Incredible adventure with an amazing operator and guide
Jun 2019
Like I'm sure you are doing now, we read a lot of reviews before choosing Valencia Travel, and it was a top-notch experience from our first interaction until our amazing guide (Rene Suyo -- he was "boots on the ground" so most of the review is about him) dropped us off at our hotel. They were quick to respond to every inquiry and we flew to Cusco assured we were in good hands and beyond excited for the trip. I'm a little late with this review, but we went in mid-June.

The night before we set off, we went to Valencia's office (conveniently located in the center of Cusco) for orientation and to meet our guide. Rene recommended poles and mattress pads, both of which were clutch on the trail. The orientation also helped us pack more efficiently.

Bright and early the next morning, Rene and a driver arrived at our airbnb to pick us up and we set off to the trailhead. A couple of stops along the way and our van was full of porters who would carry supplies for us for the next four days .

I have done a fair amount of travel and the Inca Trail was among my favorite travel experiences. But I would not have finished the trail without Rene. His personality --soft-spoken but encouraging and personable -- was EXACTLY what you want beside you when you your legs are aching and you feel like there's nothing left in the tank but there's still two hours uphill to camp. He let us keep our own pace (he probably got us up earlier than he would have for a younger, fitter group, but I think that's a testament to his experience getting people of varying hiking experience through the trail) and even when the trail was really challenging helped make it an enjoyable experience. He helped with my bag over dead woman's pass and told us what to expect ahead (we asked him 30 times a day and were relieved when the answer was "easy peasy"). By day 2 we were joking that we didn't know how we could go back to our lives in Manhattan without Rene there 25/7 to be our life coach.

Another way Rene went above and beyond was photos... We got amazing group and individual shots at all the great vantage points (there are many)! We would only have a fraction of the memories if it weren't for his efforts there. He's good at getting good light and backgrounds. I was also impressed with how much he seemed to love what he does and love the trail. There was practically no trash along the trail -- but every now and then we would see Rene pick up a tiny scrap of paper or litter and carry it until the next checkpoint.

The food was also really good (Mario was our cook). We were woken up each morning with coca tea in our tent, which was very welcome way to ease into the morning before stretching our sore legs. The food was hearty, warm and surprisingly a lot of variety. Eggs, stews, really tasty peruvian potato dishes, trail mixes and fruit to bring on the trail... Definitely was not short on the carbs and protein you are definitely going to need. We were only 3 people in our group but there were always several options at each meal.

Rene was also a very knowledgeable tour guide, stopping at points of interest to tell us about the Trail, the incas, Machu Picchu and its construction and rediscovery. Several stops and history lessons every day helped build anticipation and help energize me for the eventual payoff! When we made it to Machu Picchu on the fourth day I didn't think I could walk another step but Rene's enthusiasm for the site--even after making the trek countless times--was infectious and I found the strength to thoroughly explore the site with Rene's guidance.

I had originally assumed that once the Machu Picchu tour was over Rene would head home to his family (well-deserved after working 24 hours a day for four days with us) and we would be on our own to make it back to our hotel in Cusco, but he was there to ferry us from the train to our hotel late on the evening of the 9th. He made sure we got our suitcases (which Valencia had stashed while we were on the trail).

If you decide to do the Inca Trail (and you should! An amazing albeit challenging experience) I would highly recommend Valencia and in particular Rene. I could not have imagined this amazing experience with anyone else.

Rene and his team are AMAZING
Jun 2019 • Friends
Let me start by saying that we were a group of 3 inexperienced hikers from New York City who decided it would be fun to attempt the 4-day Inca Trail. We splurged for the private tour (so happy we did).

In the months leading up to our trip, I emailed Valencia many, many times with countless questions, and they responded back very quickly to each one.

We met Rene at the Valencia offices the evening before our trek. He advised us to rent poles and mattress pads - this turned out to be a really good idea. From that point on, Rene was our guardian angel. He picked us up the next morning and didn't leave us until we were safely delivered to our hotel 4 days later. He told us not to worry about a thing, and that he would take care of every detail, and that is exactly what he did! We struggled through each day of the hike because of the altitude and our lack of hiking experience (this is a very challenging 4 days, so be prepared). Rene was a patient and encouraging guide, even when we were complaining or taking too many breaks.

