WHAT A WONDERFUL TOUR.. Xenia and Eleni and Christos, we had the best time wandering around with you, and enjoying the food, drinks and the history you gave us. We didn't know about "name day" but it will give us something else to celebrate (Christos, sorry about you and I having our name day on Christmas). Best, best tour ever and a wonderful ending with lunch and music. You all were knowledgeable, organized and just FUN.

Insightful Food Tour
Sep 2019
We enjoyed our food tour in the Plaka with Eleni. She was knowledgable, well organized and we enjoyed her company. Eleni took us to a place that specialized in traditional Greek "pies", a well established traditional "kafenion" and a "pantopolion that is owned by three former attorneys. We enjoyed each stop and were most impressed with Eleni's knowledge of Greek cuisine, culture, traditions and customs. Even though we are of Greek descent, the insight provided by Eleni and experienced by us first hand during the tour were much appreciated! We recommend this tour to all who are interested in Greek cuisine and the local food culture.

Absolutely Fantastic!

This tour was outstanding. We wanted to experience Athens by walking the city and enjoying the food, drinks and culture. Eleni was an incredible guide - providing historical context, taking us to some unbelievable restaurants and cafes, and helping us explore some of the famous historical sites. Her knowledge and love of Greece made the tour that much more impactful. I highly recommend Epiculiar, and Eleni in particular. It made a great trip even better!!

This was a great tour! The guide was very knowledgeable. It felt like we spent the morning with an old friend. There is no better way to experience the culture of a country than to learn about its cuisine.

A wonderful tour to hidden places
Oct 2018 • Couples
We wanted to explore Greek food on a tour by a local. Therefore, we chose this tour. Xenia gave us a marvelous tour which exceeded our expectations. She took us to various local spots, ending up in a specialty shop called Pantoplion, which features different types of olive oils, wines, cheeses, meats, wines, beers and spirits. It was a truly wonderful experience, and the olive oil tasting was informative and eye opening. Xenia also told us facts about our hotel building and other sites in Athens which we did not know. We highly recommend taking a tour with Xenia.

A Must Do when visiting Athens!!!
Sep 2018 • Couples
Our flight arrived into Athens in the morning. I knew we needed something to keep us going for a few hours. The concierge suggested this tour.

A great way to start our trip to Greece! We were met by both Xenia & Eleni for the 2 couples at our hotel.

The walking tour consisted of history, culture and of course, food!

They were a delight and so excited to share this experience with us. As well, they emailed us pictures they took of us enjoying the experience.

We did have a 1/2 day tour planned already of the city, Acropolis museum and of course the Acropolis the following morning before we headed to Santorini. The food tour was the perfect compliment to our visit to Athens.

We were very lucky to have the wonderful Xenia look after us in Athens.
We have done many great food and cultural tours in other countries, and the
2 that we did with Epiculiar in first Athens and then Thessaloniki were the best in terms of food, cultural experience & the hosts enthusiasm and knowledge of their cities.
Thank you!

Great introduction to Greek food/coffee and culture!
Jul 2018 • Couples
Our tours guides, Eleni and Xenia met me and my husband at our hotel, to start the tour. Along the way to our first stop our guide gave us some history about Greece and pointed out some of the important buildings of interest. Our first stop was at a local coffee shop, which we would have never found on our own. What a treat! Greek coffee is the best! We also sampled some sweet treats! What a great way to start our tour. We stopped at the Central Market in Athens where all the fish, meat and produce is sold. We also stopped at other local shops and everyone was very friendly. Our last stop was for lunch at a small family owned restaurant served with wine and all the Greek delicacies. We wished we had more time but we had to rush back to our hotel for a massage that we had scheduled. Time flies so don't plan anything else in case it runs a bit longer. Great tour and guides!

Dear michellelees42, Thank you for the great review of your experience with Epiculiar in Athens! We are happy you enjoyed the time you spent with Eleni and Xenia. As locals with lots of passion for Greek food and culture they for sure know how to share that passion! It is great to hear you liked Greek coffee so much. Visiting a big city such as Athens can be challenging in the sense of finding amazing places known only to locals (so it’s always helpful and more joyful to have a local host by your side). We are glad you liked the market and the other shops & restaurants, as well as the devotion of the owners to share the best of what Greece has to offer in terms of food and hospitality. We hope you enjoyed your massage after the tour and had the time to reflect on the memorable day spent with Eleni and Xenia! Cheers!

A wonderful treat in Athens
Jul 2018 • Family
This tour was a fantastic way to get a real feel for the city and its spectacular food. Our hostess, Xenia, and host,Thanasis, were a delight to be with and it was very clear from the start how carefully they planned our stops knowing we had 3 children ages 13, 11 and 8 along with us. The merchants and restaurant owners were so friendly and accommodating and made each stop unique and memorable. At the end of our stay in Athens we asked our kids what their favorite thing was and they all agreed it was this tour!!!!!

