About
A private, personalised, walking tour with the minimal use of public transportation showing you the Budapest highlights through the eyes of an insider with interesting, up-to-date and funny stories. Less is more: the tour may not cover everything in a half day- it's impossible anyway- but you are going to have a unique overview about the city: the taste of it, even if you spend a day in town only. It might also make you feel confident to explore more on your own if you plan to stay a few more days after touring together with a professional local guide. If you love history, interested in arts, architecture or the urban legends of a city you visit, if you are crazy about stunning views and places where the most breathtaking pics are taken, this tour is for you!

What to expect
  • In the Pest side of the city you might explore the central Saint Stephen’s Basilica and its lookout tower, the Gresham Palace which today awaits its guests as the beautifully restored Four Seasons Hotel just a few metres away from the Chain Bridge and the stunning view of the Danube Embankment with all its sights listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List from the Shoes Monument to the House of Parliament or the wonderful bridges crossing over the River Danube. The cafés, bars, shops, and numerous museums and sights all along Andrássy Avenue such as the Hungarian State Opera House or the wonderful Art Nouveau building of the Parisian Department Store and the beautiful Lotz-frescoes of the Book Café inside the building also await you among others. You can even browse through Hungarian pieces of literature or travel books about Hungary in your mother tongue in the bookstore of the same building or with the help of your guide, the adventurous can find the entrance to the the cool rooftop place called 360 Bar still in Anrássy Avenue. Why wouldn’t you check out some of the famous ruin bars, just like Szimpla or Mazel Tov of the area where the Music Academy and the most important Hungarian Jewish heritage sights can also be found, namely in the historical Jewish Quarter? Still in the Pest side, the City Park is inevitable: you can visit Heroes Square, have a look at the building complex of the Széchenyi Thermal Bath and Vajdahunyad Castle, or the Ice Rink building.  Using some quick way of public transportation (subway, tram) or even the Funicular it is easy to get to the Buda side and top on the Castle Hill District. Visiting the Buda Royal Palace (which hosts the National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum today) the Matthias Church, the Fisherman’s Bastion, together with the atmosphere of the cobbled streets and the medieval residential buildings, galleries, bistros and bars, the views back on the Pest side and on the rest of the green Buda Hills with the Citadel, the Statue of Liberty, the emblematic building of the Gellért Thermal Bath or the Ottoman Turkish dome of the Rudas Baths will make your day! It's a never-ending story. Come and read a chapter for yourself!

Highly recommended tour of pat and present Jewish Budapest

Timea was an amazing guide! Besides being extremely knowledgeable, interesting, well spoken and warm, her own life experience and family history made the tour far more personal.
We’re so happy we found her online!

Dear Ofer, I highly recommend you to contact the tourism department of the Dohány Street Synagogue with your remark in connection with their entrance fee. Budapest Jewish Walk is a private guiding business which has definitely nothing to do with the entrance fee or any other service of synagogues or museums. Still hope you enjoyed your time in Budapest. Shalom. Tímea Tarjáni Owner of Budapest Jewish Walk

Fantastic for the whole family
Aug 2019
We were a family of 5 with only a short amount of time in Budapest and wanted to really get an insider's view of the past and present of Jewish life in the city. Timea was great, she made the tour informative and engaging for the kids and adults. She brought us to the main Jewish landmarks as well as quite a few off the beaten path sites that gave us a true understanding of the ghetto, the impact of the war and communism on the city, as well as some of the recent renewals that are developing. I had done some reading on the history of Budapest before the trip and found that Timea really brought the information alive. We found the planning of the tour to be quite easy and the actual tour was flexible (it was hot that day) and very enjoyable for the entire family. Highly recommend!

One of a kind walking tour with outstanding guide
Sep 2018 • Couples
We spent half a day with Timea on a private walking tour visiting many sights around Budapest and it was by far the best thing that we did during our trip. She is a wonderful person with deep knowledge and understanding about Budapest and history and brings a great perspective to the walking tour. We gave her information via email ahead of time and she used that information to take us to different sights. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Timea or the chance to have this tour. Also, she provided restaurant recommendations that were outstanding and she suggested a wonderful Turkish Bath in Buda that was lovely and she sent links via email before and afterwards of tons of useful and interesting information about Budapest. Thanks Timea!

Two Wonderful Tours with Budapest Jewish Walk
Jul 2018 • Family
Our family of five (three children ages 10, 12 and 15) were so fortunate to have taken two tours with Timea in July. She is a fantastic guide and our enjoyment of Budapest and its surrounding area can be attributed in part to her.

