Overview
Discover the Vienna Woods on a half-day guided tour. Led by an expert guide, visit the Mayerling hunting lodge, where scandal once rocked the royal family, as well as the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz, constructed in 1133. Soak up a scenic boat ride on the Seegrotte, the largest subterranean lake in Europe. Then, journey back to your original departure point, spotting Liechtenstein Castle on the way.
What to Expect
From a meeting point in Central Vienna, you’ll meet your expert guide and take off for the Vienna Woods in your coach.

Pass the Roman city of Baden, made popular by its thermal springs, as you venture through the scenic valley of Helenental. Stop at the commemorative chapel that was formerly Mayerling, the Imperial hunting lodge. Learn from your guide how scandal rocked the royal family in 1889 when the only son of Emperor Franz Joseph, Crown Prince Rudolph, made a suicide pact with his mistress Baronesse Vetsera and both were found dead inside the lodge.

Continue to the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz, dating back to 1133, and the oldest continuously occupied Cistercian monastery in the world. Explore the medieval cloister that houses the remains of the last member of the noble Babenberger family. Then, arrive at the Seegrotte for a picturesque boat cruise across the largest subterranean lake in Europe.

Your half-day tour will conclude with transportation back to Vienna, passing the Liechtenstein Castle on the way.

Pleasant day trip

Would have liked to spend more time in woodlands and less in the monastery. Tour leader was ok. not very engaging.

Fabulous half day outside of the city

My kids loved the Vienna Woods. Not because of the woods perse because you don't get out of the bus in the woods for a hike or to admire nature but for what sights we did see in the "Woods." First was Mayerling. A nice...More

This was a comfortable bus tour out into the countryside around Vienna. The trip through Baden went pretty quick so can't say we saw much of this pretty looking town. Like a previous reviewer, I was disappointed that our tour was in two languages -...More

Good, not great

Comfortable motor coach. Nice drive through Baden. The tour guide was polite but not the least bit warm. It seemed he was just going through the motions. The sights are only modestly interesting. I was hoping to see the grave site of Mary Vetsera, but...More