Rene was our fearless leader, but he wasn't alone. We had an awesome chef named Mario (how did Mario cook so many delicious meals at a campsite?), and 7 porters who carried all of the equipment each day. These men were the hardest workers I had ever met - I still don't understand how they climb the mountain so quickly with 50 lbs on their backs. The porters also carried some of our personal belongings, which was crucial. At first we were embarrassed to have 7 porters for just the three of us, but it turned out to be the best decision we ever made. They greeted us every morning with hot tea in our tent, and hot water several times per day. I ate better at camp than I usually do in New York with breakfast, snacks, lunch, tea time, dinner, and dessert each day. They even put up our own private toilet tent each night so that we didn't have to use the smelly squat toilets at camp.

Also, Rene told us that this company treats its employees much better than some of the other Inca Trail companies, which we were really happy to hear. This may be a little more expensive than some of the other groups, but you truly get what you pay for. I would highly recommend this company, and especially Rene and his team! Thank you Rene, we miss you!

7 Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu + Sacred Valley + Cusco City!
What an amazing trip!! My friend and I couldn't be happier with Valencia Travel! We booked a 7 day Peru/Machu Picchu trip with day trips in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Diana with Valencia Travel kept in touch before our trip and answered all our questions timely. Thanks Diana! The moment we landed in Cusco; Andre from Valencia was waiting for us in the airport-- took us to our beautiful hotel (4 star by my account),  welcomed us, answered all our questions, and walked us through the itinerary. Thanks Andre! Spent two days in Cusco before hitting the Inca Trail taking day tours. Guides picked us up in clean, comfortable, professional vans. Guides spoke English fluently. Highly recommend the half day Cusco tour and full day Sacred Valley tour!!

Our Inca Trail guides met the whole group in our hotel lobby the night before and answered all our questions. Interestingly enough Peruvians were going to go on strike the day we planned to start hiking so in order to keep schedule we got started on our trip that night instead of the next morning. Valencia Travel and the guides took this in stride and we got an extra night under the stars at km 82 of the Inca Trail. We were bused to km 82 in style! A beautiful,  spacious, comfortable bus. Everyone felt comfortable and slept like babies!

Started our Inca Trail to Machu Picchu glamping trip comfortable and full of awesome food! Awesome FOOD is something we ate the entire trip! Our guides Javier and David were awesome! They catered to our every need, kept us updated on our progress, and truly cared about our wellbeing.  The support staff (porters/Chef ect.) were nothing short of spectacular!!

I can't say enough about Valencia Travel,  the Machu Picchu via Inca Trail adventure, and the people of Peru!!

When you go to Peru I recommend Valencia Travel every day of the week. 5 Stars hands down the best.

I'm thinking about visiting Peru again for the many other adventures and I'm taking Valencia Travel with me!! :- )

Incredible Journey to Machu Picchu!
Mar 2019 • Friends
Valencia Travel Cusco went above and beyond to help make my experience on the Inca Trail an unforgettable one. Things that made the trip a great success:

- Nicanor (Nico) has been one of the best guides I’ve ever had in my experiences traveling. Nico is quite passionate about sharing his knowledge and stories about Andean culture. In addition to learning about the landmarks and ruins, we learned about the local plants and animals as we encountered them along the way. On a particularly clear night, he also explained about the stars in the Southern sky.

- I was struggling with the pace later on in the trail, and Nico made sure that I made it down to camp safely each day, physically helping me step by step and getting help from porters. Given my challenges, Nico patiently modified my itinerary slightly so I would have more time to hike, gave me tips to get through tough sections, and checked in on me despite being far behind others in my group. Throughout this he kept a positive attitude on the situation, and kept my spirits up. I needed every bit of help to complete the trek, and Nico made sure I had what I needed!

