Floating docks on choppy waters. Fun for kids, challenging for seniors
This was our fourth Thai speed boat tour - and not the best. Negatives: I agree with the previous reviews voicing concerns about the very low-quality snorkeling, the herd-like tone, and the painful boat rides. In addition, nowhere in the literature or from staff at our hotel, is there any specific warning provided about the true level of physical readiness you have to have to enjoy this particular excursion. If you have joint replacements, arthritis, sprains, or children that need to be in backpacks know that each (of the three) docks you land at requires you to walk on slippery, plastic, RAILINGLESS, floating docks that wave with waves, small and tall. Slipping and or falling is the risk you take especially if the waves are choppy as they were on our trip. I am an active senior but I do have 3 knee replacements so each step from the boat to the shore required careful maneuvering. I chose to swim from the boat to the shore because the risk of falling was just too great. It stunned me just how careless, shortsighted, and parasitic, the PR for this tour was by not considering the full range of risks involved with their tours and the full range of potential customers they attract - besides pregnant women and those with spinal issues. Secondly, life preservers were ready for our use on the way to our first island stop. Mysteriously, they disappeared by the time we took our hour-long, extremely choppy, risky fast boat ride home. Hmmm.... Positives: The boat crew was great: informative, positive, flexible, and skilled. Would not replace them in any way.

        Great experience with delicious food
I gave my mother this experience as a present for our holiday and we absolutely loved it. The food was delicious, easy to follow along and the staff were the sweetest. The atmosphere is very cozy and you feel welcome from the second you get picked up. The recipe book you revive afterwards is also easy to follow and the ingredients are listed precisely. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has some spare time in Ao Nang.

Efficient and cost friendly way to travel
Very convenient and efficient way to travel. Would definitely do it again. Boat was at maximum capacity, so felt a bit squashed. We had arranged for hotel pick up and drop off. Driver was on time for pick up, however taxi service for hotel drop off was very confusing. No one knew where to go and drivers were not working off a list. We were waiting for our suitcases and were almost left behind

Average, at best, for a lower cost ferry.
The Princess Ferry - Koh Phi Phi Don to Ao Nang: Not all of the information I would usually consider was offered in the description of this trip when I booked it. The ticket is only good for entry into the main and below deck passenger areas. You can smoke by the restrooms on the back of the main deck but all outdoor walkways and open air spaces above the entry deck are off limits with the ticket purchased through TripAdvisor/Viator. If you want access to any outside areas above the entry deck you must pay an additional 200 baht in cash directly to the boat operators for “VIP Access”. I would have preferred to know about this restriction of outdoor areas before I chose this carrier. I don’t smoke but always choose to be outside where possible (and weather permitting) when I’m on a ferry transport so this was a bit of a let-down for me.

A very nice day with professional staff
Wow Andaman was managing the whole package extremely well. Mr. Chang was our guide and I want to send my warmest thanks to him. Similan is unbelievably beautiful and we even saw a sea turtle while snorkeling. Food offering was good and for sure enough (2 lunch boxes per person, breakfast and even a dinner). Highly recommended.

Great way to spend an evening!
Wonderful rustic, rural location. Great hostesses. Delicious food, with several options. We were fortunate to be part of a small class of 4, so we got a lot of attention, although at times it felt like we were being rushed through (as others have commented). Useful to have the pamphlet with recipes so that I can try recreating some of the dishes at home. We took our leftovers as a takeaway, and decided to donate them to a beggar we passed on the way back to our hotel. He seemed genuinely delighted.

        Worth the time
The view is definitely worth the effort. You can find less expensive trips than on trip advisor. A difference of more than $20.00 per person. Plenty of boats. No need to worry. They try to pack too much in. No need for the snorkeling. Hardly saw any fish.

        A day to remember
A fully packed day visiting different islands in the marine park , each with its own characteristics. The snorkelling was fun as the water was clear and there were plenty of fish. My favourite was the blue crater lagoon. The staff were very helpful in taking photos for us and ensuring our safety and comfort.

