Easy travel with frequent trains--can do on your own easily
Nov 2018 • Couples
If you do not have the time to do the river cruise--which is too bad that you have to miss it--this is a great alternative. We "jumped ship" in Regua to be able to catch, in Lisbon, our cruise back to the states. We were sorry to have to give up the last day, but we knew that when we booked. The train station is Regua is very easy to find and is reasonably decent--food is available and you can secure tickets there (or in advance at an train station in Portugal).

The ride is beautiful until you begin to approach Porto, then it is very "standard" for entering any large city anywhere in the world--lots of industry, farms, residential.... This is the "price you pay" for not being on the ship. The cruise out of Porto is really beautiful, but not as good as you9 travel further up the river. On the train, you will see pretty much what you see from the ship, but the views are not as big. This is a good alternative that can be done in far less time than being on the ship, but we are considering it on our return trip to Portugal because of the time savings. We want to visit some of the small towns along the river as opposed to repeating the cruise--which spend only a small amount of time in the docks.

As for the train cars, they are a little spartan when compared to the cars on the major intercity lines. There are very few amenities on these cars (remember, we were taking a train at 6:20 AM and the later trains may have more amenities), but you are there for the views--or, in our case, a fast way to get to Porto! Make certain you get your seat (which I do not think you can reserve in advance) on the river side of the car. The opposite views are not very exciting compared to the river views, but that can be a matter of personal preference as to what interests you most. These trains run with a great deal of precision--not like the Swiss trains, but who is? We left on time, but we were late in getting into the Porto station. We knew we were cutting it close, but the conductor was absolutely wonderful and got the dispatcher to "hold" the train for us to catch it to Lisbon.

As I mentioned above, this is a great way to see the Duero River in a very short period of time and allow you to access the small towns on your own schedule based on your personal research. Make certain you nail down your hotels in advance--they appear to be very small and may not be able to accommodate "drop ins." There are many great places to eat in these towns. There is a lot to see in them and around them. You will be amazed at the quality and range of the Duero River Valley wines--as well as the ports. Many of the wines we had do not get out of Portugal! An important point to remember is that the train does not go very far up the river, so check the schedules and train lines in advance to make certain there is access to the cities you want. You will have to reserve a car or a taxi to do any serious exploring outside the cities.

Had a wonderful trip -- See my review of the Cruzeiros Duoro for details of this trip.
Oct 2018
Leisurely day trip out of the city. Our tour met at Sao Bento train station so able to see decorative tile interior without making special trip. Comfortable - uncrowded rural train trip up the valley to Regua .. short walk to the boat and slow smooth cruise back to Porto. Meal service with wine and family style seating was comfortable and enjoyable with lots of passenger interaction ...and language experiences. We got exactly what we wanted to from this tour .. if you're out to see the upper reaches of the Duoro and the old steeply terraced vineyards this isn't the tour for you. Also .. there is no Port tasting or winery visits on this trip. So know what you want and choose carefully - Cruzeiros Douro certainly has one that'll make your day.

Crowded, and rude
Aug 2018 • Couples
It started with 20 minutes delay. Followed the breakfast. standard croissant and bread with coffee and juice,
Packed full - circa 200+ passengers. Was too cold inside due to the AC being on in just one side of the ship.
A portuguese lady tourist customer asked politely to one of the crew members to turn it a bit down due to babies and elderly people ... REPLY: And how do you expect us to do the work around here? Well... i was speechless
After breakfast we went up to the deck where we sat on the chairs there, just to realize that the chairs were not enough to all passengers and they were standing up... blocking the entire sight of the view. I felt like a bull in a slaughterhouse. There is a Working BAR with some friendly staff - coffees spirits and juices can be purchased there.
Lack of control from the Ship personnel, as some tourists were abusing other passengers goodwill, by blocking sight, using other people chairs etc..
As soon as we docked in Regua, the exit path was invaded for like 20 people selling hats. Terrible.
The trip on the train was also messed up as they decided to deliver the tickets for the train return to Porto in the train stop .. Crowded with other ships passengers, and standard train passengers... Not nice at all, imagine 500 people piling up in a small door exit- lack of coordination, experience. where what really matters here is to get as many people in a ship and profit.
I can only recommend staying away from Rudeness and slaughterhouses.