- The porters worked extremely hard to ensure that our camps were set up properly. They were quite friendly on the trail, never failing to say hi and give words of encouragement as they passed by us. They were also on hand to provide light and additional support on sections that we hiked after dark. I appreciated the introductory meeting on the first night, in which we learned all their names and a little about their families.

- The meals, prepared by our chef Wilfredo and the team were delicious and exactly what we needed after hours of hiking. They prepared a variety of traditional Peruvian dishes using local ingredients and carefully planned the menu to take into the account the altitude. Some of these included quinoa soup, trout, chaufa, and pizza. Last but not least, they made us a cake on the last day of the trail to celebrate and even told us how they were able to make it at camp! In case that isn’t enough, snacks such as corn, banana chips, and chicha morada candy were also provided.

- For the booking process, Vanessa replied to my many questions promptly and clearly, often within one business day. She presented various options / add-ons about the hike in great detail and accommodated individual preferences in my group. She provided helpful information about the logistics of the hike so that we were adequately prepared.

- I rented walking sticks and a sleeping bag from Valencia, and both were quite new and good quality. The tents were quite sturdy and had more than enough room for 2 people and their personal belongings.

- Valencia Travel provided the porters with appropriate clothing and hiking boots. They also explained to us the measures they take to ensure proper working conditions, and asked us to give feedback about this at the end of the tour so that they can continue to improve on this in the future.

The best Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu!
Mar 2019 • Friends
If you are going to hike the Inca Trail, choose Valencia Travel Cusco! My 5 friends and I did a 4-day private hike and had an incredible experience from start to finish. The hike was life changing and I am confident it is because of all the care and attention of Valencia and their team that I had such a wonderful time.

To start, booking over email was easy and Vanessa always promptly answered any questions we had about add-ons, emergency measures, pricing, etc. Valencia was also very accommodating of changes to our participant list (you can read about their refund policy on their website!). To give an example of their attention to detail, when we added an extra hiker, the company made sure to adjust the per person tour price in order to account for a discount given to larger groups.

The night before we departed for our hike, our guide, Nico, came by our hotel in Cusco to give an orientation. This was super helpful to go over logistics and answer any last minute questions. This was also when we got duffel bags to fill with our things for personal porters to carry, and when we got to choose if we wanted to rent walking sticks (I highly recommend for the steep climbs), air mattresses (I also recommend) and sleeping bags (very warm and convenient if you don’t want to bring your own!).

The next morning we were picked up at 5:30am, with literally no idea how much we would see, do, and experience in 4 short days. To give a couple more reasons why our trip was amazing:
- Nico is the best. If he is your guide, you are in amazing hands and will learn so much about the sights and history of the Inca Trail and Andean culture. He knows the trail so well and is an expert at guiding people through it - he will give you tips for how to get through the tricky parts, he will equip you with the smarts to stay safe, and he will keep you laughing throughout the trail. I’m especially appreciative of how he helped a friend who was going at a more modest pace. For example, as it started to get dark one evening, he reassured me that he would stay with me and the friend, even calling for two porters to join us as backup to help us in the dark.
- The porter team and the cook are incredible. I loved being introduced to the team hiking with us, and only wish I spoke Spanish so that I could have had a chance to better express my gratitude. They are extremely kind, patient, quick, and always there to help. I thought the meals and snacks were delicious. So much care went into meals: from cute garnishes to napkins folded like animals.
- The camp setups exceeded expectations. Everything is setup for you by the time you are done hiking for the day. We shared tents intended for 3 people between 2 people, so there was a good amount of space for our stuff. At camp, the team sets up a portable toilet in a little tent. The food tent is very home-y feeling! They used a cute llama tablecloth for us.
- Logistics are well organized by Valencia, making the trip easy for us. This includes: transport to the start of the trail, tickets for Machu Picchu, tickets to Wayna Picchu (an add-on hike that I loved), bus tickets to Aguas Calientes, train+bus tickets back to Cusco (including a beautiful ride on the PeruRail), and then van transport back to our hotel in Cusco.
- And of course: the trail and Machu Picchu are sublime. Photos and words can’t capture how beautiful the mountains are, how special the trail is, how incredible the ancient city is. The trail is very hard (!) but I can’t imagine another hike more magical than the Inca Trail. You’ll see many ruins along the way, and hikers get to walk into Machu Picchu by foot, while other visitors are getting off busses to wait in an entrance line!