Good trip but a long way
We’ve been on many snorkelling trips and this one is in the best for seeing many different types of fish, there are 3 snorkelling stops, but they are very busy as there are 4/5 boats stopped at each place at the same time, so you did have to very careful not to bump into people, the sea was also choppy and tidel in parts so the boats put a rope out to keep you within the safe area. Lunch was disappointing, a bit like a sloppy canteen affair, with fruit afterwards and you had to put your dirty plates and leftovers into a really not very pleasant slops bin 😬 however the beach area was very nice and pleasant to swim in for an hour. Be aware that it is a 2 hour speed boat ride each way to the surin islands from Khao Lak, the boat travels quickly and anyone with back problems may have issues, and the sea is choppy, sea sickness bags are handed out at the beginning but fortunately we did not need them.

        Best cooking class!!
We had the best time cooking with Ying. There were about 15 people in total and we were then devided into two groups of 7/8. We got to make 3 different dishes!! For each of them, we had multiple options to choose from. We made Tom Yum soup, green, red or Panang curry and then a stirfry or pad thai. In the end we got a little booklet with all the recipes. As all of us are vegetarian, we told them beforehand and it wasn’t a problem at all!! Even vegan isn’t a problem I think, there are alternatives for all animal products. Definitely go do this course, it was so much fun and we learned a lot! :)

Full day in and on the water
Great day, excellent value including food and water tea/coffee First stop was a little lack lustre and we would have preferred to have gone straight to the island as by the time we arrived there it was getting busy and by the time we left it was chokka block full. The guide was great super friendly and we felt safe Saw three sea turtles which was a highlight Be aware that the price you pay does not include fins, if you want to snorkel with fins it’s extra and you pay when you’re checking in. Regardless if this we enjoyed our day and thought it was good value

        Memorable experience
Highly recommend this experience for those who enjoy scenic beauty and adventure. The guide was efficient and each activity was enjoyable. The food at the jungle retreat was delicious. Accommodation at the floating bungalows is very basic and the washroom situation could be improved. A little minor discomfort was worth it however, as the scenery is truly spectacular.

We booked many daytrips for our 2 weeks honeymoon in Thailand. All trips had something special about them, but this one was the star, the special one.
After the transfer to the pier we started the journey with a boat. We'd been a group of 30 pax add or take a couple and we had started the tour with a vegetarian lunch (recommended considering the canoeing). After the lunch and an hour of cruising we have arrived to the first cave. We had been all allocated a personal guide who was paddling our canoe and showing us through the caves. Our guide was Cham and he was simply amazing. He always found a way to show us something unusual or to get the best position with the canoe for a great shot.
We were lucky enough to see monkeys in one of the lagoons and one actually jumped on our canoe and travelled a while with us.
We returned to the boat and had some fruits and banana muffins. After this we had some more canoeing and visited lagoons. For supper we had amazing thai food, which was delicious. The staff was attentive and they always had vegetarian and vegan food cooked.
With our guide we decorated the already prepared katong. After the sunset we entered the last cave and lighted the katong. When the candles burned out the cave turned dark. When moving the water with the paddle or your hand little lights/sparkles appeared, but it is not possible to catch it on camera.
We have then returned to the boat. From the roof of the boat, laying on our back we were able to enjoy the sky full of stars. We arrived back to the pier around 10pm.
Thank you for the amazing experience!

After reading other reviews we decided to book this trip and it didn’t disappoint. We went as a family of four (2 adults and 2 children aged 13 and 7).

      The whole day was incredible.

We were picked up from our hotel and took to the pier where you can very cheaply buy drinks, clothes, waterproof covers etc before boarding the boat.

We visited a number of different caves and lagoons during the day and for each had the same guides (typically 2-3 people per guide) who knew so much about the animals living there, the history and so on.

We had lunch on the boat which was so good as well as unlimited bottled water.

As the sun sets we made floral style offerings and floated them within one of the caves.

