Highlights
  • Hike the area’s most visited volcanoes: Izalco, Santa Ana, and Cerro Verde
  • Learn about Mayan culture at the Joya de Ceren and San Andres ruins
  • All transportation from San Salvador included
What to expect
  • Begin your tour with hotel pickup from San Salvador. Then, head to the first of three volcanoes: Cerro Izalco. Follow your guide on a 45-minute hike through the coffee plantations and cloud forest of Cerro Verde National Park en route to the crater, where a panoramic view of the surrounding volcanic line awaits. Continue to Santa Ana Volcano for a chance to see a dwarf-forest landscape distinct to Mesoamerica, followed by a trip to Coatepeque Lagoon at the summit of Cerro Verde. In the afternoon, visit the UNESCO-listed Joya de Ceren archaeological site to learn about daily life among the Mayan people who once lived there. Because the ruins were preserved by ash, they are sometimes called the “Pompeii of the Americas.” Your tour concludes with a visit to the San Andres ceremonial ruins and hotel drop-off.

Once again Mayra and Benji ensured that the trip was an incredible experience. Benji was on time and explained that Joya de Ceren was closed due to COVID-19 but that he would take me to another site close to Chalchuapa. He also asked me if I wanted to see the coast and make stops along the coast to see different food spots and bars.

Benji took me to eat pupusas at a local chain. Despite it being a chain it was very good. We made some stops to look at mountains and lakes. The views were amazing. He stopped anywhere I wanted to take a photo.

Once at Tuzmal, Benji handed me over to Gaby who went above and beyond. I enjoy history so speaking with her was a pleasure. She let me walk around and take tons of pictures. She never rushed me.

The way back was more of the same. Food, photos, and local dive bars. The ride back was amazing as the sun was getting ready to set.

Again, Benji is an amazing tour guide. I did this tour solo so that might influence my review. If you have the opportunity to do it solo do it.

Came to El Salvador Friday for a wedding on Saturday, had one day left and i wanted to see as much as possible, this tour did it. My Guide Antonio was very friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about history and culture. Took alot of pictures. Tour has a little bit of everything. Nature, museums and historic sites and a few spots for souvenirs. My Spanish is basic at best, so I was glad that Antonio was a fluent English speaker. He had no problem understanding my Caribbean accent. He was accommodating and would often ask about my well being. I have spent a few years in the tourism industry, this tour was great.

The Tour to the cerro verde was really impressive, directed by the excellent guide Mac Bernal, impressive history, beautiful places, a good view appreciating the volcanoes with the beautiful and shining sun and the glare of the sea. Mi next Tour will be amazing and i want to have the same guide Mac Bernal.

Great day trip. Our group was small (4) but it made for deeper connections with our guide. The tour was jam-packed with the socio-political history of the area, which made for a very educational afternoon. We stopped by a massive crater-lake for lunch and feasted on the local fish from it. Our guide made sure everyone was safe, learning, having fun, and laughing. He even gave us lots of great recommendations for food in our neighborhood before dropping us off!

While being a beach bum in El Tunco is always a great idea, you should go out and see what else ES has to offer. For that, do this tour.

Our guide was Marbel and he has a great knowledge and passion for his country. We visited two Mayan sites, and while not as extensive as Chichen Itza or Tikal, both are worth a visit. With ES having fewer tourists, you have more room to look around and explore. The volcano hike is also worth it. You'll be well over a mile high in a dense, beautiful forest.

The added bonus is the drive along the coast on the way back to El Tunco, which rivals the drive on PCH.

A day well spent.

I booked an airport shuttle pickup, group combo tour of volcanoes and Mayan ruins, and private trip to Montecristo National Park with pickup in San Salvador and drop off in Santa Ana. All pickups were prompt, all drivers were friendly and drove safely, and the guide on the volcanoes/mayan ruins tour did a good job. I would use Salvadorean Tours again. Solo traveler from the US.

We booked three different tours and this one by far was my favorite. While each tour offered its gems this one seemed to be a full day of gems for me and my family. I was traveling with my husband and three children. Our guide Benjamin did a great job of not only providing information that was interesting to the adults in the group but also little things that my kids loved. Joya de Ceren was closed but we visited Cero Verde which was my kids favorite stop. This Nature preserve is gorgeous. With the help of our guide we spotted all types of birds and other wildlife. My kids are still talking about having seen a deer and her baby as well as how they felt like Indiana Jones walking through the Jungle. Truth be told if you have young kids its a long day but if they are grade school age and enjoy exploring nature this tour will keep them interested and willing to walk the extra mile. Thanks for the amazing memories Salvadorean Tours.

The tour was very interesting, but did involve strenuous hiking on about 25% of the hike. Highly recommend appropriate footwear.

Unfortunately, the day we went was very foggy so we didn't see the views from the top.

Our guides were very knowledgeable.

Prior to arriving in El Salvador, I contacted Salvadorean Tours and I received prompt responses. We spent 3 nights in San Salvador so I booked 2 tours with them:

1) Combo Tour - Volcanoes, Lake and Mayan Sites including Joya de Ceren - $75 per person
2) San Salvador City Tour with El Boqueron and Santa Tecla - $65 per person

I made payment online with a credit card and everything was prepaid. The tour included entrance fees. The only thing we had to pay for was lunch and when we went to the Rosario Cathedral in San Salvador.

We had Eduardo for both days. We were staying at the Fairfield Hotel and pick up was very prompt. We were picked up at 8:30 am the first day for the City Tour and 8 am the Combo Tour.

We liked that Eduardo took us to really local places for lunch.

Neither one of these tours are very strenuous. The first day we got back at around 6 pm and around 5 pm for the Combo Tour. Traffic around San Salvador can be bad at times.

The car we used was a Hyundai sedan. It was relatively comfortable.

There were some sites we did not enjoy as much as others and you can see my separate review on each. The two sites were really enjoyed was Cerro Verde and El Boqueron.

This day long tour started with a pick-up at my hotel by the tour guide. I was surprised to find myself the only one signed up for this typically, small group tour. My guide for the day was Cesar Orantes, a most friendly and engaging story-teller. He was extremely professional and abundantly knowledgeable of not only the places we visited, but all aspects of Salvadoran culture and life. It was clear that he was eager to share his knowledge, and keen to keep me engaged throughout the day.

Officially, the tour takes you to the Cerro Verde National Park for a vista of the Izalco Volcano, the Santa Ana Volcano and Cerro Verde Volcano. Along the way, we passed by several vantage points of picturesque Lake Coatepeque (we lunched at a restaurant overlooking the lake). Our itinerary included World Heritage Site Joya de Ceren; unfortunately, during my visit, the site has just started preservation work, which will put it out of till next year. Instead, we toured the San Andres Archaeological Complex as an alternative. In addition, Cesar also drove me around San Salvador to see highlights including: the American Embassy, Monument to the Divine Savior of the World, the Cathedral of San Salvador, etc. Earlier in the day, we also took an unexpected but welcomed stop by Los Chorros, a local oasis fed by the water of the San Salvador Volcano.

The tour includes admission to all the sites.
