the history and of course take in all the nature, in a very safe manner, since our group was very small and all the necessary Covid precautions were taken. Very important during the risky times we live in, to know that the camps are clean and the meals are prepared in a hygienic manner.

Overall totally recommend, they genuinely love what they are doing and it shows, they are experienced and they do everything to make sure that this trip is all you ever wanted.

Ok so just back from the Lost City Expotur trek. We originally planned 5 days but switched to 4 which was convenient thanks Expotur. Let's start with the positives!
The 3rd day when we all hiked up the 1200 steps was the best part of the tour. Victor our guide, Roberto our translator and Brigid our 2nd guide made the 3rd day a day to remember! Our accomodation in Camp 1 and 2 was fine.. Camp 3 considering how high was also basic but fine. All in all day 3 was the best. You get to spend a long time in the lost city and Victor explained the history well (on the 3rd day). We got a talk from on evening 3 from a local tribe leader which was brilliant. The cook Emerio cooked us some lovely meals along the way. Other positives were Fernando our translator who was practically a guide!!

Negatives - check in on the 1st day is a mess. Some people had paid others did not. We waited at the office for almost 2 hours. Also our group was disjointed while trekking. The trek felt v rushed on day 1 and 2 and our guide was nowhere to be seen at times! More information and question times along the way would have been nice ( we often listened into other groups for information)
Another negative is the itinerary and distances. I wear a km and GPS tracker it clocked 80 KM over 4 days waaaaaaayyy more than the itinerary!!! (40-50km) also the tour does not mention that you are up at 5 a.m every day. On the last day they sent a minibus up the mountain to collect us it broke down!

All in all however we had an The cook Emerio cooked us some lovely meals along the way. Other positives were Fernando our translator who was practically a guide!!. No need for a rain jacket. Bring plenty of cash you will need it for extra water, Gatorade etc along the way.
Special mention to Fernando our translator he was with the group constantly. Also Victor and Brigit who looked after older less mobile and sick member of the group.
Rating 3/5 more time for information questions and engagement with guide as well as slightly misleading itinerary let the tour down

What an amazing and challenging experience. I can’t compliment our guide Ciser enough. Such a dedicated, caring, funny, inspirational, and motivating man. He really took a lot of time to enlighten us and tell captivating stories. Wow. If you’re able to, you should ask for this guy.

Also, his assistent Robert was really great!
