Trail Journeys - Otago Rail Trail & Roxburgh Gorge Trail
Jan 2020
A group of 14 of us embarked on the Otago Central Rail Trail (OCRT) on 30 Jan 2020 from MIddlemarch. We hired our bikes through Trail Journeys who also arranged most of the accommodation. 10 of us road the whole OCRT (4 days) and then also 8 continued on and rode the Roxburgh Gorge Trail (1 day), total 5 days of biking. 2 of the ladies joined us for one day of biking (day 3) and hired ebikes for that day which was between Wedderburn and Omakau. 2 of the group did no biking (they drove the cars).

Of the 10 riders, 8 hired "comfort bikes" (hybrid) and 2 hired ebikes. The 2 ladies on day 3 also hired ebikes. We picked up our bikes from the Trail Journeys Middlemarch depot (their main depot is at Clyde). They opened at 8.30am and we were able to go over the itinery, be fitted and comfortable with the setup (of the bikes) in about 30 mins for the group. Very relaxing no problems. The hybrid bikes (wide tyres, front suspension, rack, comfy seat, 24 gears, etc - $50 a day) performed well and were in good working order. We were also given puncture repair kits including replacement tubes, though we didn't need to use these. They had panniers to hire at $5 per pair per day. For the 1 day hire for 2 ebikes, Trail Journeys dropped off the bikes at our accommodation the day before and picked them up at the end of the next day at our new location for a fair and reasonable cost. This worked very well.

We had one problem with one of the bikes (day 2/3), this didn't hinder us and Trail Journeys swapped the bike over literally within hours of us raising concerns, no cost no questions (they have vans that run up and down the trails each day). Very happy with the responsiveness of this. I found the bike (hybrid) a slightly different "feel" to my own hybrid, it was probably slightly more upright than I was used too but this was fine. The ergonomic handlebar grips grew on me (think I will buy myself some), and found the seat was good, a little bit of discomfort day 2 and then I was totally fine. I do about 100 - 150km cycling a week so my "seat" was already used to a bit of cycling. The riders who used the ebikes were very happy with them ($100 a day at the time) and I think one or 2 of the others (who road Hybrids) may upgrade to ebikes if they ever do this again, so if you are unsure of your fitness and you have some extra dollars, an ebike might be a good idea, particularly for the Roxburgh Gorge trail which has a few steeper ascents. Of note it was such an enjoyable and wholesome experience I can see some of the group doing it again sometime in the future.

Trail journeys also arranged most of our accommodation (although had done some of my own research, and already knew some of the places I wanted our group to stay at). All accommodation worked out very well, ... some were exceptional ... but will put out other reviews for the accommodation shortly.

So very happy with Trail Journeys (thanks Sandra) their equipment, organisation, responsiveness to problems and personable touch. Would be happy to use them again. I notice that the other 2 operators out of Middlemarch also have very good reviews and think that they are all likely very good and professional and you would probably be happy with any of them. Perhaps a tribute to kiwi hospitality and organisation generally.

First Class with Trail Journeys
Feb 2020
As a seventy something male traveller I could not fault Trail Journeys and their entire team.I chose the 5 day/4 night guided tour from Clyde to Middlemarch and had no difficulty with the terrain.I also rode the optional first day ride to Roxburgh Gorge which was quite spectacular following the river. Our tour guide Wayne was excellent with his vast amount of knowledge, fantastic support and fresh morning teas welcoming our group along the trail.
Great accommodation and generous meals together with end of daily ride activities added to the experience.

Amazing

We went on a 3 day, 60km a day, cycle tour from Queenstown to Middlemarch. It was about 50 of us. We had a super time. The bicycles were very good and had gel padded saddles. The staff was very attentive, friendly and professional. You can also chose an e-bike (very convenient for day 2). We would do it again.

Otago rail Trail Clyde to Middlemarch- 4 days in April 2018 - Fab experience
Apr 2018 • Couples
This was the last part of our 3 week holiday in NZ from the UK so the confidence we got from the pre-travel arrangements was reassuring so we knew everything was going to work. The pickup at Queenstown airport worked well and we were impressed by the welcome we got and the professionalism of the bike handover - we had brought our own pedals and they were fitted for us with no fuss. Some great advice to try the river route to Alexandra which got our legs in, and a good briefing about where rest stops and food and drinks were available. All the accommodation was good and our gear was always there when we arrived. Although there we just the two of us, we passed the same few other groups several times over the days and in the evenings and so it was the best of both worlds to be able to cycle at your own pace but still meet other people. The bikes were clean and well maintained - gears clicked nicely into place, and the handover at the Middlemarch end was easy, with all our luggage transported to the railway station for the Taieri Gorge train trip to Dunedin.
We would highly recommend Trail Journeys and are hoping that by the time we get to return to NZ that Trail Journeys will be doing a similar service on the Alps to Ocean!

