Overview
Guarantee your desired time slot by booking a tour of the Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel in advance. With a guide, and kitted out with provided equipment, you'll marvel at the changing colors of the lava rock formations while walking in the path of lava that flowed during the Leitahraun eruption. Plus, you'll discover historical info that you may otherwise have missed out on.
What to Expect
At your confirmed time, you'll meet your guide and small group at Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel, 30 minutes from downtown Reykjavik. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and warm, waterproof clothing.

Your guide provides you with a helmet and light before leading you into the tunnel. Listen as they point out some of the tunnel’s most interesting features and learn about the changing colors of the lava rock formations as you walk. Large rocks make the tunnel difficult to traverse in some places, but a footbridge and several paths have been built over the roughest terrain. Lights have also been incorporated in order to highlight the changing colors and clearly show the powerful volcanic activity that formed the tunnel during the Leitahraun eruption, which occurred around 5,200 years ago.

Your tour ends after about one hour of exploring the tunnel. Make your own way back to Reykjavik or onto your next destination.

Accessible and informative

I wanted to do the extreme tour as I am an adventure seeker but my friend is quite the opposite so we did the standard tour. Despite this I very much enjoyed learning about the history of the tunnel and how it formed, seeing the...More

Something different

My boyfriend and I enjoyed the tour, it was something different to do outside of the golden circle, blue lagoon etc. as we’ve been all of this before. Would recommend, especially when the weather’s bad!

Last tour of the day

If you’re driving from Reykjavík, pay attention to traffic, we almost missed the tour! We were glad to have made it as it was really informative, and beautiful to see! There were only 5 of us in the tour so it was very casual and...More

Beautiful rock formations, colours, lighting and a great guide

I visited the tunnel during my visit to Iceland over Christmas and it was a great experience. It is quite striking how vivid the colours are and how beautiful the lava patters were that formed as the hot lava flowed in the area and subsequently...More

Great fun, but manageable with younger children

This is a fun way to spend an hour, clambering over (small) rocks, exploring a long lava tunnel and learning about how it was formed. Our guide was really interesting and we all have a great time. The Extreme tour sounds amazing but not for...More

The lights are out for a few minutes, but you're standing on a wooden walkway, in a large cavern, with railings nearby. No one in our group of about 20-25 people had any problem with the darkness. The guide continued his... More