Wonderful Koukaki neighborhood tour!
Oct 2017 • Friends
Oh my, what a day with Eleni from Myrago! We met her at the Acropolis (would have been good to have known a way to identify each other…but eventually we “recognized”each other.
First stop in the Koukaki neighborhood was a coffee shop.bookstore where we were given a brief but thorough lesson in Greek history. (I definitely must have missed a few chapters in high school and college!). We were plied with Greek coffee and “sweet spoons” of quince, raw and cooked, and some orange…like jams. Delicious!
On to another bakery started by a man whose children now run it…and a business next door. Fun to see the “real” Greece neighborhood.
At the business next door we had “Three (3) cents” drinks…delicious!…sparkling grapefruit…I hope it makes it to MY neighborhood. A delightful man and a young woman gave up a seat for us so we could all sit together.
The next bakery/shop served a number of things including a gel made from musk from grapes!…delicious and very unusual. We loved it.
The to the market where we could not think of the word for fennel…but did finally think of shallots….a crazy 76 year old women connected with us. She was obsessed with the distinction between “love” and “sex” insisting that my husband must have had sex with someone else during our marriage…despite his protestations. She also was sure she could find sex at her age but never love. Eleni was horrified for her clients (us) because of this “wild woman.” But no need. We have crazy people at home too. So we moved on to more of the market and loved seeing and smelling it.
Then on to an amazing store run by two “former lawyers” who met in law school…and enjoyed the food and wine back then. A few years ago, they both decided they “didn’t want to die as lawyers.” They wanted to have fun. So they took all that they had learned and relished about Greek food/wine/etc. and turned it into a business. One of the highlights of this tour was the “neighborhood”…a real sense of the people ad they way they live…if you wanted more it would be easy to come back to a B&B…Athens is the 6th in the world for B&B visits…took wine and Rosehip jam home!
Then there was the last bakery…owned by sons now of the man who started it…10 stores…we met the manager of the one in our neighborhood. We had a “hands-on” experience working to make pastries with phyllo dough…buttering…folding…dipping in syrup flavored slightly with lemon…baked and then stuffed (yes we did it)with whipped something like mascarpone and then dipped in cartelized almonds. The manager would like my bread recipe for oatmeal blackstrap molasses bread!
The variety of experiences was amazing. Eleni was terrific, energetic, and enthusiastic, kind and clever. Each venue went to was “ready” for us with delectable treats and gracious shop owners and fantastic tastes of a wide variety of food and drink. Thank you Eleni!

Dear suzyvance, First of all thank you for this detailed, spontaneous and marvelous review. We enjoyed reading your whole experience which you described as a real time story! It is amazing to hear from our guests how they saw every store, how they liked the taste of every bite, how they connected with the host so that we can process that input and provide our guests with the best possible experience. That is exactly what you did and we are beyond grateful for that. Eleni was delighted to meet you and spend time ‘with people with a wide range of interests and a big heart’ (that’s how she described you)! She told us that your enjoyment of the bites and drinks and warm smile were to her some of the highlights that will stick in her memory. It is great that you renewed you knowledge regarding Greek history at the first stop and that you liked the spoon sweets or as we say here in Greece ‘gluko tou koutaliou’. These are served in a spoon as a gesture of hospitality and can be made from almost any fruit. Make sure you try a spoon sweet made from vegetable or flower the next time. They are delicious too! We are happy you enjoyed the real Greek neighborhood, this tour definitely points out the authentic Athens lifestyle. We also hope that the sparkling grapefruit makes it to your neighborhood too at some point! Like you have noticed very well, we carefully picked the stops as most of them have this family feeling around them and the products that they offer are mouth-watering (as you have already experienced)! We were also excited that the specific owners moved from being lawyers to starting this business. Sometimes you need to follow what you love in life, right? We are happy to hear that you liked the market experience despite the encounter with the lady. Like you mentioned, strange people are seen in the streets of all big cities, and it is great you didn’t let that affect your whole experience of the market with all its colors, smells and delicious produce. It is amazing you enjoyed so much your pastry making moments. Your words describing this behind-the-scenes experience make anyone reading them want to eat something sweet now! And about the oatmeal blackstrap molasses bread recipe perhaps you can share it with us too? We love hearing about different recipes and cultures. We are so proud to have Eleni in our team for all the reasons that you have mentioned above and we are delighted that you liked the variety of experiences you had together during your tour. Let us know should you come back to Greece for some more advice, we would love to help you!