A couple of tips and other things I wanted to mention:
- Remember to follow the packing list that’s on Valencia’s website!
- If you’re going around rainy season (like we did), make sure you have a poncho and a raincoat. It works better than a backpack cover + raincoat combo. Personally, I didn't wear rain pants and didn't feel like I needed them.
- Be prepared. Bring meds (pepto, loperamide, Advil etc), start taking altitude medication 24 hours before you get to Cusco, bring a headlamp (very helpful!), know that this hike is hard.
- Be respectful of your hiking family, and do your best to be timely. Waking up on time and getting ready quickly (in the morning and after lunch) means that the chef and porters will have enough time to pack after you and move to the next campsite.
- Bring 400 soles per person, including some coins for the 1 sol bathrooms along the trail. You’ll spend soles on small purchases from stands on days 1 & 2, tip, and lunch at the end of the hike.
- Valencia provides guidelines for how much to tip your porters, chef and guide. However, consider giving a higher amount because of things like rainy season, extra work they do for your trip, and exceptional service (which I think Valencia does provide!).
- I noticed that some porters on the trail from other companies didn’t seem to have footwear/uniform appropriate for their hard work - Valencia provides this for their porters and I valued that!
- Pay attention to the porters’ experiences: where they sleep, what they eat, their workload. There will be a survey that asks about this at the end, and is something worth reflecting on.
- You can read more about Valencia's commitment and contributions to local Peruvian communities on their website.

I will look back at this experience as one of the most memorable in my life, and I am so thankful for the team at Valencia that made it happen. Future hikers: you don’t need to consider any other companies, choose this one!!! Thank you again Valencia!

Best Vacation of My Life
Dec 2018 • Couples
The experience on the Inca trail was breathtaking and unforgettable. The guides were very helpful and courteous, and the cook provided world class Peruvian dishes during the trek. Valencia created a comfortable and memorable experience and ensured that everything went smoothly with their expertice.

I will certainly use Valencia travel next time I am in Peru!

To potential travelers: I would reccomend thouroughly reading through Valencia's recomendations and following them as close as possible. If you live in a low altitude climate, I would reccomend spending several days in Cusco and possibly taking Diamox or some other medication to prevent high altitude sickness.

You'll Never Regret It!
Oct 2018 • Couples
My husband and I found Valencia Travel Cusco through The Clymb and signed up right away after looking at the amazing reviews! We were not sure what to expect on this trek but it was one of the best experiences we've ever had! Our guide, Jose, was very informative throughout the hike and at Machu Picchu. The cook, Gregorio, made some of the best food we had in Peru. It was incredible! Props to his assistant, Mario, and waiter Claudio. Our porters were Santos, Sebastian, and Bernadino and they, along with the others, were such SUPERSTARS in carrying the tent, food, and other supplies in huge packs throughout the entire trek. They were friendly and were always willing to help out with getting us fresh water and making sure we were comfortable. This beautiful and challenging hike, with the spectacular archaeological sites along the way and Machu Picchu at the end, is a trip not soon to be forgotten. Thank you to each and every one of you who helped make this trip possible!! <3

John was a wonderful guide, so knowledgeable and took the time to explain the history and answer any of our questions. The porters were amazing and treated very well. We really enjoyed the private tour, allowing us to go our speed to take all the pictures we wanted and escape the crowds. Cannot forget the amazing 4 course delicious meals in the middle of the mountains!

From watching other companies and on the trail with us I will say that Valencia takes great care in it's staff and porters and guides. These Men and Women keep you safe and guide you through the trail and sites that the public doesnt get to see as they are only found on the teail itself. The food was excellent! Staff provided boiled water and a sit down toilet on the trail head!

I want to say thank you to our guides Aldo and Roland! Thank you Valencia !
