Highlights
Explore scenic Milford Sound with this intimate South Island nature cruise
Take in the vistas of Fiordland National Park from the boat observation deck
Learn about the wildlife and geology from your naturalist guide's commentary
Get a top value with drinks, optional meal, and glacial water taste included
What to expect
Make your way to the Milford Sound Visitor Centre, where you’re welcomed aboard the vessel by your captain before boarding our spacious, modern catamaran. Sip a hot cup of coffee or tea, and take advantage of spacious outdoor decks or the warm indoor seating with large viewing windows. Throughout the cruise, you’ll pass glacier-carved rock walls, such as the 5,550-foot (1,692-meter) Mitre Peak, jutting up from the fiord. Due to the boat’s smaller size, your captain comes close enough to the tumbling waterfalls to offer a taste of the pure waters from the frothy cascades.  Search for fur seals, bottlenose dolphins and Fiordland crested penguins as you listen to commentary about this postcard-perfect landscape in the World Heritage–listed Fiordland National Park. At the end of the cruise, your captain returns you to the Visitor Centre.

A great experience
We booked with Southern Glacier Helicopters - which are Southern Discoveries heli partners. They flew us in and out of Milford Sound. We joined Southern Discoveries for the cruise. You can tell Southern Discoveries is one of the most experienced tour operators in this area.
The entire trip was 5 stars. The boat was well kept. There was ample space both inside and outside such that the experience wasnt crowded.
We had near perfect conditions on the day we went. Milford Sound is just spectacular and you cant really get enough of it. The cruise takes you right out to the Tasman, stopping and Sterling falls on your way back in. The commentary was informative. Overall a wonderful day spent in Milford Sound.

Amazing cruise, but be aware of $20 parking charge
We really enjoyed the nature cruise. Saw amazing sights throughout the whole cruise, including glacier-carved valleys, huge waterfalls, and interesting rock formations. We also briefly paused in the mouth of the sound, at the border with the sea. The guides were very knowledgable and friendly. Not being made aware of a $20 charge for parking was disappointing however.

Kia ora Tom, Thanks so much for taking the time to pass on your feedback. We're stoked you enjoyed the cruise with us in Milford Sound. We're sorry you didn't realise about the car park pricing, the car park is not managed by us but we do put information about car park pricing on all our booking confirmation emails. Very unique experience, wonderful place to cruise. We traveled in a heavy rainy day - the best time to see hundreds of waterfalls together!

Great staff - spectacular trip!
This was my 3rd time on Milford Sound but the first since the 90's! The stand out for me this time was how friendly and welcoming the staff were! Dan and all his crew were just great - positive, interactive and keen that we had a good time. The lady at the desk was also lovely! We particularly enjoyed Dan's commentary - not the usual obvious repeated spiel but a generous genuine delivery as if it was the first time he'd shared all the interesting facts!

Oh and the fiord was simply spectacular of course!

We noticed there was just nobody in Milford - we had just 10 fellow cruisers and 3 crew. And lots of the larger boats have been moth-balled waiting for the world to come back!

Now is the PERFECT time to visit Milford and Te Anau and enjoy the peace and quiet without the crowds and support these communities!

So pleased we did :-)

Milford Sound Nature Tour
Mar 2021 • Friends
Very comfortable vessel, beautiful scenery.

Everyone just loved the bottlenose dolphins catching the free ride between the 2 hulls of the catamaran.

Very impressed with the skipper who was also the nature expert, he was well informed and so professional, we all really appreciated not having to listen to the usual 'bloke' borderline jokes.....

Captain gave a very good account of the sound and expressed gratitude that the small amount of people on board, came. Tough for a once extremely busy entity. Did their best to keep a brave face. Day was spot-on.

A really lovely afternoon trip !
Jan 2021
We had a really beautiful cruise on the boat, last sailing of the day at 3.15pm, so much fewer people which was lovely.
The staff /crew were super lovely , friendly and welcoming.
The views of Milford Sound were amazing, so beautiful.
It didn’t rain which was really nice ! There are still some waterfalls to see when it’s not raining so that was great.
We had a really great time and were thoroughly welcomed and would recommend !
Thankyou so much Southern Discoveries !

Beautiful rainy February day!
Feb 2021 • Solo
Went in the perfect weather window after it had been raining all night and day. I went as a solo traveler in February and saw a pod of dolphins, many seals, and beautiful waterfalls everywhere, and was 1 of only 3 people ok board for the last tour of the day. Incredible experience and very friendly and knowledgeable skipper and guide :) worth the extra $10 to hit that weather window and have the knowledge of the locals so kindly shared with us.
