Depart your central Chengdu hotel by private vehicle, and make the roughly 30-minute journey to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
On route, hear about the base, one of the world’s most respected and best-known panda conservation centers. Covering 600 acres (240 hectares) of parkland, this non-profit facility provides giant and red pandas with the care and habitat needed to breed.
Get ample time to see the young and old giant pandas, together with the lesser-known red pandas, enjoying the antics of the youngest pandas especially. Plus, if you wish, visit the Panda Post Office to mail a panda-postmarked letter or postcard.
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, and back in Chengdu, stroll around Renmin Park where locals gather to sing, dance, and socialize. Take an optional pedal-boat ride (additional cost) here before continuing to the Wide and Narrow Alleys (Kuanzhai Xiangzi), a maze of 18th-century, Qing-dynasty alleys and courtyards that capture the essence of old Chengdu life.
See the teahouses, gardens, and houses, and perhaps catch a traditional puppet show. Then, finish by exploring Well Alley (Jing Xiangzi), a vibrant reconstructed quarter of cafes and bars before your tour ends with a hotel drop-off.
