Best tour i can imagine
Sep 2021 • Solo
It was really well explained by Jamer, a local who grew up there and lived through a lot with hos whole family. The restaurant they owned was lovely and we didnt felt pushed anywhere to buy anything but I still bought three paintings in a shop

Profound & Unforgettable tour!
Dec 2020
I took the English tour. I was expecting amazing grafitti and and interesting story behind them and I got that, but so much more. The history of the region was so tragic, particularly what happen to the family of my young tour guide. It was absolutely heartbreaking to hear. I fought back tears listening. We were also given messages of hope, that came from something as ubiquitous as an escalator, something that most of us in the Western world take for granted.

At some point in the tour you will visit an art gallery of local artists. PLEASE SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY AND BUY! Of the 7 of us, I was the only one to make any purchases. Some tourists do not understand the impact of this. If you are forturnate to visit such a place then you have the means to do so. I walked out with 12 different vibrant pieces for just under $30, (They take card!) If I had more time I would've gotten more! Further along the tour you'll see more art from street vendors. Take cash if you intend to buy.

A few extra tips:
-A backpack with water (and space for your purchases!)
-a poncho (it rained heavily 30 mins into our tour but the guide had tricks to keep us dry)
-limit your selfies with the artwork. Murals are meant to be appreciated and understood, not posed with to tag on IG. Not only will you lose the significance of the work, but you slow down the entire tour (hopefully you don't get rained on by the end)! Remember, face next to the piece adds zero meaning to it! The other visitors were at least good about that. (it's the under-30 crowd that you have to worry about)
-Do the tour in your native language! I am around 95% fluent in Spanish and only take Spanish tours that don't involve too much history, lest I get lost. I chose wisely doing it in English. (My Xmas lights and Guatape tours in Spanish gave me no major issues, by comparison).
-Tip the guide and his grandmother, who is gracious enough to let total strangers visit her house during a global pandemic! No excuse not to.

Amazing Tour!
Mar 2020
This tour started at the metro station where you are met by a local. Our tour guide, Jamer, was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his local community and the history of Medellin (and Communa 13). This tour is a great way to visit Communa 13, see grafitti and the escalators, while also learning about the history and culture of Communa 13. Jamer's family really does make the best Micheladas, so be sure to get one if you have the chance!

Great tour
Mar 2020 • Couples
The tour itself was brilliant. We felt incredibly safe, everyone was so kind and we freely took photos. We learnt a lot about the sad history of the Commune and how things are slowly improving. Understanding the graffiti was brilliant, so many important messages. We met the tour guides grandmother who kindly offered some home-made lemonade whilst we learnt about her personal history.

The only part we weren’t keen on was the ending. We had taken the bus to the Commune with the guide (cost included in tour). Upon finishing in the Commune, we were told we had to make our own way back to the bus stop alone and pay for our own bus back. We couldn’t remember where we had got off the bus or where we needed to get off. It felt a little unorganised at the end. In future, the guide could at least walk the group back to the group back to the bus stop and show them the way.

Stairway to Heaven?
Feb 2020
On a walking tour with two guides (one Colombian and one Resident of the Communa) felt safe, well informed, inspired and welcome. Once the most dangerous communa in Medellin now a major tourist attraction. Stairs, cobblestone, Escalators and helpful people make this a must see destination inside this city.

Organised by Toucan tours. This was really interesting and a good introduction for using the Medellin metro system too.
we were taken all over commun 13 and were given lots of information and not rushed.
I highly recommend this Toucan tour.