Our first tour was a walking tour of the city. We aren't Jewish but we felt it was important that the children (and adults) understand the impact of the Holocaust on the Jewish people in Budapest. We also wanted to understand what life is like today in Budapest. Timea was wonderful. She was great with the children (as a mom and teacher herself she was able to truly reach to their level of understanding). We also wanted to explore beyond the jewish quarter so we could get the 'lay of the land' as such on our first day in Budapest. We explored the Jewish Quarter, a ruin pub, and the Central Market Hall. She helped us get transportation passes and we explored St. Istvan basilica. It was a fantastic full day.

Our second tour with Timea was a full day trip from Budapest around the Danube Bend. Timea arranged for a minvan to take us. We first stopped in Szentendre. Timea vacations with her family in the area so she really knows that area well. We then went to Visegrad to explore the old castle and then Esztergom. The day was very long but we covered everything that we had asked for. I've written about both tours on my blog Sunsets and Roller Coasters family travel blog so if you're looking for more details, you can find it there. I don't think I'm permitted to put in links.

Our conversations with Timea started several months in advance and she was incredibly helpful in helping us plan our other days in Budapest as well.

If you're looking for a guide, don't hesitate to contact Timea! We would again in a heartbeat!

Fantastic time in Budapest
My husband and I just returned from a trip to Budapest with our friends and spent 2 days touring the city with Timea on private tours. We spent Saturday doing the city highlights tour and Sunday doing the Jewish Quarter tour. Timea truly made this a special and wonderful trip for all of us! She is knowledgeable about the city history, points out interesting highlights that help you get to know the city in a more personal way and steers you to less touristy, authentic experiences. As a really special added benefit she is a complete foodie and we had some of the best meals with her including lunch in Budapest at a local take out type place and a walk through the food market in the Jewish Quarter. The biggest treat for my husband was snacking on goose gribnes in the market - see his smile of pure joy in the photo! Thank you Timea for making our time in Budapest so terrific!

Time Does It Again!
May 2018 • Friends
After taking Timea's Budapest Walking Tours two years ago, we booked her for a visit to towns along the Danube bend. We started in Szentendre for several hours and then to Ezetergom to see the basilica. While we tried to see the castle ruins in Visegrad but it was very busy that day with a long wait. Timi arranged for a delightful visit with a lavendar farmer. She arranged for a private minibus and made the entire day interesting and easy.

Thank you once again.

Apr 2018 • Family
Timea gave my young daughter (4 years old) and I a private custom tour of Budapest including the Jewish quarter. Our walking tour was the highlight of our visit. Timea was extremely knowledgeable and lovely to spend time with. She went at a pace that was comfortable for my daughter and I and she was patient and kind and helpful. I truly can't say enough great things about working with Timea! Her English is perfect and she made everything effortless for us. If you are visiting Budapest, you should contact her for a tour!

Amazing Day
Jun 2017 • Couples
We really go lucky when we found Timea for our tour of Budapest, she is a real jewel. We were on a river cruise and wanted a private tour for the 1 day in port. I found Timea on line and she had great reviews and so we booked her. Best decision. Although we started off a little rough, our ship gave us wrong information about where we were to dock, Timea figured it out very quickly and found us. She impressed us with her ability to fix a potentially bad problem. So we started our walking tour. Timea made sure to show us all the major sights of Budapest and also include the Jewish tour. What could be better, two tours in one. She recommended public transportation and it was perfect. She knows it the best way to get around. She also took us to the best ice cream shop in town. After a very fun filled day, we said our good-byes, but we will stay in touch in case we ever return. I'd use her again.

Excellent guide!
May 2016 • Business
My husband and I went on a private Jewish walking tour with Timi. She is an excellent, extremely knowledgeable guide and a pleasure to be with. Her knowledge of Jewish Budapest, past and present, is extensive and she speaks with both intellectual insight as well as informed personal family history making the tour both informative and emotionally evocative. Timi has a breadth of knowledge beyond Jewish Budapest- she also teaches literature- and I felt like I wanted to take her everywhere we went in Budapest to benefit from her wealth of information and insight into the past and current political and social scene. She is extremely flexible and responded graciously and efficiently to our informing her we would need an abridged tour because of a change in our plans. She piled as much in as possible, although there was clearly so much more we could have experienced. Timi is involved in current (Jewish) human Rights work and an activist working to preserve the history of the substantial presence of Jews in prewar Budapest and acknowledge the responsibility of the Hungarian citizens in their extermination. She is passionate about her work and her tour is all the better from this. Timi is comfortable and fun to be around, non-intrusive and not unnecessarily chatty. A perfect guide and we look forward to getting her more complete tour when we return to Budapest.
