Corinth, Cave of Lakes, and Odontotos Railway Private Tour
US$240,86
Overview
Discover the ancient legends and Mediterranean beauty of Corinth on a private, full-day tour from Athens or Nafplio. Cross the Corinth Canal to enter the Peloponnese, and drive through an area rich with vineyards and olive groves to reach the mythical underground Cave of Lakes. Ride the historic Odontotos Rack Railway, visit your choice of either Ancient Corinth or the Mega Spilaio Monastery, and enjoy a traditional Greek ‘meze’ lunch in a mountain village, all with the care of a dedicated guide and in the comfort of a private vehicle.
What to Expect
Have a a real Greek experience with a private driver/guide by private vehicle. Drive west of Athens city (or north of Nafplio town/port); you will enter the central part of the Mythical Peloponnese region from the Corinth canal and explore your way to the destinations in an elliptical manner, starting from sea level, up to the beautiful mountains and back to the coastline. See coastal views, wine yards, olive groves, mountain villages, underground lakes (at the Cave of Lakes), the Odontotos Rack Railway; as well as gorge and river views. You'll also travel to the Mega Spilaio Monastery and then back to sea level. You will either opt for the Ancient Corinth site or Mega Spilaio Monastery.

Heading out of Athens, first make a quick stop at the Corinth canal. Next is the archeological site of Ancient Corinth. Then, on to the Cave of Lakes. The Cave of Lakes combines, in an admirable way, ageless natural beauty with the remains of habitation and myth. The myth says that Lysippe, Ifinoe and Ifianassa, the daughters of the king of Tiryns Proetos, found refuge in the cave when they were obsessed by madness. The Cave of the Lakes is a rare creation of nature, with mysterious galleries and stalactite formations.

In the site there are archaeological findings like fossilized human and animal bones, including a hippopotamus.  After a short drive arrive at the town of Kalavrita, where you can let your driver/guide treat you to an authentic lunch and drinks; a highlight of this tour for "foodies" both meat lovers and vegetarians!

Next, head to the Mega Spilaio Monastery, if you've already visited Ancient Corinth as part of another tour. Finally, head to Odontotos Rack Railway. 120 years ago Odontotos Rack Railway started from the seaside town of Diakopto, parallel to the river and climbed to Kalavrita through bridges and tunnels. The little train incorporated so well to the natural environment that it seems that it had always been there. The way it was constructed did not put a strain on the ecosystem of the gorge. Using stone and wood from the area, the technicians' work is so perfect that someone may think that the nature worked on its own. Odontotos is not just a train. Vouraikos Gorge and Odontotos Rack Railway from Diakopto to Kalavrita is a unique attraction in Greece.

You will then board the little train in Zachlorou village, and enjoy a great 40 minute experience going down the mountain, following an amazing route to the coastline. Your driver will be waiting for you at the other end to head back to Athens.
Diakopes (holidays) in Greek means “to stop,” to leave the anxiety lifestyle behind, breathe the scent of Greek life and meet the locals.
