Overview

Take a walk through history on this 2-hour food tour of DC’s U Street, formerly known as Black Broadway. Avoid the hassle of navigating on your own and instead follow a guide through historic neighborhoods once frequented by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Going with a guide ensures you visit hard-to-spot landmarks and murals, as well as cafes and restaurants loved by locals.

What to Expect

Meet the guide at 11:30am at Ben’s Next Door in the heart of historic U Street. After greetings and introductions, whet your appetite with a tasting of Ben’s famous chili.

Continue on a walking tour of U Street and Shaw, two historic neighborhoods that were once the heart of black culture in America. Pass by famous landmarks and murals, many of which are unmarked or hard to find without the knowledge of a guide.

As you learn about the impact of U Street’s music, art, and architecture, stop at a variety of establishments loved by locals for a tasting menu that includes chili dogs, Ethiopian entrees, and Jamaican tea.

After two leisurely hours, the tour ends in Shaw, home of the famous Howard Theatre. Leave with the knowledge that a portion of your ticket price goes to the area's residents in need.

Discriminating against single travellers

I would really have liked to go on this food tour, but in trying to sign up I got an error message that said attendees had to number from 2 to 15. So no one travelling alone can take this tour. That really sucks. I...More

Hi TamMpls~ I'm so sorry that you had this experience. We do welcome single travelers but for logistical purposes, our system only allowed people to book a single ticket once we already had two others signed up. Please understand that it simply did not make...More

We love to do food/walking tours in every city we visit, and this was among the best. Our guide, Tiffany, was extremely knowledgeable and did an excellent job. When visiting DC we often get inundated with our national history, which is fine, but often we...More

A great tour, well worth it

We had a great afternoon on the walking tour and tried some great food and learnt lots. We had never had Ethiopian quisine before and it was amazing. Tiffany was an excellent guide and it felt we were on an extended lunch with friends.

We all know bits of the Nation's history, but D.C.'s local history is awesome!

Absolutely a MUST if you're a foodie and want to experience local history through delicious morsels and a fantastic guide. Part art tour (amazing murals), part architecture, part food, we all walked away with some great photos and full bellies. I'd never had Ethiopian food,...More
