Probus Group tour of the gardens
Our Probus group were very impressed with the knowledge of the Explorer Guide who took us round, however, we picked a very cold and windy day which spoilt the experience a little, as the Botanic Gardens are truly amazing.

      Incredible day.
Absolutely beautiful place to visit. I have been there personally a few times and was thrilled to take the school children there. We went on the guided bus tour and learnt so much. Highly recommend.

      Great Garden Visit
We loved visiting the botanic gardens as there was just so much to see even in May. Our favorite spots included Guifoyle’s Volcano National Herbarium Ornamental lake Tropical greenhouse Many different garden themes We avoided the Terrace as this place was packed with long waits.

      Visit with kids
Best way to see the vast expanse of the gardens in a limited time. Just long enough to hold the attention of young kids. Pity winter is not a colourful time of year

      Forest Bathing, a lovey experience
Dave, Jorge and Heidi were our lovely guides for the Forest Bathing experience. The information and insight about this practice and the experience overall was a really lovely few hours spent in the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens. Thank you.

      Royal Botanic Gardens
The tour guide for the mini bus was warm and knowledgeable. She welcomed us aboard, letting us choose our seats freely. She also provided blankets to keep us warm during the half-hour tour and spoke with a musical and enchanting voice. We had a good view of Royal Botanic Gardens

      A botanical bounty
The tour through the gardens was leisurely and informative. The bus has a great sound system, so the commentary was very clear. Verity spoke with passion about the history and the plants of the gardens, we enjoyed the tour.

      Free guided walk.
A very enjoyable and engaging 'free guided walking tour of the gardens.' Dennis our guide was indeed passionate about showing us through the gardens. As a visitor from Sydney, who didn't want to battle the school holiday crowds or shop, this was perfect and reinvigorating!

An excellent overview of the gardens
Guide was very informative and fun, the explorer was comfortable and well equipped for the intermittent rain. It was a good way to get an overview of the gardens before exploring sections that interested us later in the day.

      Lightscape Melbourne 2024
The experience of Lightscape itself was magical and highly enjoyable. What I did find an issue was that while there are banners around the exterior of the gardens for the event, there never was an arrow to indicate where to go and we walked almost entirely around the exterior of the gardens. As a disabled person, this was very onerous and a very bad start to the evening. Maybe print on the tickets to use the Visitor Centre entrance. That will tell Google where to take people who do not know the area. Also - there were NO affordable souvenirs in the visitor centre commemmorating this worthy event, not even a fridge magnet. There were teatowels and lollies of various kinds, that is it. In fact there are not even affordable souvenirs of the Royal Botanic Gardens. The goods in the visitor centre may be lovely, but not really what one would expect as souvenirs.

An ideal way to have a first look at the Botanical garden and learn some of its plants and history. You can then go and visit your favourite sites by foot.

The walk was one of the best indigenous-guided walks that I've been on. Dan, our guide, was very personable and knowledgeable, and was able to share his story in a way that underscored the effects of colonialism on indigenous people. As we learned about native uses for some of the plants, we also learned how diametrically opposed Aboriginal and European worldviews were during the time that Australia was being colonized (and continue to be in modern times).

Den was able to impart serious information while also keeping the mood light-hearted. He showed us a number of plants and talked about their usages. I think it is a good way for people to know more about the history of First Nations people and also experience the gardens.

Our guide Den led us through the gardens, mainly along the Australian Forest Walk. He pointed out various plants and explained their traditional uses and significance to the Indigenous people. Den offered us a glimpse into the relationship Indigenous people have with the land and some of his personal experiences. I’m very grateful that I’ve been able to join this walk and would recommend it to other visitors to the RBG.

We thoroughly enjoyed our Aboriginal Heritage Walk with Uncle Den. His warmth and humour was engaging. The group was comprised of people from several different countries: Ireland, US, Germany and Australia. As a Melbournian, non-indigenous person, it was great to see these travellers seeking an authentic indigenous experience to enrich their understanding of Australia.
The group particularly responded to Uncle Den showing us how the first nations people used different plants and also responded very positively to him sharing some reflections on our history, the Aboriginal flag and reconciliation.

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about some of the trees and their uses and am very grateful to Dan??? for sharing so much of his life with us . Reconciliation and respect for each other's culture and the importance of our relationship with the earth was made very clear.

My expectations of the tour was to have more knowledge about the local indigenous people and to hear more about the use of the flora and fauna than we got but wegot other things I wasnt expecting.
I love the botanical gardens. It is high on the list of my favourite places to go in Melbourne.

I absolutely loved the Aboriginal Heritage Walk. Myself and three others were fortunate enough to be guided by Sam May. Sam was incredibly kind, engaging and insightful. I am planning on returning with my family members. I would recommend this tour to anybody wanting to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

The gardens are beautiful, more versatile than the ones in Sydney, and you definitely get more out of them with a guide!

Ours was nice but somewhat disoriented; we started late and it felt that we could have covered a lot more in 90 mins if the guide had been more efficient and to the point. It's a shame, as we were looking to learn and were left with a feeling that we only touched the surface in a setup that could have given us a lot more.

Judging by other reviews, this is however not the case with all guides, so I'd still recommend giving it a go.

Hi Anna, thank you so much for taking the time to write a review about our Free Guided Walk held Tuesday to Sunday by our lovely volunteers. We are so happy to hear you had a wonderful time on several different guided walks and each one provided you with something new and interesting. The wonderful thing about our Free Guided Walks is that they can be very personalized based on your interests. Our volunteers are endlessly knowledgeable about the gardens from history to plantings to specific garden areas. They always have an interesting tail to tell!

My family loved the aboriginal heritage walk. My mother went home to Arizona, and recognized that there are some Eucaliptus trees in Arizona. She loved knowing that the smell in Australia is Lemon gum. My brother got to hold the walking stick and kept getting called the wrong name, it was hilarious. We had a great time.

This was a great tour, highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning more about the ongoing strength and ingenuity of Aboriginal people in Australia. There were mostly international visitors on our tour, which was lovely to see. Being Australian, and gardeners, we already knew a lot about the various plants and their uses, but we loved the opportunity to slow down and focus on the stories. The yarn at the start and end of the tour was the best part.

What a superb way to spend our third day in Melbourne walking around a guided tour of the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Aboriginal Heritage Walk.
We had three wonderful guides who each gave us their knowledge and experience within the Melbourne area and in particular the gardens. We sat through some wonderful explanations of the history of life in the area and Australia, coupled with some artifacts that they showed us.
We saw many species of tree and plant surrounded by wonderful scenery, a garden separated from the madness of a busy city.
This is another must see experience.