The whole experience was magical, the kids loved it and the day seemed to fly by.

We would definitely do this trip again if we come back to Phuket.

Absolutely amazing day, if you get the chance - do it! They picked us up from our hotel and then we ended up leaving on the boat at around noon. There were 40 people, and the tour ended up taking 2 boats out.
Lunch and dinner was provided and delicious, with plenty of options for vegetarians and anyone who doesn't like fish.
The islands were stunning. They employ local fisherman to "captain" your kayak, so you're not actually paddling yourself. We had a great gentleman named Baw, who spoke really good English and kept up an informative and funny narration the entire trip.
We had a free hour to kayak ourselves around the islands or swim in the ocean.
Bioluminescent plankton were such a treat!

      Thanks for an amazing day.

The pickup from hotel was quick and easy.
The whole trip was overall okay.

Then we had to sign our names and hotel name.
Then we were guided to the shop where we had to sit for a while. This was pretty boring and unneeded in my opinion.

After that we were seated in the transfer cars to ride for about 15 secods to the ship.

The whole process leading to this moment could have been more simple.

When the luch started I was pleasantly surprised. Food tasted amazing. Crew was also being super polite and helpful.

We were informed that we can leave life jackets in the ship if we are comfortable without them. This was very important for me as I feel uncomfortable having one on me.

After that we blindly picked our tour guide. I believe it was fair, but i pity other people who got guides that were not as comfortable and welcoming as ours. His name was Moosa or Mussa and he was the person who had made this trip best thing that happened to me in Thailand.

He was great at telling stories and answering questions, showed more things than others got to see and basically everytime we were near other people he was making their experience better too, by saying things their guide did not know or did not say.

We were canoeing 3 times in total. 2 islands and evening ceremony.

Also whats worth mentioning is the dinner.
It was two times as good as lunch, food was so tasty as it rarely happens to me in different countries.

All in all it was worth the money all the way. Would definitely repeat the same thing.

      Awesome!
Great sights to see and a very well run tour. The Bay, caves and lagoons are a must see, and the sea canoes and guides navigate excellently. At first we wanted to kayak on our own, but it becomes obvious why guides are needed. Our guide, Mousa, was the best, he was fun, informative, and provided a personal touch. John Gray pays more attention to details than most, everything happens quickly and efficient.
What could be complicated logistics happens flawlessly. These tours can be very crowded and the Bay congested, this Starlight cruise is afternoon and evening and misses much of the crowds.
The lunch and dinner they provide was excellent! We had low expectations but ended thinking it was better than most meals we’ve had in Thailand.
Very glad we chose John Gray and very glad we chose the Starlight trip to Phang Nga Bay.

This tour is expensive but it is offset by the quality and being taken to places that tourists don't frequent. The day starts at 1000 and you get back to your hotel at around 2200. It is a huge day. This is the second time we have done this trip as we were very impressed 2 years ago with this tour.
Light lunch was lovely, fresh and not that light at all-spring rolls, soup, curry, afternoon tea with cakes, fruit platters, drinking water. BYO drinks also allowed as you cannot purchase anything on board.
Our guide was very informative and understood the cultural and spaces we travelled in. There was an hour free time to swim, kayak or just hang about. We were shown krill at night saw an amazing sunset and a new moon. The caves were amazing.
Crew were very friendly and polite. They had a great sense of humour also. Safety was addressed and so were dietary requirements.
This tour caters for all diets-I was impressed at the quality and quantity of food provided.
We have recommended this tour to many friends and everyone has had a most enjoyable time. I could not complain about anything.

This trip is 100% recommended. The staff were amazing and the whole day ran smoothly. The canoeing was great fun and the sights were breathtaking. The added element of making a traditional Thai flower to float into the water tipped the whole day off. The food was plentiful and tasty and free soft drinks were available all day. It was the best boat trip We have ever been on and would recommend it to anyone!