Worthwhile - even if a bit lomg
If you want a short excursion, don’t do this.

From the start it is stated that you start at 07:30 and finish at 17:30. If you can’t handle this long, take a walk in Porto.

Train ride, 2 hrs, very relaxing, nice seats. YOU NEED TO GET THERE.

The boat is nice, well maintained and clean. We got lucky, not too crowded, this is why we did it on a Monday. Yes it is HOT on the deck, heck you are in Portugal, not an Alaska Cruise. Food was good, not great but as expected for 65 euros.

Yes long ride, but expected, need to come back.

SCENERY, very very nice.

Relaxed all day, that was the purpose and good value for the $.

Not recommendable
Jul 2018 • Family
Today we joined a trip first with train to Regua and then by boat back to Porto.
We wanted to experience the Douro valley.
This was mostly a trip for elderly Portugiese people who wanted to eat, drink and dance.
The guide was non existent.
We regret that we didn’t take the car instead or joined another company.

Time line of events:
Day before the tour we were called by Viatour to tell us the pick up would be 07.15 from our hotel, no problem.
Driver collected us and dropped us at the station at 07.30 for a meeting with the tour guide at 08.25. We all went for a coffee e and at 07.55 I was called by Viatour to tell us to be at the meeting point at 08.00, we abandoned our coffee and went to meet the guide.
She took our details, gave us our tickets and said that we should go for a coffee as the train din't leave until 08.30!!
We boarded the train and found that the left side windows were covered in "street art" and it was impossible to see anything from one side of the train.
We arrived in Regua 15 mins late, which was not a problem, the scenery we could see en route was spectacular. We boarded the boat at 11.30 and set off for Porto. Lunch was served and as in previous reviews it was exactly the same, but it was tasty.
After lunch we were left to our own devices, which actuall meant staying inside the dining area because:
1.There were no spare seats on deck.
2. The seats that occasionally became available were in hot sunshine...there were no shaded areas on board.
At 17.15 I received a call from Viatours telling me that our driver would be a few minutes late because of traffic. I informed her that we would NOT be arriving in Porto until 18.30. This apparently was the normal time for the cruise - 7 hours. It is far too long and unfortunately the tour company and Viatours do not keep in touch with each other with regard to timings.
My advice to other people thinking of booking this trip is THINK TWICE.

WAY TOO LONG
employees on the boat are wonderful, food was decent but train trip is 2 hours, of not very picturesque scenery, you get off train and walk directly to boat, and spend over SIX hours cruising back to Porto. You are served a nice hot lunch, pork, cabbage, potatoes, rice, olives, sort of cheesecake, wine, water, coffee. Food is decent, but then the chairs are not so comfortable, and the narrative can only be heard inside. Presented somewhat monotone, though informative. The bartender was amusing, and our waiter very good.
The locks were interesting, I've been through locks all over the world, and these had a gate that opened almost like a garage door! The scenery is nice, don't get me wrong, but not much variety, no place to really be comfortable, so made for a very long day.

The river is nice, the landscape is interesting and the food is quite good but the tour lasts all day and if I were to do it over I look for a shorter tour as there are more and better things to do in Porto

Loved it!
On a steamy fall weekend, we flew to Porto and then readied ourselves for the day trip the next day. Met the guide early in the morning, took the train along the river and enjoyed the views of the mountains and river. Once at the destination we were lead to the boat and to our table. It was set beautifully with a lovely view of the water and deck. The food was delicious, the boat was full but not over crowded. It was a hot day in October, the sun on the deck was amazing. Definitely recommend this trip.
