What to expect
Your Kona surf lesson begins near Kahalu’u Bay, where you’ll meet your expert, local instructor at a surf shop across the street. Here you’ll begin by selecting a board and getting fitted for booties and a rash guard, which help protect your feet from the rocks and your skin from the tropical sun. Once you’re set up with all your gear, head towards the waters of Kahalu’u Bay where you’ll learn some techniques on the sand, which include paddling, positioning, safety, etiquette and ways to select the best waves. You’ll even learn the proper way of what to do if you fall. Next, strap on your leash and grab your board for the water part of your adventure, where you’ll slowly paddle out towards the waves with your instructor right by your side. Because this surf lesson is for small groups of only two or three people, you’re ensured the instruction is highly personalized and you’ll maximize your time in the water. If you’ve surfed before, but still need some additional instruction on riding the face of the wave, the instructor can tailor the lesson around your specific set of skills. Beginners will stick with the smaller waves on the inside section of reef, whereas experienced surfers might venture farther out to the larger, more powerful waves.  Either way, whatever your skill set or experience with surfing, this 2-hour Kona surfing lesson is one of the best activities on the Big Island, where the sun, salt and splash of the waves combine to create an outdoor adventure that travelers of all ages can enjoy.

Amazing Day Learning to Surf!
My 15 year old son and I thoroughly enjoyed our surfing experience. Corey and Mike were incredible teachers. They were patient, encouraging, and shared their love and passion for surfing with us. If you want to learn to surf, this is the place to go on the Big Island.

Amazing surf lesson!!!
Nov 2020
We had a group of 6 friends with three surf instructors for our small group lessons and it was one of the highlights of our trip! The instructors were all amazing, attentive, made everyone feel so comfortable. Every single one of us ended up being able to stand up by the end! We also had two friends drop their surf lesson the day of and it wasn't a problem, Ben refunded us immediately. I highly highly recommend this surf lesson for everyone!!!

First Surf-> Caught the Waves!
Mar 2020
I was a bit skeptical of the shop when my lessons were cancelled due to waves, and we were spoken to pretty rudely on the phone and at check-in. It was my 28th birthday trip, and we considered cancelling... but decided to give Surf & Sea a chance anyway. However: our surf instructor, Corey, more than made up for this inconvenience! Corey was amazing at instruction, guidance, and helping us catch waves. Also appreciated the photo service offered by the photographer at Isurfkona.com --> Check it out! We both got awesome prints, standing up for the first time in the surf. I'm impressed that we caught so many waves, and at the kindness of our instructor. May all beings be stoked! -Ashley & Jake

Young and old

Did the lesson with my 11 year old son; it was a great intro into for anyone wanting to try surfing. The staff were both professional and very laid-back friendly, exactly the way you would imagine seasoned surfers to be. They showed us the basics and then got us out on the water. Low and behold, my son was the first to stand up on his board! But after that, everyone was surfing, and more importantly, having fun trying.

Strongly recommend this company for at least one of your many adventures while in Hawaii.

Such a wonderful day!
Dec 2019
On our first trip to the Big Island, our kids (ages 19-22) wanted to take surfing lessons. At $99 a lesson, I was skeptical because I thought they would spend most of their time falling into the ocean - which they could do for free! I was so wrong. This was by far the best money I spent in Hawaii. The entire team at Surf and Sea are so amazing. They are encouraging, laid back, fun and this could not have been a better experience. We had 7 people altogether and every one of them surfed multiple waves within the first 45 minutes. They all left with big smiles on their faces and memories that will last a lifetime.

Aloha Amber, thank you for choosing our company to get you and your family out on the water. The waves could not have been better on the day of your surf lesson. We were stoked that you all did so well and caught a TON of waves! We are happy to hear that surf lessons with us was the best thing you spent money one while in Hawaii. That means so much to us! Old Man vs Young Man
Dec 2019
We spent two hours surfing with Chris. I'm 50 and my son is 18. We both had a great time with Chris who was patient and gave us both the personal training we need. We spent most of the time in the water and very little on land. Chris was helpful, engaging, and knowledgeable. The check-in process was quick and easy. The company also had snacks for us. It was a fun and exhausting two hours.

It was our first time surfing, so the lessons were worth it. We both stood up by our 3rd attempt. Surfing is a Zen sport, meaning there is a lot of watching and waiting. But unless you are an in-shape surfer you will enjoy the lulls. If you are over 40, take some Tylenol BEFORE you go out. Your neck and shoulders will appreciate it, and you will have a better time. It helped me a lot.

Aloha Glen, big Mahalos for the awesome review! Love the title by the way😅. We are stoked to hear you and your younger more agile son had so much fun learning to surf with your instructor Chris. He is such a great guy to spend a couple hours on the water with. Hope your neck and shoulders are feeling better! Mele kalikimaka, Ben and all the crew at Kahaluu Bay Surf and Sea 🤙🏼🌊😎

Thank-you crew for a great day. In search of a last minute surf experience we called several places. We picked Kahalu'u since they had openings but Ben told us it would be better to wait until the next day due to afternoon surf conditions. So we booked for 8:30 the next day. Everyone in our group got up right away and had the time of their lives. The crew worked so hard - brought all the boards to the beach, pushed the surfers into each wave, coached in-between waves, and progressed the students to trying to catch their own wave in just 90 minutes. Climbing in and out of the ocean was the hardest part. Be careful on the rocks my son cut has ankle on the way out. For the paparazzi, there is a great spot to take pictures behind the church.
