Overview
Take a walk through history on this food tour of DC’s U Street, formerly known as Black Broadway. Avoid the hassle of navigating on your own and instead follow a guide through historic neighborhoods once frequented by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Going with a guide ensures you visit hard-to-spot landmarks and murals, as well as cafes and restaurants loved by locals.
Itinerary
  • You'll start at
    1213 U St NW
1213 U St NW, Washington, DC 20009, USA
Please arrive 5 minutes prior to tour time and meet your guide outside of the restaurant. If you do not see your guide, please head inside and find your group.

Highlights
  • Learn about the history and impact of U Street, a former hub of black culture
  • Sample a variety of dishes from establishments loved by locals
  • Local guide points out landmarks and murals you may not spot on your own
  • Portion of the ticket price goes to residents in need
What to Expect
Meet your guide in the heart of historic U Street. After greetings and introductions, whet your appetite with a chili tasting at Ben's Next Door, directly across from the U Street Metro. Continue on a walking tour of U Street and Shaw, two historic neighborhoods that were once the heart of black culture in America. Pass by famous landmarks and murals, many of which are unmarked or hard to find without the knowledge of a guide. As you learn about the impact of U Street’s music, art, and architecture, stop at a variety of local-approved eateries to taste chili dogs, Ethiopian entrees, Jamaican tea, and more. Your tour ends in Shaw, home of the famous Howard Theater. Leave with the knowledge that a portion of your ticket price goes to help the area's residents in need.

Dear Rose, your review made me choke up a little...I so appreciate that you enjoyed our tour. Your experience is exactly what we are aiming to deliver. That said, I apologize for the delay in my response! Stefan and I have been so focused of adapting and operating safely that I failed to notice your review. Megan! I'm so sorry for the delay in response here! Obviously, this has been a strange year and despite ceasing our tours for several months just after you joined, we've had a lot going on. Carpe DC is now Blue Fern Travel - offering Fork Tours and Fizz Tours. We've bee pretty busy and I somehow missed your review. Thank you for going us - we LOVE Pack Up & Go. Good for you for taking the plunge and going on a surprise trip. We're glad we were a part of it. I hope you'll travel back to DC and take another tour with us at some point. :)