It is great to hear that you enjoyed your cycling trip with Trail Journeys and thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are hoping at some stage in the future to possibly be involved in the A20 Trail but it will not be for a while yet until the trail is fully completed.

We did a day of the rail trail, the roxburgh gorge and the clutha gold river ride.
We organised trail journeys to drop us off at our starting points as we based ourselves in Clyde. Terrific drivers who gave us a personal tour as they delivered the bags of bike groups.
The staff were terrific with their advice and accommodated us with our own bikes quite happily.
Loved the biking..but not the headwind for the last 2 hours of the rail trail. Should have been picked up at Chatto Creek!!
The Roxurgh Gorge was fantastic, and the boat ride a bonus part.

Double Thumbs Up!!
Apr 2018 • Friends
We cycled Central Otago Rail Trail (CORT) over 6 days. We flew into Queenstown and TJs collected us in their mini-bus and transported us to Clyde. We were able to get fitted for our bikes that afternoon so that we could start cycling the next morning after a leisurely breakfast. This is the second self-guided cycling tour that we have undertaken with TJs. Their staff are uniformly wonderful, the equipment is great, well-organised, they have great relationships with all the food and accommodation providers along the trail which, in turn, means we are welcomed by all. All bookings were arranged by email from Australia. The TJs team will recommend and arrange side excursions (we did curling in Naseby and finished with Taieri Gorge rail trip to Dunedin). All of these are expertly co-ordinated. TJs have recently become part of World Expeditions and we can only suggest that they don't tinker too much with process because it is superb.

3-day cycling trip Clyde-Middlemarch
Feb 2018 • Couples
We had a fabulous 3-day experience with Trail Journeys in early January. All arrangements were handled with professionalism, efficiency, skill, and friendly good humour. We were picked up at the Queenstown airport and transported in a comfortable coach to Trail Journeys large centre in Clyde. The bikes were already adjusted to our size and were of very good quality. We were given maps, detailed itinerary instructions, advice about contact in the case of problems, and then we were off.

Although weather was not ideal at times (windy, some rain), the cycling was fantastic. Beautiful and isolated countryside.

Very satisfied with both nights' accommodation and breakfast in the morning (Lauder School and Waipiata Hotel). Much smaller than expected, and very friendly, clean and comfortable. Finished the trip with the Tahieri Gorge train to Dunedin on the afternoon of day 3, also arranged by Trail Journeys.

Highly recommend this company. Excellent customer service and seem truly interested in asking the experience special for their guests.

3 Day Rail Trail from Clyde to Middlemarch
Oct 2017 • Friends
We took the three day Otago Central Rail Trail option from Clyde to Middlemarch over Labour Weekend.

The organisation through Trail Journeys couldn't have been better - probably some of the best service I've ever had from a company from start to finish. Claire organised all our accommodation (and sorted new accommodation when one was unavailable at the last minute) and trip, bike hire, as well as the Train through Taeri Gorge (highly recommended by the way!).

We had Nev pick us up in Queenstown, and all the drivers were fantastic, friendly, knowledgeable about the trail and area and everything was so well run.

When we arrived at Clyde to begin the trail there was a full booklet, map, plans for the trip and even our bikes all laid out ready to go.

Cannot recommend these guys enough - they are by far one of the best companies I've ever dealt with. Organisation top notch and don't think I could even suggest anything to be improved! Our whole party loved the experience!!

Great service and awesome bike ride
Apr 2017 • Solo
I had contacted Trail Journeys to inquire about cycling the Central Otago Rail Trail. With the response email Claire provided me with the information on the full package: itinerary planning, suggestions for accommodation and all necessary transport to and from the trail. That was perfect service as it made things so easy! Staff was very friendly, helpful and enthusiastic. The rental bike was in good condition and fitted to my size. So I had an excellent start in Middlemarch. The accommodation choices were great and added to the overall experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the 3 days on the trail with its stunning scenery. I might cycle it in the reverse direction if I have the chance to come back to NZ again. Thanks a lot Claire, for the great service and your sense of humour!

Otago Rail Trail - best week ever!
Mar 2017 • Couples
Can't recommend Trail Journeys enough for doing the Otago Rail Trail. Correspondence prior to the week was great, organisation was seamless and the actual week - from the pickup from our hotel to the last day on the Taieri Gorge train couldn't have gone smoother. Bikes were excellent, accommodation was excellent - not sure how much Trail Journeys had to do with the weather but it was also excellent. Would highly recommend to anyone to use Trail Journeys and will definitely be looking to book another cycle trail through them. Thanks so much Trail Journeys - it was one of the best trips I've ever done - right here in our own backyard!