We have visited Thailand many times, and we really try and stay away from the typical tourist spots, but I'd looked at this trip many times and decided to give it a go based on the reviews and what I had read about John Grey previously. It is only one of w few tours that you can see the plankton at night, so we finally went for it, and I am so glad we did. On turning up at the pier I was still slightly dubious, there were a lot of people, but we were split into 3 groups, each going on 3 different boats. From that point on, I never felt like we were squashed in, or there wasn't enough space or we were waiting for other guests etc. its organised very well. So the trip itself is really wonderful - highlights were definitely the bioluminescent plankton, and making the krathong and lighting them at night in the cave. The crew are really fantastic, our guides went out of their way to show us animals and caught jelly fish and crabs for the boys to hold and look at. Please do not hesitate to book this tour, its a fantastic day, away from the usual tourist spots and although expensive, you definitely get your monies worth. But for us, we were even luckier than most - as we stepped onboard the boat we saw John Grey and he was actually coming out on our boat for the day!! He says he still goes out every day if he can as he loves it that much. We talked to him for most of the day about his travels and the things he has accomplished and we felt very special to be listening to the guy who created this tour and first found these caves all those years ago.

My fiancee and I did this tour shortly after we got engaged and it was absolutely magical. The minute I booked my flight and hotel to Phuket, I also booked this. I had done sea kayaking when I was 16 with my family and loved it so much that I wanted my fiancee to experience it as well. This excursion was absolutely fantastic. No, the reviews are not lying to you.
We went through so many caves and lagoons, had some great food, had a good amount of free time, got to build Krathongs (traditional thai floating lanterns), floated those Krathongs in a bat cave, and then got to see bioluminescent algae.
Our main tour guide was great, and very informative. Our personal paddler was also wonderful, despite not being able to speak english, we could still tell that he was trying his very best. He was a fantastic photographer and took one of our favourite photos to date. The main tour guide also made sure to stick close by to us as we were paddled through the caves and lagoons so that we could still get information and fun facts. They were both wonderful and so pleasant to talk to, joke with and just be around.
I would say a word of caution if you are claustrophobic in any way as the extremely tight entrances to the cave spooked me quite a bit despite me not being scared of that kind of stuff. I would also warn people who think it would be a good idea to bring small children to this, as i witnessed 2 different families with young children struggle to keep their kids still on the kayaks. To be honest I felt bad for the families because they were so busy trying to keep their children still and well behaved, that they couldn't enjoy one of the most beautiful places on earth.
All in all, this was such a fantastic experience, from the jaw dropping scenery, good food, fun crafts and great conversations shared with the guys and other guests. I would recommend this to teenagers and adults so that they can fully appreciate this fantastic experience.
I've done this excursion twice now, and I will undoubtedly be booking again when I return to phuket, I just can't get enough!

This trip was over an above anything I was expecting.
While the start location was not as expected, once we got on the boat and started on our voyage towards the Hongs everything came alive.
We were all assigned our own personal rower for the duration of the trip, and they are all so friendly and welcoming. It was great to get to know the staff on a personal level, their stories of how Covid has affected their livelihood in particular.
The journey to the first canoe spot took around 50 minutes, during which we were served snacks, water and ice tea or coffee.
As the tide changes daily to different timings the first couple of canoe spots weren’t as interesting as the tide was low so you couldn’t see much, though our rower offered up many interesting facts about the geology of the region.
Onto the next location we had more snacks and drinks, the caves in this location were much more interesting, with an amazing lagoon surrounded by exotic bird song and monkeys, it was like something out of Avatar.
Dinner was provided, a mixture of local curries and rice, I can’t eat spicy food an there were options I could eat too.
The absolute highlight of the trip was making the Loy Kraton and floating them in the cave after sunset.
We made the kraton with the help of our rower who told us about this history of the festival and the meaning of the kraton.
This was such a beautiful experience and one of our highlights of our trip to Thailand.
I would absolutely recommend this trip, I didn’t find any other company offering this same experience, and while we were there we only saw one other boat the whole time. A must do experience while in Phuket
