About
Our well known Nukakamma Canoe Trail which is the only Green Flag Status
Canoe Trail in South Africa. The journey begins at the Sundays River Adventures’ jetty aboard our 4-metre double canoes and continues for 13km along the Sundays River to your overnight accommodation.
You’ll experience the thrill and excitement on the river while looking out for the more than 200 recorded species of birds, and the sneaky mullet fish actively jumping into or over the canoes. Keep your eyes peeled for kudu, bushbuck, porcupines, Cape otters, vervet monkeys and other wildlife hiding in the bushes along the banks of the river.
Finish off your day with a well-deserved barbeque meal and a cold beverage while enjoying the view of the beautiful sunset from our deck.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- carolyne9630 contributionsAll those wonderful animals!Such a great day - zoomed around the less crowded private game reserve in elevated jeeps with our guide, Norman. He regaled us with local legends (long ago, when animals could talk …) as we searched for the next siting. We saw an elephant, rhino, hippo, a newborn giraffe with its mother (and a kaleidoscope of giraffes as well), and lions!Written 31 May 2024
- CelticChick520 contributionsFun Sandboarding! Great instructor!Great little tour operation! We were the only ones on our trip! Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. He was very patient and kind and ensured that I had a great time! He even modified things for me since my knees don't bend that well! I had a blast and felt so accomplished after doing this :) At the end, you can go down a steep dune and skim into the water on your belly (with a board of course!). Awesome!Written 7 May 2024
- chrisandhelenfry0 contributionsGreat sand boarding tripMy husband did the sand boarding trip with Robert and I was the photographer! It was a fantastic experience. Robert was very personable and professional and it was great that we were the only ones on the dunes. The views are fantastic and my husband who is a snowboarder thoroughly enjoyed the experience. You have to be reasonably fit to keep climbing back up the dunes but well worth it ( I’m told!) We swam in the river then Robert then took us for a boat trip up the river which was lovely. Thoroughly recommend this activity and thank you Robert.Written 28 November 2023
- Fearless416353433210 contributionsHorrible experienceLoad shedding then 6 hour power outage then when power came on plugs didnt work so no tea or coffee. The beds were hard and uncomfortable. The R2500 breakage fee were not stated clearly in the terms and conditions. Some of the sliding doors upstairs wouldnt open.Written 18 June 2023
- Robert H0 contributionsVery enjoyable half day Addo tripVery personable and knowledgeable guide made for a great introduction to Addo Elephant National Park with Norman. We were a party of two and were really lucky to have seen elephants, a feeding lion as well as zebras and warthogs plus dung beetles plus so much more. Thanks to Norman and Sunday Rivers Adventures for a great outing!Written 25 January 2023
- JudyH22440 contributionsUnforgettable experienceOvernight canoeing trip on the Sundays river was an experience not easily forgotten. It is a 12.5km canoe trip on the fastest flowing river in South Africa. It was our first time to participate in any canoeing adventure. What an awesome day it was. Despite one of our team capsizing 3 times, the experience was unforgettable. The river was quiet with very few boats on it. We were taken care of from the beginning of the trip until we checked out the following day. I will recommend this to any person, experienced or not, fit or unfit. The trip is not a marathon and you are free to complete at your own space.Written 8 December 2021
- StephenXXXXX0 contributionsGREAT TRIP UP THE SUNDAYS RIVER AND FUN SANDBOARDINGWe thoroughly enjoyed the boat ride with Adam up the river and then he dropped us off to do the sand boarding which was great fun for all of us. I give these two excursions 5 out of 5 but where they fell down was at the Reception and service at the restaurant. Upon our arrival it was a bit rough and ready there and there was a heated discussion going on between staff members. We ordered something light to eat before going up the river but it seemed to take forever to arrive and had to rush to eat it as it was time to go. Need to jack this area up. The boat ride and sand boarding were great excursions to do and if in the area then do yourself a favour and enjoy.Written 9 June 2020
- lorrainesmith340 contributionsExcellent Lazy River CruiseNice hour and a half relaxing drift down the river towards the sea. Adam our guide was a very pleasant chap. Would recommend.Written 7 March 2020

We had hired it for 2 1/2 hours. We cruised down the river to the Sand Dunes. Our children enjoyed sand boarding.Steep climb up the dunes, And then whizzing down on boards well waxed by the crew. Great views and miles of sand dunes.Very good birdwatching.Excellent!Written 30 March 2018
- Martin B0 contributions5 Welsh Rugby Supporters. We were 5 Welsh Rugby supporters who booked a 2.5 hour Sunday afternoon boat trip up and down the Sunday River. We took our own drinks and snacks as stated on their website. The boat’s captain, Marius has great passion for and knowledge of the nature of the area, its history and we had a very special experience and we all enjoyed the trip on the water. Beautiful scenery. We also saw a variety of bird life and also some monkeys running to and from the banks of the river before disappearing in to the undergrowth. The river was filled with fish and it was fun manoeuvring up and down the river. Thanks for a lovely trip Marius (Captain Ahab).Written 13 March 2018
- Frances A0 contributionsDying fish river cruiseWe booked a late afternoon, 2.5 hour cruise for R370 pp. We were very disappointed by what we got for our money, as we didn't get any drinks or snacks, and the cruise only lasted for 2 hours. We also didn't go very far up the river and all we really saw was the houses of Colchester. The most awkward moment of the trip was when a fish jumped into the boat and we had to listen to this fish dying for 20 minutes. All in all, very disappointed and would not recommend their river tours.Written 10 January 2018
- jcampher0 contributionsWe loved every minute of it!We booked a half day experience that included a 90 minute boat trip, a 90 minute sand boarding experience and a lunch at the restaurant. The boat trip took us to the river mouth where we had the opportunity to climb the sand dunes and had the most beautiful view of the beach, the bay and the valley. Then we went sand boarding - and as first timers we didn't know what to expect. After a short briefing session, we were allowed to practice and just have fun at our own pace, with no pressure. Our children and grand children thoroughly enjoyed it with us - the youngest 4 years old and the grandpa 60 years old. The lunch served was a home made burger with real meat patties, and home made potato chips. A lovely day spent with this company which we highly recommend you add to your to-do list.Written 8 January 2018
- Lindy Andre v0 contributionsActivities and AdventuresThe most outstanding views of sand sea and sky. Sundays river mouth and dunes definitely a hidden secret. This is right on our doorstep and at the Addo entrance. Definitely a must to add onto your Addo trip should be done Sandboarding and sunset cruises. Karl is a great host and the evening cruises provide sightings of fish eagles, kudu and even elephants. Highly revommendedWritten 8 January 2018
